Chapter 8: Atmospheric Circulation and Pressure Distributions
2 definitions:
  • zonal wind – wind that blows west to east or east to west meridional wind – wind that has a strong north-south component
The Single Cell Model
  • developed by George Hadley (1685-1768) to try to explain why sailors encountered easterly winds in the lower latitudes Strong heating at the equator causes air to rise, and move toward the poles. At the poles, the air sinks because it has cooled during its journey and subsequently returns to the equator. If the earth were not spinning, this would lead to a northerly wind at the surface in the N.H. and a southerly wind at the surface in the S.H. With the rotation of the earth accounted for, the wind is deflected to the right in the N.H. by the Coriolis force and to the left in the S.H., leading to an easterly wind at the surface in both hemispheres. See Figure 8-1a This model does not adequately describe what we see on earth.
The Three Cell Model
  • developed by William Ferrel (1817-1891) to try to better describe the wind patterns on earth uses three cells: the Hadely Cell, the Ferrel Cell and the Polar Cell

CHURCHES:
BETHLEHEM (MARION)
Bethlehem Church was organized in 1827 or earlier, but the earliest records now available begin in 1839. This church united with the Muddy River Association in 1827, and in 1829 became a charter member of the Bethel Association. The messengers of Bethlehem Church to the Muddy River Association in 1827 were Dempsey Odum and Obediah West.
This church was the scene of a division on the modern mission question in southern Illinois. Elder Achilles Coffey, in his history, p. 76, wrote: "We will now proceed with the history of the Bethlehem Church, the Ferrels and their party. In the fall of 1839, there were sixty-one members belonging to said church; and when the vote, in relation to the Missionary question was taken, a large majority voted that they did not fellowship the system. The Ferrels and their party, which consisted of about twelve or fourteen in number, remonstrated against the act of the majority and utterly refused to be governed by it. In order to settle the difficulty the church solicited aid. Being present, I was appointed Moderator. Two tedious days were spent in the trial, which resulted in the exclusion of the Ferrels and party on charge of rebellion." The Ferrel party included William Ferrel and his two sons Wilerford and Hezekiah.
Bethlehem Church at first met in homes until a log building was erected on land given to the church by Brother Edmund Wiggs. The building, which is now gone, was located at the site of the Norman Cemetery. When the church closed, some of the remaining members united with the Pleasant Hill Church in Marion.

THE WILLIAM FERREL TIDE-PREDICTING MACHINE
This was the first tide predicting machine used in the United States. It was designed by William Ferrel, a mathematician with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, and completed in 1882. The machine summed 19 harmonic tidal constituents and gave direct readings of the predicted times and heights of the high and low waters. Predictions were made on this machine from 1885 through 1991. Introduction to Volume 2
The Decisive Year and Its Early Consequences
MAX H. FISCH The most decisive year of Peirce's professional life, and one of the most eventful, was 1867. Superintendent Bache of the Coast Survey had been incapacitated by a stroke in the summer of 1864. He died on 17 February 1867. Benjamin Peirce became the third Superintendent on 26 February and continued in that position into 1874. He retained his professorship at Harvard and, except for short stays in Washington, he conducted the business of Superintendent from Cambridge. Julius E. Hilgard served as Assistant in Charge of the Survey's Washington office. On 1 July 1867 Charles was promoted from Aide to Assistant, the rank next under that of Superintendent. He continued in that rank for twenty-four and a half years, through 31 December 1891. National and international awareness of the Survey was extended by two related episodes beginning in 1867. A treaty with Russia for the purchase of Alaska, negotiated by Secretary of State William Henry Seward, was approved by the Senate on 9 April, but the House delayed action on the appropriation necessary to complete the transaction. Superintendent Peirce was asked to have a reconnaissance made of the coast of Alaska, and a compilation of the most reliable information obtainable concerning its natural resources. A party led by Assistant George Davidson sailed from San Francisco on 21 July 1867 and returned 18 November 1867. Davidson's report of 30 November was received by Superintendent Peirce in January, reached President Johnson early in February, and was a principal document in his message of 17 February to the House of Representatives, recommending the appropriation. The bill was finally enacted and signed by the President in July.

