The very first set theories had problems. The first one with specific axioms (base propositions from which other propositions could be established) was designed by someone named Frege and looked like this:
  • Extensionality:
    Two sets are the same if and only if they have identical elements.
  • Abstraction:
    For any property, there is a set of all things having that property.(The property must be expressed as a finite formula)
  • Choice:
    If you have a set which is partitioned into a number of subsets, with each subset containing at least one element and no two subsets sharing any elements, then there is yet another subset with exactly one element from each piece (This is explained in more detail below).
Unfortunatly, this system was shown to be inconsistant because of Russell's paradox. One can use the Axiom of Abstraction to generate the set of all sets that do not contain themselves. But does this set contain itself or not? If it does, it does not, if it does not, then it does. Ooops. Bertrand Russell, who pointed out this flaw, advocated correcting this by his Type Theory. It's sets were classified into multiple levels. Level had only basic elements that are not sets (called urelements). The next level had sets of urelements. Level 2 sets could contain urelements or Level 1 sets. And so on. In this set theory, no loops can occur, there is no set of all sets that do not contain themselves, and the paradox is averted.

Zermelo set theory , as set out in an important paper in 1908 by (Click link for more info and facts about Ernst Zermelo) Ernst Zermelo , is the ancestor of modern (The branch of pure mathematics that deals with the nature and relations of sets) set theory . It bears certain differences to its descendants, which are not always understood, and are frequently misquoted. (Redirected from Adolf Fraenkel Adolf Abraham Halevi Fraenkel February 17 October 15 ), known as Abraham Fraenkel , was a German Israeli mathematician Adolf Fraenkel Born in Munich Germany on February 17 , Fraenkel studied mathematics at the University of Munich University of Berlin University of Marburg and University of Breslau ; after graduating, he lectured at the University of Marburg from on, and was promoted to professor in Fraenkel left Marburg six years later, in ; after a year of teaching at the University of Kiel , he moved to Jerusalem in , four years after the Hebrew University of Jerusalem 's founding, where he spent the rest of his career. He became the first dean of the faculty of mathematics and also served as the rector of the university for a while. Denne samling af Jakob Nielsens papirer består for størstedelen af særtryk, som Nielsen har modtaget fra andre videnskabsfolk og sorteret efter forfatter. Udover særtrykkene er der i forbindelse med nogle af personerne breve, manuskripter, ansøgninger og andet. Alt materiale er fra ca. 1890-1959 og på en lang række sprog hvad angår særtrykkene. Det øvrige materiale er dog fortrinsvis på dansk eller tysk.
Omfang:
Samlingen omfatter 79 arkivkasser, hvoraf de første 25 er almindelige arkivkasser og resten er Nielsens originale kasser.
Overdragelse:
Samlingen befandt sig i Matematisk biblioteks kælder i E-bygningen på H. C. Ørsted Institutet i efteråret 1996. Det vides ikke, hvornår eller hvordan den er kommet der. I juli 1999 blev der tilføjet fotokopier af materiale fra Staatsarchiv Hamburg til box 10

"Nicht ohne Bedenken stand ich anfangs der Anregung des Herrn Verlegers gegenüber, die in Kiel gehaltenen Vorlesungen zu veröffentlichen; konnten doch diese, der Art der Hörer und der Kürze der Zeit entsprechend, nur in beschränktem Maße völlig Neues bieten. Ich verschloß mich indes nicht der Überzeugung, daß auch die Sammlung und vor allem die von didaktischen Zielen geleitete Darstellung vorhandenen Materials ihren Wert besitzen kann, wenn dieses vielfältig in Zeitschriften zerstreut vorliegt; das trifft umsomehr zu, als ja die mathematische Produktion (die eigenen Arbeiten des Verfassers nicht ausgenommen) sich vorwiegend in einem Gewand darbietet, das selbst den Fachgenossen, soweit sie nicht gerade auf dem nämlichen Sondergebiet arbeiten, das Eindringen sehr erschwert."

Scripta Universitatis
The first mathematical research journal with articles in Hebrew appeared in 1923, two years before the inauguration of the Hebrew University. The official full name of the journal was Scripta Universitatis atque Bibliothecae Hierosolymitanarum . This journal published only two volumes. One was titled Orientalia and Judaica and the other Mathematica and Physica . This latter volume was edited by Albert Einstein and contained 12 articles in German, Italian, French and English, all translated into Hebrew. The journal was funded by Simon Velikovsky, and published by his son Immanuel Velikovsky with the help of Heinrich Loewe. 1990 übergaben Roland Paul und Bernhard Gerlach dem Oberbürgermeister von Kaiserslautern eine Liste von 144 ehemaligen Bürgerinnen und Bürgern aus der Stadt Kaiserslautern, die aufgrund ihrer jüdischen Herkunft oder ihres jüdischen Glaubens während der Zeit des Faschismus ermordet oder auf andere Art und Weise umgekommen sind. Die nachfolgende Liste umfaßt 173 Namen von jüdischen Opfern aus Kaiserslautern.
"Ich möchte, daß man weiß, daß es keine namenlosen Helden gegeben hat. Daß es Menschen waren, die ihren Namen, ihr Gesicht, ihre Sehnsucht und ihre Hoffnungen hatten, und daß deshalb der Schmerz auch des Letzten unter ihnen nicht kleiner war als der Schmerz des Ersten, dessen Name erhalten bleibt.
