Going with the flow
Ray Girvan looks at the ubiquitous but little-understood Navier-Stokes equations In May 2002, the Clay Mathematics Institute (CMI) of Cambridge, Massachusetts, in an initiative to further the study of mathematics, allocated a $7m prize fund for the solution of seven Millennium Problems, 'focusing on important classic questions that have resisted solution over the years'. One of the $1m problems stands out for its massive practical importance: the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations (NSEs) for fluid flow. Although there are many named variants and special cases, the fundamental equations are the incompressible Navier-Stokes for Newtonian fluids. In their most compact form, they comprise a pair of vector partial differential equations (PDEs): one expresses the forces acting (pressure, viscosity and body forces); the other is the continuity equation, which says that divergence of the velocity field is zero for an incompressible fluid (that is, 'what comes in, goes out'). The NSEs are among the most-studied partial differential systems, the subject of around 15-20 published papers a week. Nevertheless, they're among the least understood at a theoretical level. Charles Fefferman writes in the problem statement paper, Existence and Smoothness of the Navier-Stokes equation, 'Fluids are important and hard to understand. There are many fascinating problems and conjectures about the behaviour of solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. Since we don't even know whether these solutions exist, our understanding is at a very primitive level.'

In particular, we will describe manifolds with conformal holonomy in SU(1,m), which can be seen as conformal analogs of Calabi Yau manifolds. We will explain how such manifolds can be obtained from CR manifolds with positive definite Levi-form.

CARMEN BALTHROP
WORLD-CLASS SOPRANO CARMEN BALTHROP, whose voice critics have described as "pure silver," enjoys an internationally acclaimed vocal career spanning both modern and classical repertoire. Her Metropolitan Opera debut was as Pamina in Die Zauberflote by Mozart. She has performed in concert at the Kennedy Center and the White House, as well as on stage at the major music festivals and concert halls throughout North America, Europe, Russia and the Far East. A national advocate for the arts, she has even performed an aria in the U.S. Senate. Recent appearances have included a recital as well as master classes in Moscow with the students of the Moscow Conservatory and a four-city tour of the Netherlands which culminated in a compact disc recording of unique and rare Christmas art songs. Not only does Balthrop give voice to a world of beautiful music, she shares her expertise as both teacher and mentor to aspiring vocalists at the University of Maryland where as associate processor of voice she has taught master classes for the past 10 years. This past January, Balthrop gave back-to-back performances of two operas, in two cities, in two weeks. Such is the energy she brings to her students, whom she teaches one-on-one.
