The Worlds Of Oronce Fine
Mathematics, Instruments, And The Book In Renaissance France
12-13 May 2006
School of Art History, University of St Andrews in association with The French Vernacular Book Project Oronce Fine played an important role in the intellectual and cultural worlds of sixteenth-century France. His influence was expansive, ranging from mathematics to printing, cartography to technology. His lecturing and textbooks were instrumental in disseminating knowledge of the mathematical arts throughout Europe. This conference aims to shed new light on Fine and his worlds, his reception, influence, and legacy. Contributions are welcome on any aspects of Fine's life and work as well as on the subjects with which he was concerned (mathematics, astronomy, cartography, instrumentation, printing, pedagogy, humanism, etc.) in Renaissance France. Papers (no longer than twenty minutes) may be presented in either English or French. A selection will be published as an edited volume in the series St Andrews Studies in Art History. To submit a paper proposal or for further information, contact:

Charles Cameron
Early Players of the HipBone Games
It's just a little shocking to realize that the HipBones Games have been around a long, long time. Early Games may have been scribbled in the sands, but the earliest historical Game (ie: Game of which a record survives) is probably this one, seemingly played by the Holy Trinity in heaven during mediaeval times:
Here is another early board, this one from Oronce Fine, De sphaera mundi And here's Sir Thomas Browne's Quincunx Board: This quincunx is taken from the frontispiece to Browne's The Garden of Cyrus , and the quotation from Quintillian, VIII, iii, 9 reads: What is more beautiful than the well-known quincunx which, in whatever direction you view it, presents straight lines? Finally, HipBone's TenStones board derives its geometry from the Tree of Life diagram used in the Jewish meditative system of classical Kabbalah. Athanasius Kircher's version of this " Sephirotic Tree " illustrates the complexity with which graphs and diagrams of this sort have been used in various mystical circles though the Tree's original meaning is perhaps best left to the minds and hearts of the tzaddikim...

A Special Collections Exhibition The influence of Ptolemy Oronce Fine, World map, 1531 This world map by Oronce Fine shows the extraordinary development in cartography that was made possible by the coordinate system popularized by the successive editions of Ptolemy. Each half of the map relies on a polar projection, thus completely overthrowing previous ideas about proper priorities of representation. Fine was an interesting figure in that he was a professor of mathematics from 1531 at the University of Paris, where his patron was Francis I (1515-1547). This French king was the first of his line to see how useful maps would be in the process of government; later on, French mapmakers became closely allied with royal policy-makers. French Cartography
In the turbulent times at the beginning of the sixteenth century a new king came to the throne of France, Francis I, young, ambitious and opposed at every turn to Charles V's designs to impose his will on Europe and the New World. Unable to obstruct Charles in Europe, Francis turned his attention to the New World and, in 1523, dispatched a Florentine seaman, Giovanni da Verrazano, to attempt to find a North West passage, followed a few years later by Jacques Cartier, who completed three voyages to the St Lawrence (1534-41) and staked France's claim to the lands bordering the great river. These discoveries were recorded on world maps made about 1544 by Pierre Desceliers, one of the leading figures of the Dieppe School of Cartographers which flourished in the years 1530-60. Following the death of Francis I, France was plagued for half a century by religious wars of succession and a series of weak and unstable governments. Indeed, towards the end of the century Paris was in the hands of a revolutionary council and not until the Edict of Nantes in 1598 was any degree of stability achieved. In consequence, the orderly development of cartography which took place in Germany and England bypassed France until well into the next century . That is not to say, of course, that map production was entirely neglected. Apart from the work of the Dieppe map and chart makers, there were world maps by Oronce Fine and Andre Thevet which were copied by many cartographers and, some years before the issue of Waghenaer's sea charts, Nicolas de Nicolay, a widely travelled Frenchman, prepared navigational charts of many lands including one of the best maps to date of Scotland (1583).

CORDIFORM WORLD MAP OF ORONCE FINE, CA. 1536.
Although not printed until the mid-1530s, Oronce Fine began work on this double-sheet woodcut in 1518-19. Notable characteristics include the joining of the North American continent with Asia and the presentation of a large south polar region. There are two extant examples known: one in Nuremberg (dated 1534-36), and this one in the Bibliotheque Nationale. Reproduced in America: Early Maps of the New World, ed. Hans Wolff (Munich: Prestel, 1992), plate 88 (page 73) and as a full-size facsimile with commentary by Monique Pelletier (German and French texts) in the Cartographica Helvetica "Sonderheft" series, vol 9 (November 1995). Size of the original: 52 x 59 cm.

Historical Collections Exhibits Urania's Daughters: Women in Astronomy The Muse Urania has long personified astronomy, appearing in books and on maps as an elegant symbol for celestial science. Dressed in flowing, starry robes and surrounded by instruments, scientific diagrams, and portraits of important historical men, she imparts a womanly presence to what has been, until recent decades, a male-dominated field. Yet as early as the 17th century, women have broken this gender boundary. This exhibit shows how a variety of determined women excelled in this masculine world, frequently assisted by sympathetic fathers, husbands, and brothers. Women often began their astronomy careers as research assistants and tutors, and their published contributions range from popular works for children to highly technical studies of significant scholarly importance. By the mid-eighteenth century, books designed specifically for women began to widen the acceptance of female astronomical instruction. A century after that, women entered college for formal scientific education in ever-greater numbers. Please continue through the Universe in Your Hands exhibit to see two other cases on this special topic. In these exhibit cases, you can see historical artifacts that had women as astronomers, artists, publishers, and patrons.
