    Fine, Henry Burchard
Fine, Henry Burchard (1858-1928), the first and only dean of the departments of science, was one of the men who did most to help Princeton develop from a college into a university. He made Princeton a leading center for mathematics and fostered the growth of creative work in other branches of science as well. Nationally he was one of the group of men who, in Professor Oswald Veblen's words, ``carried American mathematics forward from a state of approximate nullity to one verging on parity with the European nations.'' Fine was the oldest of four children of a Presbyterian minister of Dutch ancestry in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. His father died when the children were young, and they were brought up by their mother, an able woman of strong character. (Three of her children became educators: Dean Fine; John B. Fine 1882, founder of the Princeton Preparatory School; and May Margaret Fine, founder of Miss Fine's School.) The family came to live in Princeton in 1875, and Henry entered the College the following year, graduating in 1880. Fine played the flute in the college orchestra, rowed on one of the crews, and served for three years as an editor of the

    Fine Hall,
Fine Hall, home of the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics, was dedicated in 1970 as a memorial to Henry Burchard Fine , the central figure in the early development of the mathematics faculty of the University. It replaced an older Fine Hall, built forty years earlier, which was renamed Jones Hall Fine Hall, which with its neighbor Jadwin Hall forms a center for mathematics and physics, is just west of Palmer Stadium. Fine Hall comprises a long three-story building, topped by a tower of ten additional floors. It is separated from Jadwin Hall by a plaza covering the underground joint mathematics-physics library. The long, three-story section contains classrooms and graduate student offices and studies. On the third floor is a common room with portraits of Dean Fine and two earlier Princeton mathematicians, Walter Minto and Albert B. Dod. On the second floor are two study rooms named for Luther P. Eisenhart, Fine's successor as chairman of the Department of Mathematics, and Samuel S. Wilks, founder of the Department of Statistics. The vertical lines of the tower counterbalance the horizontal mass of Jadwin Hall and provide a focal point for this architectural unit. Each floor of the tower, except the topmost, contains seven faculty offices and one seminar room. The entire top story is devoted to a professors' lounge, whose large picture windows afford panoramic views of the campus and the surrounding countryside.

An Introduction to the Frick Art Reference Library Welcome to the home page of the Frick Art Reference Library. This Library is one of the world's great repositories for the documentation and visual study of Western Art and serves as the research arm of The Frick Collection. The Library was founded in 1920 by Helen Clay Frick as a memorial to her father, Henry Clay Frick, to further her father's stated goals for The Frick Collection : “to encourage and develop the study of the fine arts, and to advance the general knowledge of kindred subjects.” Its mission has always been to gather photographs of paintings, drawings, sculpture, and illuminated manuscripts executed between the fourth and the mid-twentieth century by European and American artists; to collate with each photograph facts relating to the object’s history and present location; and to create a comprehensive research library for the study of Western art. Today the Library’s holdings of books, periodicals, auction sale catalogs, special collections and archives complement the photoarchive to comprise one of the world’s most valued art research centers and the most comprehensive resource on the history of collecting and patronage.
For more than seventy-five years, the Library has been committed to the highest standards in text and image collections development and public service to benefit the research of all members of the art community, including those who study art in its broader historical and cultural context. The historic and tranquil setting of the Library, adjacent to the Collection, welcomes all adults with a serious interest in art.

Thursday, September 16, 2004 Ben comes out of the exam room and tells Nikki and Mike that Henry is going to be OK, but he shouldn't be alone tonight and he shouldn't sleep for 12 hours. They agree to stay with him. They go back into the exam room with him. "Hello, angel of mine," Henry says to Nikki. "How much longer is he gonna be talking like this?" she asks. Ben explains that he has a grade one concussion, and just needs to relax for a while. "No problem," agrees Henry. "No strenuous exercise," adds Ben. "No problem," says Henry. "No alcohol," says Ben. "Uh, well, uh, Houston, we have a problem here," complains Henry. Nikki and Mike assure Ben they'll take care of him, and Ben gives them a list of over-the-counter medication. "Make sure you put martinis at the top of the list there, doc, okay?" requests Ben. "Hey, are we all set?" Mike asks Ben. "Yeah, just take it easy, Henry, and stay away from the rock walls," says Ben. "You're so beautiful," Henry says to Nikki. "Looks like we're spending the night together, buddy," says Nikki. "Am I, am I dreaming?" asks Henry. Today’s episode was directed by Jennifer Pepperman and written by Susan Dansby.

Monday, May 31, 2004 On today's show Henry comes home to the lonely cottage to find Katie and Simon, together again! With impeccable timing, Henry interrupts Katie and Simon as they are about to kiss. "Oh, my God. You're home," he says, seeing Simon. "Hey, and you're home!" he says when he sees Katie. "This is terrific! I knew you'd bust out of that place! Give us a hug, huh? Look at you. Look at you. God, you're beautiful. Isn't she beautiful? She is perfect," gushes Henry as he hugs Katie and holds her head in his hands. "She's perfect," agrees Simon. "And you, you sly dog, you. How'd you manage to free her from that funny farm?" asks Henry. "Actually, that's a good question. How did you know I was there?" wonders Katie. "He saw my ad. Yes, you did. You saw my ad in Soldier of Fortune . My brilliant ad. The one I put in code. Letting him know you were in trouble, where to find you - and it worked! I'm so good sometimes I scare myself," brags Henry. "I've got to hand it to you, Henry. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have known my wife was in trouble," says Simon. "Well, I'd do anything for Bubbles. You know that, don't you, Katie?" asks Henry, exchanging a look with Simon. "Yes, I do. Thank you so much. That place was awful. No one would listen to me, no one believed me - I thought I'd never get out. I am never going back," declares Katie. Margo walks in the open door and Henry asks her what she's doing there. "Dr. Tanner was wondering where his favorite patient had gone. My, how embarrassing. I guess my invitation to the homecoming party got lost in the mail," remarks Margo as she sees that Simon has returned.
