John Flamsteed (August 19, 1646 - December 31, 1719)
John Flamsteed was the son of a prosperous merchant in Denby near Derby, Derbyshire, England. He studied astronomy between 1662 and 1669 on his own and opposed by his father. He was employed by King Charles II. as Britain's first Royal Astronomer on March 4, 1675, on the recommendation of Jonas Moore. The Royal Observatory at Greenwich was built for him and he began observing in 1676, but he had to fund and bring his own instruments. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1677, where he was a Member of council from 1681-4 and 1698- 1700. In 1684, he was granted living in Burstow in Surrey by Lord North. His main work was collecting improved observations and position measurements for stars, which finally led to the compilation of a large catalog, Historia Coelestis Britannica , and an atlas of stars, Atlas Coelestis . Included in his careful observations were some interesting discoveries and unrercognized pre-discovery observations:
  • On August 16, 1680, Flamsteed possiby observed, but didn't recognize the significance of the

he Reverend John Flamsteed (1646-1719)
Born in Derbyshire in 1646, John Flamsteed showed an early talent for practical astronomy, and his work in this field became known among scholars. One of his papers, sent to the President of the Royal Academy, brought him to the attention of Sir Isaac Newton, then Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University. As a result, Flamsteed went to Jesus College, Cambridge, where he took a degree in 1674. Another patron was Sir Jonas Moore who procured for him the newly-created office of Astronomer Royal. The building of the Observatory was brought about by the need for a satisfactory method of finding the longitude of ships at sea. A project had been promulgated in London by a Frenchman, Le Sieur de St Pierre, but Flamsteed pointed out that it could not be carried out because, "The places of the fixed stars" were not accurately enough known. The King, Charles II, is said to have reacted with some vehemence, ordering that they should be "anew observed, examined and corrected for the use of his seamen". So the Observatory was built at Greenwich. The King gave a grant of £500, bricks from Tilbury Fort and wood, iron and lead from a demolished gatehouse at the Tower, and promised "whatever else became necessary". In 1675 the first stone was laid of the building designed by Sir Christopher Wren, as he put it, "for the Observator's habitation and a little for Pompe". In it, the art of practical astronomy was to be created. Flamsteed made great efforts to get an adequate provision of astronomical instruments and to make arrangements for carrying out his observations but, despite the King's promise, little further was forthcoming, and he had to pay out of his own pocket the assistants to help him carry out his Herculean tasks. The first was to construct a more extensive and accurate catalogue of the fixed stars than any then existing; the second was the systematic observation of the sun, moon and planets with a view to revising the theories of their apparent movements and to constructing tables from which their positions could be computed with greater accuracy. The work, which he did not live to complete, was finished by his two devoted assistants.

Flamsteed's lifelong task was to replace existing observational data of the heavens with more exact tables. Lunar theory was always a special interest. His Historia coelestis britannica, 1725, contained his catalogue of 3000 stars.
Flamsteed's method of determining right ascensions has been called the basis of modern astronomy.

Ordained a clergyman in 1675, Flamsteed in 1684 received the income of the living of Burstow, Surrey. His report to the Royal Society on the need for a new observatory resulted in the founding (1675) of the Royal Greenwich Observatory, of which he was the first director (and hence astronomer royal). He found that he himself had to supply all the instruments at Greenwich, apart from a few gifts; he was forced to take private pupils to augment his income. A small inheritance from his father, who died in 1688, provided the means to construct a mural arc, a wall-mounted instrument for measuring the altitudes of stars as they passed the meridian. The latter part of Flamsteed's life passed in controversy over the publication of his excellent stellar observations. He struggled to withhold them until completed, but they were urgently needed by Isaac Newton and Edmond Halley, among others. Newton, through the Royal Society, led the movement for their immediate publication. In 1704 Prince George of Denmark undertook the cost of publication, and, despite the prince's death in 1708 and Flamsteed's objections, the incomplete observations were edited by Halley, and 400 copies were printed in 1712. Flamsteed later managed to burn 300 of them. His own star catalog, Historia Coelestis Britannica (1725), listed more stars (3,000) and gave their positions much more accurately than did any other previous work. Some stars, such as 61 Cygni, are still known by their numbers in his system.

Biographical Information Occupation, Sphere of Activity John Flamsteed ( ) was the first astronomer royal of England. His legacy to the science of astronomy was mostly in more accurate mapping of the skies, rather than radical new theories. He had limited formal education, having left Derby Free School due to ill health, but he did benefit from tutoring, and his illness led to his first experience of astronomy: unable to attend school, he observed the partial solar eclipse of 12 September 1662 Flamsteed's favour with the King improved dramatically in the winter of , when a French courtier of Charles II suggested a method of calculating longitude, accurate knowledge of which is crucial for safe navigation. Flamsteed demonstrated that the theory was impractical due to the inexactitude of existing stellar measurements, which had not been refined since the time of Tycho de Brahe ( ), before the time of telescope when telescopes were not used. For a seafaring nation like England, safe navigation was crucial, and Flamsteed's proof of the stellar tables' inaccuracy was noted. Plans to establish a royal observatory, which had been semi-dormant for some time, were rapidly revived, and Flamsteed was appointed as the first astronomer royal (specifically ordered to make observations relevant to navigation), and the Greenwich Observatory was constructed. Though he was underpaid, his observatory underfunded, and the initial government enthusiasm for astronomical matters was short-lived, Flamsteed set to work making his observations. He used a new method of defining stars' positions, which radically improved accuracy. The uncertainties and errors in these measurements were smaller than those in Tycho de Brahe's (admirable) results by a factor of fifteen. His discoveries elicited the curiosity of fellow astronomer Edmund Halley (

En su Atlas coelestis, ideó un sistema de proyección en que el meridiano correspondiente a la mitad del mapa y todos los paralelos son líneas rectas, mientras que los meridianos son curvos. He invented a conic projection that allowed him to obtain flat charts from his celestial observations. He published his 3000 stars catalogue partly in 1712 ("Historia Coelestis Britannica") and completely in 1725. This last edition contained some nebulous objects (3 personnal discoveries). He never got along with his successor and a friend of the latter: HALLEY and NEWTON.
