BARTHOLIN, Thomas

Students and faculty awarded the 2003 Susquehanna University Teaching Award to Associate Professor of Sociology Simona Hill . A prolific scholar who frequently collaborates with students and faculty colleagues, Hill holds the Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. She joined the Susquehanna faculty in 1998 and is co-director with Associate Professor of English Karen Mura of the Susquehanna Honors Program. She teaches courses in social problems, minorities, family, and ethnicity and pursues wide-ranging research interests in the areas of ethnographic field research, feminist pedagogy, race, gender, and ethnicity. In 2002-03 she served as co-coordinator, with Assistant Professor of English Amy Winans , of a year-long project to educate the campus community about the impact of invisible forms of diversity such as socio-economic status, religion, and sexual orientation. "She has sought consistently to demonstrate not only to her students, but also to her faculty and administrative colleagues, the relationship between wanting to know and the obligation to take action that may well follow from what one comes to learn," said Warren Funk , vice president for academic affairs, who presented the award at commencement.

Participants will engage in a variety of writing activities including group workshops, individual conferences, appearances by guest writers, and readings by students, faculty and guest writers. Additional workshops on college writing programs, literary magazines and publishing software will also be offered. During their "down time," students will have access to Susquehanna's field house and fitness center, the indoor pool, tennis courts, snack bar, computer center and library. Can you please tell me some history of the trigonometric ratio Tangent? who discovered it? when was it discovered and some other useful info... Hi Joeseph,
The place that I look for answers to this type of question is Earliest Known Uses of Some of the Words of Mathematics. This is a resource maintained by Jeff Miller, a teacher at Gulf High School in New Port Richey, Florida. In it he has TANGENT (as a trigonometric ratio) was introduced by Thomas Fincke (1561-1656) in his Thomae Finkii Flenspurgensis Geometriae rotundi libri XIIII, Basileae: Per Sebastianum Henricpetri, 1583. He wrote tangens in Latin. In English, TANGENT is found in 1594 in Exercises by Thomas Blundevil. There is also an answer to a similar question on Trigonometry here at Math Central. Cheers

Agner Krarup Erlang (1878 - 1929)
A.K. Erlang was the first person to study the problem of telephone networks. By studying a village telephone exchange he worked out a formula, now known as Erlang's formula, to calculate the fraction of callers attempting to call someone outside the village that must wait because all of the lines are in use. Although Erlang's model is a simple one, the mathematics underlying today's complex telephone networks is still based on his work. Agner returned home where he remained for two years, teaching at his father's school for two years and continuing with his studies. He also learnt French and Latin during this period. By the time he was 16 his father wanted him to go to university but money was scarce. A distant family relation provided free accommodation for him while he prepared for his university entrance examinations at the Frederiksborg Grammar School. He won a scholarship to the University of Copenhagen and completed his studies there in 1901 as an MA with mathematics as the main subject and astronomy, physics and chemistry as secondary subjects.

Bluefish Run Thick, Bass Scarce As Derby Enters Second Week By MARK ALAN LOVEWELL There is plenty of optimism on the waterfront this week at the start of the 59th annual Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. The entrants and the fish are back. "The fish are coming from all around the Island," said Martha Smith from the weigh station in downtown Edgartown this week, and she should know. Anglers are finding fish in all the favorite spots, from Wasque to Lobsterville to Squibnocket to the Edgartown harbor. The derby is a five-week contest that began last Sunday and will continue through Oct. 16. Anglers are hunting for the largest striped bass, bluefish, false albacore and bonito. There is plenty of reason to fish. The derby is offering a record $300,000 worth in prizes. The biggest prize is a 19-foot Boston Whaler Nantucket with outboard and trailer and a four-wheel-drive Chevrolet pickup truck. "It is a great first week," Mrs. Smith said. "I think it is a smarter derby. We have a huge number of contestants coming in. They recognize that the false albacore and bonito are the first fish to leave these waters, so they are concentrating on getting them now. They are fishing pretty hard and steadily."
