By Sir Andrew Macphail
Note: This html edition was prepared from an original Gutenburg text. See the Gutenburg boiler-plate. Contents: In Flanders Fields (1915)
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
The Anxious Dead (1917)
O guns, fall silent till the dead men hear
Above their heads the legions pressing on:
The Warrior (1907)
He wrought in poverty, the dull grey days,
But with the night his little lamp-lit room
Isandlwana (1910)
Scarlet coats, and crash o' the band,
The grey of a pauper's gown,
The Unconquered Dead (1906)
Not we the conquered! Not to us the blame
Of them that flee, of them that basely yield;
The Captain (1913)
Here all the day she swings from tide to tide,
Here all night long she tugs a rusted chain,
The Song of the Derelict (1898)
Ye have sung me your songs, ye have chanted your rimes
(I scorn your beguiling, O sea!)
Quebec (1908)
Of old, like Helen, guerdon of the strong -
Like Helen fair, like Helen light of word, -

27. Bagism: Library: The Dakota And Strawberry Fields Memorial
Pictures and thoughts from a personal visit to the Dakota Building and Strawberry fields Memorial in Central Park.
http://www.bagism.com/library/nyc-sf-dakota.html
The Dakota and Strawberry Fields Memorial O n December 8, 1995, the fifteenth anniversary of John's death, I was in New York City to attend the issue ceremony for new John Lennnon commemorative stamps. The ceremony was held at the Hard Rock Cafe and I invite all of you to read my account of the event. Later on in the day, my wife and I went to the Strawberry Fields memorial and the nearby Dakota building. I'd like to share with you some pictures and thoughts of my visit to these two sites which serve as reminders of John Lennon's life and death. T he Dakota building, located on the northwest corner of 72nd Street and Central Park West, was the place John Lennon called home for the latter part of his life. It is the place where he devoted all his attention to raising his son Sean. It is also the place where he was murdered as he and Yoko Ono were returning home late one night after their days' work at a recording studio. Strawberry Fields is the name given to a garden in Central Park dedicated in memory of John Lennon. The entrance to the memorial is located directly across the street (Central Park West) from the Dakota building. It is a triangular shaped piece of land whose main focal point is a beautiful circular mosaic of inlaid stones sent in from countries all over the world. In the center of the mosaic is John's simple plea to the world IMAGINE. W e took a cab from Midtown Manhattan through Central Park. I've been told the park is quite beautiful, but it was a complete blur to me. I was too busy thinking about our destination to realize that I should be enjoying my first ride through Central Park. Once there, we quickly found the path leading to the Strawberry Fields memorial. Perhaps it was so easy to find because it was punctuated by a street vendor selling Strawberry Fields t-shirts. We entered the pathway and about 20 feet into it we came upon the sign announcing the Strawberry Fields memorial.

John Charles Fields was of Scots-Irish extraction although his parents, Harriet Bowes and John Charles Fields, were both Canadians and lived at 150 King Street East, Hamilton. John Charles Fields Senior was a merchant who owned a leather shop at 32 King Street West, Hamilton, but travelled extensively in the United Kingdom and Europe. He died when his son was eleven years old. Fields attended Hamilton Collegiate Institute where he proved himself to be an outstanding pupil. He was awarded several scholarships and graduated from the Institute in 1880. After leaving Hamilton Collegiate Institute, Fields entered the University of Toronto in 1880 to study mathematics. His undergraduate years were not too easy, for having already lost his father, his mother died while he was in the middle of his university course. Despite this he had an outstanding undergraduate record and he received his B.A. in mathematics from the University of Toronto in 1884, winning the gold medal for mathematics. He then went to the United States to study for his Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University. After the award of the degree in 1887 for his thesis Symbolic Finite Solutions, and Solutions by Definite Integrals of the Equation

Database of Local Fields
John W. Jones and David P. Roberts
This site contains complete tables of low degree extensions of the fields Q p of p -adic numbers and also some interactive features. Details about the content and construction of the database are given in the following paper. A Database of Local Fields Some of the files underlying the database are also available at the bottom of this page.
Identify a p -adic algebra Q p x f x
Select the prime you want and enter your polynomial f(x) . The polynomial should be monic, separable, with integral coefficients, and in the variable x . Exponentiation is represented by ; multiplication can be represented by or left implicit. For example, you might enter x^4+3*x^2-x+1 or equivalently x^4+3x^2-x+1 If the resulting algebra involves fields not contained in this database, you will be told that too. Prime p Polynomial f(x)
Compute the Root Discriminant of a Galois Number Field
If all completions of Q x f x ) are in the database, then bounds for the root discriminant of the splitting field of f x ) are computed. This root discriminant is referred to as the Galois root discriminant (GRD) of

Title : In Flanders Fields Poet : John McCrae Date : 20 Feb 1999 In Flanders fields t... Length : Text-only version Prev Index Next Your comments on this poem to attach to the end [ microfaq siruguri@ In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders Fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders Fields. John McCrae I like the marching rhythm of this poem - short, insistent and conveying a mixture of inspiration and command. The imagery of the poppies in the field (esp. in the last stanza) is really beautiful, echoing the contrast between the exhuberance of Nature and the solemnity of Death, which the soldiers on the lush fields in Ypres must have felt very strongly. I suggested this poem about a week ago and have since seen "Saving Private Ryan", and that has increased the poignancy of it somewhat for me. Teaching
I enjoy teaching a wide variety of courses in the mathematics and computer science curriculum. Collaboration with undergraduates has included Nat Thiem, summer student from 1998, now on a post-doc at Stanford, and Andy Schultz '02, now in the graduate program in mathematics at Stanford. Research My research concerns the patterns which appear when one considers the roots of polynomials with integer coefficients. My interests range from computational aspects of Galois embedding problems to theoretical aspects of related algebraic objects, including character groups and Brauer groups of fields, Galois module structure of p-th power classes, and more general Galois module structure of Milnor K-theory.
