AF/F339: The Debate about Women in the Middle Ages
Value : 0.5 cu . Tutor : Dr Karen Pratt Teaching and assessment Two classes/seminars per week in Semester 2. Assessment by summer examination. Aims and Objectives The aim of this course is to trace the debate about women from the influential Roman de la Rose to the end of the Middle Ages. Arguments for the inferiority of women will be examined against a background of contemporary medical, theological and moral teachings. However, issues raised by Christine de Pizan and her opponents during the debate on the Roman de la Rose not only concern the political and ethical status of women, they are also closely allied to a debate about literature, language and sexuality/gender. Drawing on modern theories of gender and language we shall analyse the medieval discourses of misogamy and misogyny and investigate strategies used by pro-feminist writers to undermine and challenge them. Apart from affording insights into a fascinating aspect of medieval culture, this course aims to refine students' knowledge of Old and Middle French and their ability to appreciate the subtleties of medieval rhetoric through close textual reading. Select Bibliography Primary Texts N.B. Students will be expected to have read for this course

The Little Grey Horse Henry V's Speech at Agincourt and the Battle Exhortation in Ancient Historiography
Mogens Herman Hansen (Copenhagen Polis Centre)
SUMMARY
This article is a continuation of M.H. Hansen, "The Battle Exhortation in Ancient Historiography," Historia 42 (1993) 161-80, hereafter referred to as Hansen , and at the same time a reply to W.K. Pritchett, "The General's Exhortation in Greek Warfare," in Essays in Greek History (Amsterdam 1994) 27-109, hereafter referred to as Pritchett . In my reply I argue (a) that Pritchett's (repeated) view of how King Henry V addressed his army at Agincourt is (still) unconvincing, and (b) that Pritchett misrepresents my view of battle exhortations while, in his own treatment of the genre, he endorses what is one of the main points of my article, viz ., that apophthegms and short addresses to individual men and small contingents shouted to the soldiers as the general passed along the lines were later written up in rhetorical form as if the general had been standing in front of his army and addressed his men with a genuine speech. The article is concluded with a typology of battle exhortations to be developed in future studies.

  • Next message: Jean-Paul Le Fèvre: "Re: how to set username/password ?" I can't figure out how to set the username and the password
before opening a connection to a database. In the examples
coming with cayenne these data are read from an xml file
then a context is made available automagically.
But in a real application authentication is carried out by
asking the user a name and a password on a command line
or in input fields and then set programmaticaly before
    accessing the database.
Looking at the API I couldn't find the correct sequence
of statements leading to a context for a particular user and allowing to catch an exception is the connection is denied.

But for the time being I'm just evaluating (and learning) Struts and
Cayenne. I try to implement a very simple application and I would
on an instance of some object to eventually get a valid DataContext.
(For example with Sun JDO you can get a PersistenceManager from
    a factory by specifying a user/password)
I've seen in the doc that DataSourceInfo provides methods to set
name and password but I couldn't find out how to rely a DataContext
to a particular DataSourceInfo through a Configuration or a Domain
or whatever. Of course it is done by cayenne behind the scene in some way and I would like to code it by myself.

The nave of the church dedicated to saint Orien is Romanesque but a second nave or collateral was added in the 16th century. The church is decorated with a remarkable set of wall paintings dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, covering the apse, the south and west walls. The scene depicting the three dead and the three living meeting in a graveyard is characteristic. Three young horsemen are hunting with their hawks. In a graveyard, they are stopped by three decomposing dead, who remind them of the brevity of life and of the importance of the salvation of their souls.
