Flamsteed was ordained in 1671 but became interested in Astronomy when he was forced to postpone university due to ill health. He went on to get a degree at Jesus College Cambridge. Before his appointment at Greenwich his work in astronomy had included the observation of a solar eclipse in 1662 and determining solar parallax from observations of Mars.
The Governmental Office of Ordinance provided money for the building and for salaries. The equipment came from donation and bought by Flamsteed himself. Flamsteed laboriously compiled detailed observations of star positions. His most famous achievement at the Observatory was to produce a 3000 star British Catalogue. In addition to this work he made observations of the made tables of the Sun's motion, measured the latitude of Greenwich, calculated the inclination of the ecliptic and the position of the equinoxes, created tables of atmospheric refraction, and tidal patterns, and devised a method of observing absolute Right Ascension.
Later in life Flamsteed argued with both Newton and Halley . Relations became worse in 1712 when Halley published a private edition of Flamsteed's observations without his permission. Of the 400 copies of Historia Coelestis, published Flamsteed recovered 300 and burn them after removing the 97 pages he considered to have been untampered with. His observations were finally published as Flamsteed had intended in 1725 after his death.

John Flamsteed became the first Astronomer Royal on the founding of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich in 1675. Coincidentally, like Johannes Hevelius he was the son of a prosperous brewer. As his career progressed, he increasingly identified himself with Tycho Brahe, whom he called 'the noble Tycho' or 'the noble Dane'. Like his mentor, Flamsteed was devoted to astronomical measurement, was responsible for equipping and developing an observatory, received patronage from the king while also meeting many of his own costs, and was, he believed, beset by enemies and detractors. Officially called 'Astronomical Observator', Flamsteed preferred to style himself 'Mathematicus Regius' - Tycho had been 'Imperial Mathematician' in Prague. The engravings of the Royal Observatory and its instruments, commissioned by Flamsteed's patron Jonas Moore from Francis Place, were probably part of a scheme to publish an account of the observatory after the manner of Tycho's Mechanica As the first incumbent, Flamsteed had to fashion the image of the occupant of the Royal Observatory and Tycho, 'the greatest prince among astronomers', was a valuable resource. In seeking to assert an independent authority over his observations, Flamsteed could deploy the association between astronomy and nobility represented by Tycho. In an age more attracted to the construction of theories in astronomy, of which Newton's Principia was the outstanding example, Flamsteed attributed a higher morality to laying down a secure store of measurements than to following the uncertain and transient goal of theory. It was a judgement he believed he shared with his noble predecessor.

John Flamsteed
John Flamsteed (1646-1719) was appointed as Charles II's `astronomical observator' on 4 March 1675. In effect he was the first Astronomer Royal, though that title was not yet formally attached to his post. His task was to run the new Royal Observatory shortly to be built at Greenwich, and he remained in charge there until his death on the last day of 1719. His three-volume Historia Coelestis Britannica (1725), containing his observations and a new star-catalogue of unprecedented accuracy, and Atlas Coelestis (1729), containing celestial charts, were posthumous publications completed by his widow and assistants. Flamsteed received his initial education at Derby grammar school but, by his own account, was not allowed to go on to university because of his ill health and his father's need for help in dealing with business concerns. While he remained at home his father taught him arithmetic, and he was encouraged to further studies by friends interested in practical mathematics, astronomy and astrology. In November 1669 he addressed a long letter containing astronomical predictions to the Royal Society, which secured his introduction to London scientific circles; in the following year he paid a visit to London, passing through Cambridge along the way and obtaining nominal admission to Jesus College. This seems to have been arranged for him by a then Fellow of the College, Richard Wroe. Four years later, Flamsteed returned briefly to Cambridge and proceeded M.A. by royal mandate (which meant that he could do so without having kept the usual number of terms).

Executive summary: Founder of Greenwich Observatory English astronomer, born at Denby, near Derby, on the 19th of August 1646. The only son of Stephen Flamsteed, a maltster, he was educated at the free school of Derby, but left it finally in May 1662, in consequence of a rheumatic affection of the joints, due to a chill caught while bathing. Medical aid having proved of no avail, he went to Ireland in 1665 to be "stroked" by Valentine Greatrakes, but "found not his disease to stir." Meanwhile, he solaced his enforced leisure with astronomical studies. Beginning with J. Sacrobosco's De sphaera , he read all the books on the subject that he could buy or borrow; observed a partial solar eclipse on the 12th of September 1662; and attempted the construction of measuring instruments. A tract on the equation of time, written by him in 1667, was published by Dr. John Wallis with the Posthumous Works of J. Horrocks (1673); and a paper embodying his calculations of appulses to stars by the moon, which appeared in the