The staff of the Joseph Henry Papers at the Smithsonian Institution collect, transcribe, edit, annotate, and publish the manuscripts of Joseph Henry, the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. They also supervise the Bell-Henry Library comprising the personal libraries of Alexander Graham Bell and Joseph Henry. To date, the editors have published five volumes of The Papers of Joseph Henry (Washington, D.C.: Smithsonian Institution Press, 1972-1985), a select, letterpress edition of Henry's correspondence, notebooks, diaries, and related manuscripts. Ten additional letterpress volumes and a complete microform edition of the manuscripts are planned.
This project forms a center for research in the history of science in nineteenth-century America. Particular strengths include American intellectual and cultural history, the history of the physical sciences including meteorology, and Federal policy in science. Collection: approximately 90,000 items related to Joseph Henry from over 300 depositories photocopied and on microfilm. Computer index is available by name, subject, date, and control number. Each index entry contains coded information which provides the document control number, microfilm or photocopy location, original depository location, transcription status, date, and names of the author, recipient, and other names and subjects mentioned in the document.

Cleveland Abbe
"Ol' Probabilities"
of the US Weather Bureau
Although Cleveland Abbe began his professional career studying the stars he soon became America's first, and best known, weather forecaster. Many consider him the true father of the US Weather Bureau where he spent his long career as meteorologist-in-charge from its establishment until his death in 1916 at the age of 78. Even Mark Twain called him "Old Probabilities" in recognition of his fame as a weather prognosticator.
Abbe was born December 3, 1838 in New York City, the eldest of seven children of George Waldo Abbe, a merchant, and Charlotte Colgate. Of his youth, he recalled shortly before his death: "My boyhood life in New York City has impressed me with the popular ignorance and also with the great need of something better than local lore and weather proverbs."
Abbe further remembered: "The popular articles in the New York daily papers by Merriam, Espy, Joseph Henry and others notably Redfield and Loomis had by 1857 convinced me that man could and must overcome our ignorance of the destructive winds and rains. It was in the summer of 1857 that I read the beginning of the classic article by William Ferrel in the MATHEMATICAL MONTHLY. I realized that he had overcome many of the hidden difficulties of the theories of storms and winds. From that day he was my guide and authority." Upon graduating in 1857 with a bachelor's degree (adding a master's degree in 1860) from the Free Academy (now the College of the City of New York), Abbe taught at Trinity Grammar School in New York from 1857 to 1858. Abbe then moved to teach at Michigan State Agricultural College and the University of Michigan from 1859 to 1860.

William Ferrel (1817 - 1891)
The NOAA Ship FERREL is named for Professor William Ferrel. Professor Ferrel was born in Bedford county, Pennsylvania, in 1817. He was a resident of Cambridge, Massachusetts, when he received an appointment on the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey, July 1, 1867. The work with which he was charged was the investigation of the General Theory of the Tides, a research to which he had already devoted much study, and the solution of which he had advanced quite beyond his predecessors. Professor Ferrel's inquiries and studies as to the influences affecting the tides led him to give special attention to meteorological effects on tides, and later the general theory of meteorology received from him a careful investigation, his contributions to science on this subject alternating for a series of years with those on Tides. His connection with the Coast Survey continued without interruption until he tendered his resignation, August 9, 1862, with the intention of accepting a position in the Signal Service. His resignation was formally accepted by the Superintendent, but with the expression of a desire on his part that Professor Ferrel would find time to complete for the Survey certain tidal investigations which he had been pursuing with eminent success, and that he would keep up the supervision of the tide predicting machine which he had invented. The theory and plan of this machine were first submitted to the Superintendent of the Coast and Geodetic Survey in the spring of 1880, and its construction was at once decided upon. Various delays occurred however in obtaining the services of a competent machinist, so that the actual construction was not begun until late in the summer of 1881, and it was not completed until the autumn of 1882.

