He began his career as the servant of Gerolamo Cardano. He was extremely bright, so Cardano started teaching him mathematics. Ferrari aided Cardano on his solutions for quadratic and cubic equations, and was mainly responsible for the solution of quartic equations that Cardano published. While still in his teens, Ferrari was able to obtain a prestigious teaching post after Cardano resigned from it and recommended him. Ferrari eventually retired young (only 42) and quite rich. He then moved back to his home town to take up a professorship of mathematics in 1565. Shortly thereafter, he died of arsenic poisoning, allegedly murdered by his sister. Born in Bologna in 1522. Often, the tags given to Ferrari cars have a name as well as a technical reference. It usually comes from the place where the car originated, like Maranello or Modena, or it perfectly suits the excellence of the model, as in the name `Enzo Ferrari´ being used on the limited edition series inspired by Formula 1. Now, Luca di Montezemolo has felt the desire for another name to be linked to the conception of a new model: Sergio Scaglietti. Scaglietti was a master in working aluminium and the creator of some of the most famous Ferrari models. He worked alongside the founder of the company in the heroic early years that brought the first global successes. The elegant new model is constructed entirely in aluminium. And, following Ferrari tradition, the 612 Scaglietti is the perfect combination of the pure Ferrari performance and a cabin that can seat four adult passengers. For the first time ever on a 12 cylinder Ferrari, the construction is all-aluminium. The model was built by Ferrari in the Scaglietti workshop, a workshop dedicated to light alloy technology.

In spite of an onslaught by a slew of factory-entered Ford GT 40s, Ferrari finished 1-2-3 at the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans. Henry Ford II then had lapel buttons made declaring "Ford Wins Le Mans in '66," promising the world that his company would and threatening the jobs of anyone at Ford who wasn't with the plan. Ongoing development made the Ford GT faster and more reliable, and an all-star team of drivers was recruited. Ferrari relied on small displacement, high-winding single-overhead-cam V-12s, while Ford approached the job hot-rod-style: lots of cubes, one cam, and a pair of four-barrel carburetors. Here, the Ford Mark II driven by Graham Hill and Brian Muir leads the Ferrari P3 of Lodovico Scarfiotti and Mike Parks. In the end, it was Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon leading Ford's own 1-2-3 overall overall victory, the first of Ford's four wins. advertisement

PART 2: FROM THE TARGA FLORIO TO LE MANS
Different strategies at Ferrari, Ford and Porsche After the 1,000-kilometre races of Monza and Spa, it bec o me s obvious that Enzo Ferrari 's first goal for 1967 is to win the FIA Constructors World Championship. At the Sebring 12-hours doubts were raised that Ferrari was less interested in winning this World Championship than in winning Le Mans 1967. Indeed, before starting at Daytona the Prancing Horse let knew the press that, if the Daytona 24-hours outing was blessed with success, Maranello should send works cars to the second round at Sebring. However no Ferrari works cars were seen at the Florida airfield. What happened? Mauro Forghieri , first engineer at Maranello, insisted upon Franco Lini , Ferrari's new race director, to send no factory cars to Sebring, in order to respect the scheduled production of at least four new Ferraris 330P4 for Le Mans. By going to Sebring at least three weeks should be lost, bringing the Le Mans project in danger.

Of Ferrari's seven +2-litre prototypes only the three 330P3s - two Berlinettas and one Barquetta - are able to go as fast as Ford's eight 7-litre MkIIAs. The four Ferraris 365P2/P3 are - except for the total rebodied #18, entered by Luigi Chinetti's N.A.R.T. - highly unreliable. The yellow #17, entered by Jacques Swaters for the Écurie Francorchamps, was unable to finish on ly once at the four endurance races it earlier entered. And even if they should be able to reach the finish, they can hardly beat Ford's four Group 4 (S3) GT40 sportscars. Moreover Filipinetti's #19 was never raced this year. The colonel's (Ronnie Hoare of Maranello Concessionaires, England) #16 was only raced at short British races, however without results. Last but not least the three Dinos 206S - two barquettas and one berlinetta - can hardly do any better than beating the 2-litre Porsches, as they did earlier at the Spa 1,000-kms and the Nürburgring 1,000-kms. However, on such a fast circuit as Le Mans, under 2-litre cars can never compete for overall victory, in the best case for a place among the top-6.

    1967 Ford Mk IV
    From the notes:
"Le Mans in 1967 was really a shootout between the Italian racing icon, Ferrari and the neaveau American Ford. Ferrari had been fielding racing cars since 1947, had been to Le Mans 18 times, every year since 1949. They began a program of development with the idea of winning at Le Mans. The car was known as the GT-40. It was powered by the 289 cubic inch V-8. The had scored no victories in 1964 and only one in 1965. They turned back to the American basic of more cubic inches and pulled out the big V-9, the 437 and 4-barrel carburetors.
"In 1966 the 'new' 7.0 liter GT-40, known as the GT-40 MK II, got the job done. Winning at Daytona and Sebring and finishing 1, 2 and 3 at Le Mans had shocked Ferrari and pleased Henry Ford but Ford wanted more. A new car was developed from the ground up to take the big motor, proper car, the Mark IV. Ferrari set about to show Ford what a 'real' racing car was meant to be. It would be a lightweight 4.0 liter V-12 with 4 overhead camshafts, 36 valves, dual ignition (24 spark plugs) and fuel injection. The body would be of super slipper design in aluminum in both open and closed versions.
"After the start of the race Gurney took the lead into the 2nd hour and never gave it up. The Mark IVs held first and second through the eleventh hour when the Ferrari P4 of Mike Parks and Lodovico Scarfiotti move into 2nd. The expected to up the pace as daylight came and press the Ford until it surrendered. It never happened. The unlikely team of Gurney and Foyt dove to victory ahead of two Ferraris and teammates McLaren and Donohue.

    History
Auto racing originated as a way of testing the new vehicles for speed and endurance. In 1923, the Automobile Club of the Sarthe, which had established the first French Grand Prix, decided to organize a race that would test not only around-the-clock endurance but also auto headlights, which were still in their infancy. The result was the first 24 Hours of Le Mans race, originally called the Grand Prix of Endurance. The first race began at 4 p.m. May 26, 1923, during a tempestuous rain storm accompanied by bursts of hail. Thirty-five cars from 18 different manufacturers entered that race. When it ended at 4 p.m. the following day, the winner was a Chenard and Walcker "Sport" driven by Andre Lagache and Rene Leonard. The car covered 2,209.536 kilometers at an average speed of 92.064 kilometers per hour - about 57.2 miles an hour. Although the reliability of headlights is now taken for granted, the 24 Hours of Le Mans is still a major test of the endurance of an auto, driven continuously at high speeds. Teams originally included only two drivers. Since 1977, a team has been allowed, but not required, to have three drivers.
