The name of John McCrae (1872-1918) may seem out of place in the distinguished company of World War I poets, but he is remembered for what is probably the single best-known and popular poem from the war, "In Flanders Fields." He was a Canadian physician and fought on the Western Front in 1914, but was then transferred to the medical corps and assigned to a hospital in France. He died of pneumonia while on active duty in 1918. His volume of poetry, In Flanders Fields and Other Poems , was published in 1919.

John Fields Boston native John Fields fell in love with pop music at an early age and taught himse lf to play guitar, bass, piano and drums. While playing in several local bands, he became fascinated with the art of recordi ng and set his sights on becoming a record producer. John moved to Minneapolis in his early 20's and established October Records and Funkytown Studios with his uncle, Steven Greenberg (who wrote the disco smash, "Funkytown"). John discovered, signed and produced numerous artists for October Records, including The Honeydogs, who later released albums on Mercury and Palm. During this time, John continued working as a musician, co-founding Greazy Meal, a rock/funk band that became very popular in the region. This experience helped to further strengthen John's skills as a producer, and his reputation spread among artists in the Midwest. John moved to Los Angeles in 2002, and has been busy ever since. McCrae's "In Flanders Fields" remains to this day one of the most memorable war poems ever written. It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle in the Ypres salient in the spring of 1915. Here is the story of the making of that poem: Although he had been a doctor for years and had served in the South African War, it was impossible to get used to the suffering, the screams, and the blood here, and Major John McCrae had seen and heard enough in his dressing station to last him a lifetime. As a surgeon attached to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, Major McCrae, who had joined the McGill faculty in 1900 after graduating from the University of Toronto, had spent seventeen days treating injured men Canadians, British, Indians, French, and Germans in the Ypres salient.

Getting to the fight, part II.
Here is another missive from Blake. Some of the pictures with this will cause a double-take. Continuing frequent commenter Blakes story that started here Back in the days when I worked out near the sharp end of the stick, I never gave much thought to logistics, unless the logistics system failed to work properly. The unit gets ordered out, airplanes show up, the unit would get on the airplanes, and off we'd go. At the infantry squad leader level, you don't NEED to worry about how the airplanes knew when and where to show up, and how whoever it was that sent them knew how many to send. You're far more concerned with making sure your people remembered to bring ammo, and rations, and water in their canteens... It's when you need more bullets, or more beans, or more fuel for your vehicles, or some spare parts, or trucks to move your platoon in lieu of a 20-mile approach march, and they don't show up, that logistics start becoming an issue to the guys out front. Problem is, without a whole lot of people working in the background, the stuff the guys out front need WON'T get there. And these days, that's where I, and a bunch of people like me, come in.

and the Fields Institute are pleased to announce the winner of the 2002 CRM-Fields Prize: John B. Friedlander of the University of Toronto. Abstract Many of the most famous old conjectures in mathematics arise from the theory of numbers and, of those, quite a few are concerned with prime numbers. One example is the Goldbach conjecture which predicts that every even integer, at least four, can be written as the sum of two primes. Questions about the distribution of primes began to see important progress during the nineteenth century, for the most part due to new developments in harmonic analysis and the theory of functions of a complex variable. Unfortunately these analytic techniques seem not to be capable of being adapted to the counting of primes in any but the simplest subsequences of the integers, such as for example the primes occurring in a short interval. Another line of attack, the ancient and elementary sieve method, seems more versatile and indeed can be formulated so as to provide an entry into rather general questions of this nature. Based on new ideas due to Brun and others during the first three quarters of the twentieth century, one was able to prove theorems which in various senses gave approximations to the desired conjectures. Whereas however, in contrast to the analytic method, one could say something worthwhile about a great many different problems, one could never seem (again in contrast to the analytic method) to prove the conjecture that was really wanted. Moreover, there were theoretical reasons which seemed to render this failure an inevitable outcome of the method.

John McCrae is the author of the famed poem, In Flanders Field, written during the First World War. John was born in 1872 and raised in Guelph, Ontario and is remembered as one of Guelph's most famous sons. McCrae was more than a poet, and was in fact a doctor, soldier, author and artist. The paternal grandparents of John McCrae, Thomas and Jean (nee Campbell) emigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1849 and settled in Guelph. Their son
