He was trained to be a weaver like his father.
After he had shown his ability in mathematics, the city of Ulm appointed him town mathematician, standards master, and surveyor. As far as I can tell, he retained this position for the rest of his life. He founded a school in Ulm in 1600, and from 1604 he was paid a salary of 30 gulden.
He did a great deal of work on fortifications for Basel (1622), Frankfurt (1630), Randegg, Schaffhausen, Fuerstenberg, Memmingen, Lauingen, and other cities.

Back to Math Words Alphabetical Index Acre
The root of the word acre is the Greek agros for field. The same root gives us many modern words related to agriculture. Although the original root described any open area, by the time of the Anglo-Saxons it was used more specifically as the amount of land a yoke of oxen could plow in one day. Sometime in the middle ages it was set equal to its current size, a unit of land equal to 4840 square yards, or 43,560 square feet.
Antares
The brightest star in the Southern Hemisphere is actually a double star system approximately 424 light years from the earth in the constellation of Scorpio. The name antares tells what it is not, literally meaning "not Mars" drawn from anti , for not, and Ares which was the Greek name for the Planet Mars. Ares was the Greek God of War. Because both the planet and the double star have a reddish color, they may have often been confused, leading to the name of the star.
Bernoulli Numbers
Student's often learn to find the sum of the counting numbers, 1+2+3+...+n by using the formula (n)(n+1)/2. Later they may even discover a formula for the sums of squares, . Around 1631, a mathematician named

Michael von Faulhaber was born in Klosterheidenfeld, Germany , on 5th March, 1869. He taught in Strasbourg before becoming Bishop of Speyer in 1911. A strong supporter of Germany's involvement in the First World War , Faulhaber was appointed Archbishop of Munich-Freising in 1917. Four years later he was made a Cardinal. After Adolf Hitler obtained power in 1933 Faulhaber tried to ma intain good relations with the government while seeking to preserve the power of the Catholic Church. In 1934 he published Judenum, Christentum, Germanentum , a book that defended the principles of racial tolerance and humanity and called for the people of Germany to respect the Jewish religion. However, Faulhaber, and other Catholic bishops, made no open protest against the atrocities being committed against the Jews in Germany.

The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of
By Ian Taylor
The history of the rise of humanism in Europe is the record of society's change in the way of thinking from being God-centered to becoming man-centered. This change was partially a reaction against the authoritarian rule by theologians who used Scripture to interpret nature but relied upon the writings of Aristotle to make those interpretations. [More than just a reaction to theologians, the change was also the "birth pangs" of the end-times rebellious spirit of man. He was rebelling against theologians, kings and all authorities, including God. Ed] This change in thinking began in the sixteen-hundreds and has continued into the present day but two names are recognized by historians as being more responsible than any other for initiating this humanist world view. Those two names are Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes. For example, the Harvard political historian Mark Henrie writing in 1987 said: "...modern rationalists with their complete skepticism about and animus towards existing social arrangements are most directly the heirs of Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes, who defined knowledge as universal human agreement based upon an infallible technique available to all: the scientific method. This narrow theory of knowledge is largely responsible for the prevalence of a mechanistic metaphor for reality and for the modern triumph of moral relativism, a perennial philosophical heresy which only in our age has presumed the robes of sacred truth."

In identifying certain historical persons involved with Rosicrucianism we need to keep in mind that because of various religious and political persecutions of centuries past, Rosicrucians, for obvious reasons, were sworn to secrecy regarding their membership. Even known Rosicrucian apologists such as Robert Fludd and Michael Maier never publicly verified their Rosicrucian affiliation. And yet, we know that a number of historical figures were Rosicrucian, and if one looks closely there are various references suggesting Rosicrucian affiliation that are often overlooked by historians as being insignificant. For example, the Royal Society of today is derived from the efforts of a group of known Rosicrucians: Theodore Haak, John Pell, and Samuel Hartlib, to name but a few. The group was first known as the "Invisible College," later as the "Rosicrucian College," and finally as the "Royal Society" a name conferred by King Charles II in 1662.

Welcome to my genealogy web page. My name is Dagmar Swihart. I've been researching for several years now. My mother-in-law introduced me to this never ending hobby...and I love it!
My family on my fathers side is from the Hamburg area in Germany; as far as I have found. I have found the von Hacht name in Hamburg starting in 1450, but I haven't been able to link them yet. At that time, the name was spelled von Hachede. Most of these relatives were farmers. Here I have a picturemap , which I have taken from a schoolatlas. This picturemap was mad in the hear 1936. It is not a map in the sense of a regular map, but it will let you look at Hamburg and the surrounding area in the year 1936. I am hoping that it will help find a village, that was in the area of Hamburg. Most of the villages, that are shown on this map, belong today to Hamburg. On these pages I have an index of names, who had received a coat of arms from the city of Hamburg. Check it out and see if your family had a coat of arms.

Modern Developments

1. Introduction The development of perspective had fundamental consequences for science, art, the environment and the imagination. Each of these domains will be considered in turn in the chapters that follow. 2. Astronomy Ever since the Babylonians, there had been observation of the heavens and, already in Antiquity, there were instruments to observe the apparent motions of the planets and stars. Yet the focus of attention was on finding a pattern for phenomena such as eclipses of the sun and moon. Since the heavens were assumed to be unchanging, astronomy became primarily a conceptual problem of accounting for a set of recurring events. Indeed, once a basic catalogue of stars visible to the naked eye had been made, there was little incentive to look more closely. Hence, paradoxically, although ancient astronomy produced various instruments for observation of the heavens, it remained in many ways unvisual: a question of deceptive appearances1 rather than of visual truth. The development of the planisphere and astrolabe2 imposed a deductive grid on the heavens, not unlike that of Ptolemy's projection in his
