Welcome page The World Great Mathematician Fourier studied the mathematical theory of heat conduction. He established the partial differential equation governing heat diffusion and solved it by using infinite series of trigonometric functions. Fourier trained for the priesthood but did not take his vows. Instead took up mathematics studying (1794) and later teaching mathematics at the new Eacute;cole Normale. In 1798 he joined Napoleon's army in its invasion of Egypt as scientific advisor. He helped establish educational facilities in Egypt and carried out archaeological explorations. He returned to France in 1801 and was appointed prefect of the department of Isere by Napoleon. He published "Theacuteorie analytique de la chaleur" in 1822 devoted to the mathematical theory of heat conduction. He established the partial differential equation governing heat diffusion and solved it by using infinite series of trigonometric functions. In this he introduced the representation of a function as a series of sines or cosines now known as Fourier series. Fourier's work provided the impetus for later work on trigonometric series and the theory of functions of a real variable.

JEAN BAPTISTE JOSEPH FOURIER (1768-1830) En 1882 el gran matemático, egiptólogo y administrador francés Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier publicó un trabajo original de gran influencia sobre la teoría matemática de la conductancia del calor. Fue una obre maestra no sólo por el nuevo campo de la conducción de calor que exploraba, sino también por la serie infinita de senoidales que desarrolló, y que se hizo famosa como la serie de Fourier. Con la serie de Fourier ya no estamos restringidos en la aplicación de los métodos fasoriales, a los circuitos cuyas entradas sean senoidales. Fourier nació en Auxerre, Francia, hijo de un sastre. Asistió a la escuela militar local dirigida por monjes benedictinos y mostró tal habilidad para las matemáticas que finalmente fue profesor de matemáticas en su escuela. Como muchos franceses de su época, fue arrastrada a la política de la Revolución Francesa con todas sus consecuencias y más de una vez estuvo cerca de perder la vida. Fue uno de los primeros maestros de la Escuela Politécnica y llegó a ser profesor de análisis matemático. A la edad de 30 años Fourier fue designado por Napoleón consejero científico en una expedición a Egipto y durante 4 años fue secretario del Instituto de Egipto, donde se estableció la egiptología como una ciencia separada. Fue prefecto del departamento de Isere de 1801 a 1814, donde escribió su famoso tratado sobre conducción de calor. Terminó un libro sobre ecuaciones algebraicas justo antes de su muerte en 1830.