Wilkinson and Wm. L. Wilkinson. At a court held 2 Feb 1818, Thomas Thurman, one of the executors named, took oath as executor, certificate granted him for obtaining a probate. Test: Phil. D. Dawe, Cl. Cur. At a court held for Pr.Wm.Co. Aug 1st 1826, Sanford Thurman and executor named in the will of Robert Thurman dec'd came into court and made oath as an executor, certificate is granted. The above will confirms that Thomas Thurman died in 1826, and that he and Margaret ("Peggy") Fewell are Robert Thurman's children. The question that naturally arises is: Is the William Fewell named as a grandson in the will the same as William S. Fewell, who platted the town of Manassas in 1865? The answer is "yes." The 1870 Virginia census index shows William S. FERREL (sic.) age 56, mw, at Manassas P.O., Prince William Co., p. 445. William F. Fewell, age 46, a "trans. agent," was living in Alexandria, Va., in 1860 (p.934 [834?]), with wife Elizabeth 46, and children Sarah 18, Bittie 16, Lucian 15, Wm. 15, Margaret 9, Fanny 5. An Elizabeth Fewell died in Alexandria 20 Mar. 1868, according to an obituary that appeared in the Alexandria Gazette. In 1850, William Fewell, aged 35, an engineer, b. Va, was living in Alexandria at a hotel managed by Silas J. Sanders (p. 707), There was also an entry for Wm. L. Fewell in Fairfax County (p. 194), perhaps his family home (entry not seen). From the evidence of Prince William records it appears that William S. Fewell was born 1813/14, son of James Fewell. In the 1820 and 1830 census indexes, James Fewell is the only head of household with that surname in Prince William County. In the personal property tax list for 1821, James Fewell has one white male tithable over age 16 (himself). In 1830 there are two, listed as "James Fewell and son." In 1833, he has three tithables: "James Fewell and 2 sons;" likewise 1834. In 1835, William S. Fewell first appears under his own name (at age 21), while his father loses one tithable. The other son appears to be Thomas T. Fewell, who first appears by name in 1836. Thomas was probably aged 19 in 1836; he is first counted as a tithable in 1833; he was probably born shortly after his grandfather's will was made (Oct. 1817) since he is not mentioned there. Their sister Elizabeth was probably b. ca. 1811. In 1842 I could not find Thomas in Pr.Wm.Co. (a Thomas F. Fewell is in Fairfax Co. 1850, p. 129), but William Fewell is still there, and "James Fewell and son" appears (another son?). I have not yet found a probate record for James Fewell. In the 1850 census of Pr.Wm. Co., p. 108, James Fewell, age 61, farmer, b. Va. is found. The only person in his household is Silas Burk, age 17, a laborer. The 1860 index for Va. shows James Fewell in Pr.Wm. Co. at Tudor Hall Post Office (p. 478). Pr.Wm.Co. probate indexes show that Elizabeth Thurman died by 1833, John Thurman died by 1847, and Sanford Thurman died 1858. William S. Fewell inherited property form his uncle Sanford Thurman, believed to include the nucleus of the original plat of Manassas. Search Google News May 6, 2001 E-mails indicate boy's age known To catch a woman accused of using the Internet to lure a 13-year-old Gaston County boy to Alabama for sex, the FBI resurrected e-mails deleted from the boy's computer and tracked the woman's online activity. Newly unsealed court documents say 42-year-old Gloria Ferrel, a mother of four, knew the boy's real age, even though she told the FBI she thought he was 18. The records, including a sworn affidavit the FBI used to obtain an arrest warrant, show how agents cracked the case and what the teen told investigators.
