Somebody up There Likes Me Too a book by George Fitzgerald reviewed by Shaun Aisbitt Any friends or regular visitors to this site will know I read and study a lot, mostly for the purpose of reaching out to the lost. In all my years of reading and research, no book so far could have held my attention for so long that I couldn't put it down, no book could have stirred up so many emotions and brought back a flood of memories. That was until this book came along "Someone up there likes me too" by George Fitzgerald. George tells his story like a true Dub (Dubliner) speaks. This fast paced book brings us from Dublin's infamous northside Ballymun flats to Finglas, from fighting on the streets to winning championship boxing titles, from every young child's dream of fame to a chart topping band, from loss and sorrow to joy unspeakable. George's story isn't a sanitized 'Roddy Doyle Northsider' story, sanitized and fit for stage and screen, far far from it. George's story tells what it was like as a child growing up in north Dublin, the drugs, the gangs, the 'hardmen', "St. Pat's", the tragic young deaths of over 160 friends and acquaintances and so on. And yet like a beam of light piercing through all the darkness, there are happy times, there is the sense of community despite the chaos, there are the jewels in the rough and the wisdom he finds in people from the most unlikely of places. Whether it's advice from an old ex-boxer or a cobbler, their wisdom sparkles, encourages and moulds both a young George and also the reader.

Special to the WCR
Cacouna, Que.
Just off rue de l'Eglise in the riverside town, St-Georges-de-Cacouna is an attractive, historical House of God, centrepiece of the community, greatly respected by all Cacounois. This, the oldest church in the Rimouski Diocese, was designated an historic monument in 1957 and is admired annually by thousands of visitors. St. George is of course, one of the most readily recognized saints in both the Eastern and Western churches. He has enjoyed enormous popularity since the seventh century, with his red cross banner, lance and cowering, defeated dragon, the epitome of the knight in shining armour. Sometimes he's portrayed with a rescued damsel or riding a white horse. George is the model for chivalry and concern for the poor and downtrodden, the victor over evil forces. This patron of England, Germany, Portugal, archers, soldiers and the Republic of Georgia has his name attached to more than five towns in Quebec alone.

    Interview - Ross Fitzgerald
    Broadcast 6.30pm on 17/02/2003
Our interview guest this week is Professor of History and Politics at Griffith University, Ross Fitzgerald. A well-known commentator on political and social issues, Ross chats with George about our history of ‘firsts’, our obsession with them as a nation, and that perverse Aussie tendency to want to chop those ‘Tall Poppies’ down. GEORGE NEGUS: To talk about that and the whole Australian icon thing and social firsts, commentator, novelist, historian and friend from way back, Ross Fitzgerald.
    Ross, good to see you.
ROSS FITZGERALD: Good to see you, George.
GEORGE NEGUS: Did you react to that as I did - that Frank Fenner is clearly a man of international status like you wouldn't believe, but few Australians know about him?
ROSS FITZGERALD: Very few people know the path-breaking work that he did. And I suppose that's so typical of our country. I mean, we know some things like we were the first to institute the eight-hour working day, although now most people that are working are working 12 hours. But we don't know, for example that Australia had the first labour government in the world - which happened where you come from, in Queensland.
GEORGE NEGUS: That's right. We like the idea of firsts, but we're pretty selective about which people we put up there.

Robert A. George: Checking In I'd like to thank Steve for inviting me in as one of his guest bloggers over the next few days. In my day job, I write for the New York Post . Previous stops include the Republican National Committee and former Speaker Newt Gingrich's office. (Speaking of my ex-boss, readers may want to take a look at this column based on his UN reform Task Force report. Newt co-chaired the Task Force with George Mitchell and received a fair bit of praise from unlikely sources
Clearly, I am more on the right side of the political spectrum than most of Steve's readers and collaborators here in the blog. However, Steve is one of the smartest people I know in the public policy world particularly when it comes to international affairs and I'm lucky to be his friend. We don't agree on all issues, but we have some worthwhile intelligent conversations from our respective viewpoints.
I have also tipped my hat to him as being a ( the? ) worthy leader of the Bolton opposition.
Many of you may have gotten to know me when Steve graciously linked to my blog last week. "

for Statistical MT CLSP Homepage Workshop 2003 Thursday, September 1, 2005 Project Resources Team Photos Project Significant progress has been made in natural language processing (NLP) technologies in recent years, but most still do not match human performance. Since many applications of these technologies require human-quality results, some form of manual intervention is necessary. The success of such applications therefore depends heavily on the extent to which errors can be automatically detected and signaled to a human user. In our project we will attempt to devise a generic method for NLP error detection by studying the problem of Confidence Estimation (CE) in NLP results within a Machine Learning (ML) framework. more...
