Prof. Lueneburg, I assume, is referring to Ferrari's second letter
which was sent to Tartaglia on 1 April, 1547, which is known in the US
as "April Fool's Day." (Little pun intended.) He (Ferrari) claims to
have been present in Cardano's house when Tartaglia gave Cardano his
'inventiunculam', and as Prof. Lueneburg states, that no promises were
made, and, in effect or by implication, the gift was in return for
Cardano's hospitality. (Must have been a wonderful evening.) As Arturo Mena points out, in assessing the value of this statement one must not forget of Ferrari's strong partisanship towards Cardano.

This is not quite what the sources tell. First of all, there was no dispute

the history of the solutions of algebraic equations, starting with al-Hwarizmi,

Tartaglia with this knowledge. Tartaglia found finally the solution of the
30 problems Fiore had proposed. They were all of the same kind (except one)

History of Mathematics Term Paper, Rutgers, Spring 1999
Historians consider the Renaissance one of the outstanding periods of genius in world history. The Renaissance began in Italy about the 14th century, and reached its height in the 15th century. In the 16th and 17th centuries it spread to much of the rest of Europe. The word renaissance, which means "rebirth" in French, refers to the rediscovery by scholars, called humanists, of texts containing the achievements of the ancient Greeks and Romans. In fact, however, the Renaissance was a period of discovery in many fields - of new scientific laws, new forms of art and literature, new religious and political ideas, and new lands, including the Americas. Nevertheless, the recovery and the fuller appreciation of the writings, arts, and attitudes of the ancient Greeks was perhaps the most distinctive feature of the period. New ideas of grace, harmony, and beauty were inspired by the sculpture and other artistic remains of classical Greece and Rome. (Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia) In 1453 the fall of the Byzantine Empire was marked by the capture of Constantiople by the Turks, who had already overrun the rest of the Empire, including the Balkans; to cap this achievement they returned south, to capture the capital city of Constantinople. This event is said to have contributed greatly to the progress of learning in the West, according to Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia. Many Greeks entered Italy and brought with them manuscripts of Greek literature. This contributed to the process of modernity by reviving classic learning of ancient art and science. (This interpretation is disputed by many historians, among them George Sarton.) Men began once again to exercise their minds, so that they became less servile, and their ideas became clearer and stronger. During this period, men abandoned the medieval features of indistinctiveness of thought and instead began to cultivate Pure Mathematics and Astronomy.

To: IU Special Collections Italian Plays of the Renaissance FLORINDO CERRETA From Books at Iowa 2 (April 1965)
The University of Iowa Library's collection of Italian plays of the sixteenth century is a recent acquisition. Its forty odd volumes, though numerically few, constitute a nucleus around which it is hoped a larger collection will grow. It owes its origin to no special plan or fund, but only to the scholarly needs of faculty and students, at whose behest the books were purchased during the last decade. The aim of these acquisitions has been primarily not to duplicate works already plentiful in modern editions, but to purchase only those that have become rare or out of print. Thus the availability of reputable modern editions of the plays of better known dramatists like Machiavelli, Bibbiena, Aretino, Della Porta, Tasso, and Bruno, was a determining factor in the exclusion of these authors from our collection. In virtue of the criterion used in making the acquisitions, it follows that most of the books in the collection are valuable per se as rare editions. Still others are valuable for the fact that they are first editions.

Lodovico Ferrari
(Italien,1522-1565)

Mathematics Pronunciation Guide
A Megametamathematical Guide, for the Diacritally Challenged, of the Proper American English Pronunciation of Terms and Names This guide includes most mathematicians and mathematical terms that may been encountered in high school and the first two years of college. Proper names are generally pronounced as in the original language.
Some entries are obscure and may be useful only in a game of mathematical trivia, e. g. d'Alembert's
mother, the name of the line in a fraction, or who shot Galois.
I have not had the time to include most definitions or accomplishments. The curious person may try searching the internet for such information. However I have given a few, they are indicated with Move the curser to the symbol and wait a second.
D ates include B.C. or A.D. only if the choice is not obvious from the context.
The Guide is not complete, I will be adding more pronunciations and entries as time permits. (I did not give up my day job.) (The red dates and purple pronunciations are not links.)

The History Of Ferrari Ferrari, a symbol of passion, style, and technology.
The oldest surviving, the most well known, and the most loved team in Grand Prix Motor Racing.
What is it about Ferrari that makes so many thousands, millions even of people, all around the world, rejoice when they do well? (Sadly there was a period where the Tifosi did very little of that, but the good times they are-a-here again...)
I don't know. I can't answer that question, except to say that Ferrari is not just another Formula One team... something about it makes a great many people, including myself, want to make it a part of them and absorb it into their soul.
The cars always look so beautiful; maybe that is what attracts so many people to the team. The models after the 1996 car (F310) don't look as nice as they once did, but Ferrari still always produces a car that seems to look more beautiful than any other car on the grid.
Scuderia Ferrari was in its early days nothing more than a team running privateer Alfa Romeo's really. The team’s founder, the much-loved Enzo Ferrari, was born in 1898, into a pretty rich family in Modena, Italy.
The family owned a car by the time Enzo was still very young, when cars were rare, and this is probably what sparked his passion for the sport of motor racing.

Mnoge velike matematièke ideje i dokazi teorema u povijesti nisu prošli glatko, odnosno izazvali su kontroverze unutar svijeta matematièara. Ponekad se radilo o sukobima oko prvenstva ("ja sam to prije dokazao!"), ponekad oko toènosti rezultata ("krivo si to dokazao!"), ponekad oko autorstva ("ukrao si mi teorem!"), a ponekad opet oko smislenosti neke matematièke teorije ("tvoja matematika nema smisla!").
