Piero della Francesca
Piero della Francesca (1420?-92). One of the great artists of the early Italian Renaissance , Piero della Francesca painted religious works that are marked by their simple serenity and clarity. He was also interested in geometry and mathematics and was known for his contributions in these fields. Although the date and place of Piero della Francesca's birth are not definite, it seems likely that he was born in about 1420 in Sansepolcro, Italy. His father was a well-to-do tanner and shoemaker, and Piero's varied accomplishments indicate that he received a good education. He probably studied painting with one of several skilled artists of the Sienese school who lived in Sansepolcro. By 1439 Piero was working with Domenico Veneziano on frescoes for the hospital of Santa Maria Nuova in Florence. His experience and contacts in Florence, where he would have seen the works of such sculptors, artists, and architects as Donatello, Brunelleschi, Masaccio, and Fra Angelico , had a profound influence on Piero's style. Piero was skilled in perspective, and his paintings are also known for the care with which he rendered the landscapes that provide the backgrounds for his figures. Throughout his life he maintained his ties with Sansepolcro, but he traveled widely.

(c. 1416-1492) See also: Renaissance Art VIEW IMAGE LIST Piero della Francesca seems to have been another incorruptible, though little is known about him: his birth date could have been any time between 1400 and 1420, though we know he died in 1492. His father was a tanner and his own first job was to paint the striped poles used to carry candles in religious processions. Yet such was the upwards mobility of the times, intellectual as well as social, that he made himself a master mathematician and played a bigger role in the spread of Euclid's geometry than anyone else. He wrote a number of learned treatises, three of which survive, including an exposition of the rules of perspective, De prospectiva pingendi , which demanded more mathematical skills than most painters have ever possessed. Perspective and geometry figure both prominently and subtly in all Piero's works. He liked to organise large, plain masses of colour in patterns which suggest an underlying geometrical scheme. That gives his paintings the unfinished look which moderns like. He made a positive virtue of the light palette which the use of old painting methods forced on artists. There are always large areas of white or near-white in his works, the skies are big, light and sunny, and this pleasing radiance, combined with the absence of meticulous clutter, makes his paintings enormously attractive to our eyes. All this was carefully considered and deliberate. If we compare the two sections of altarpieces in the National Gallery, London

Formal and austere, all his works, of whatever size or medium, show in their use of colour, perspective, and composition a fascination with mathematical order. His largest-scale work is the fresco series The Legend of the True Cross The Resurrection of Christ (Pinacoteca, Borgo San Sepulcro) and the panel altarpiece Madonna with the Duke of Urbino as Donor (Brera, Milan). Piero della Francesca
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Baptism of Christ Piero della Francesca (c. October 12 ) was an Italian artist whose work was characterized by his interest in mathematics, particularly how it related to perspective and foreshortening. He wrote a treatise De prospectiva pingendi on how the rules of mathematical foreshortening could be applied to any object, be it a cube or human head. Less obvious in his work is his significant contribution to the ' humanistic ' rendition of figures in painting specifically his renditions of Christ. Most of his life was spent in Arezzo and his hometown, Borgo San Sepolcro in Tuscany. He studied under Domenico Veneziano in Florence Among his disciples: Melozzo da Forl¬ His work includes the Madonna della Misericordia (c. The History of the True Cross -66) painted in the church of San Francesco, Arezzo, The Flagellation (c.

PIERO DELLA FRANCESCA (Sansepolcro, 1416/17 approx.- 1492)
Piero della Francesca is certainly one of the most important Italian painters of the XV century. His art was ample, monumental and rational, and represents one of the highest artistic ideals of the early Renaissance. The absolute mathematical rigour of his creations emphasises the abstract and iconic traits of his paintings and adds a powerful religious feeling to his masterpieces.
Piero was born around 1416 in Borgo San Sepolcro : his father, Benedetto , was a leather and wool dealer, while his mother, Romana di Perino , came from Monterchi , a village nearby.
Piero della Francesca 's first works show a thorough knowledge of the art of his age and suggest that he might have spent some time in Florence ; his presence in the Tuscan county town is mentioned in a document dated 1439, when he worked with Domenico Veneziano at the series of frescoes for the chiesa di Sant'Egidio (the church of Saint Egidio), now lost. After his Florentine experience, around 1440-1445 he painted the

He delighted in the play of mathematical ratios and painted The Flagellation of Christ (c.1450; Urbino) in a measured, symmetrical manner. His most famous cycle, The Story of the True Cross Golden Legend. Particularly notable are the imposing portrayal of the Queen of Sheba, the stately array of battle scenes, and the stark night scene of the Dream of Constantine. He painted several court portraits, including one of Sigismondo Malatesta before his Patron Saint, a simple geometric conception. This contrasts with the scrupulous detail he used in painting the profile portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino (Uffizi). Piero also executed the massive Resurrection (Borgo San Sepolcro) and several altarpieces, parts of which have been lost or scattered. One panel of a saint is in the Frick Collection, New York. He always painted slowly and deliberately, and after 1475 his activity slackened.
