Scientific Letters of
Sir Joseph Banks
6 Volume Set The Pickering Masters Editor: Neil Chambers As President he fostered enlightened relations between scientists across Europe throughout a period of conflict and turbulent change. He was a founder member of numerous important societies, many of which survive today, including the Linnean Society, 1788, the Royal Institution, 1799, and the Royal Horticultural Society, 1804. Banks was Special Director of the Royal Gardens at Kew from 1773, which flourished under his control. Voyages of discovery were mounted with his help to explore new lands, to obtain and move plants from one part of the world to another, and to further British interests abroad. He was also a privy councillor, and an advisor to George III and successive governments. Using this publication historians of science and students of eighteenth- century culture and society will be able to trace the network of correspondents Banks created, and thereby understand how he came to direct events so widely. 1.0 A PLURALITY OF TUNING SYSTEMS.
1.1 PYTHAGOREAN TUNING.
This is an ancient way of tuning instruments used during
the Middle Ages. It is based on a series of pure fifths that
gives very consonant results if thirds are avoided.
Major thirds are larger and minor ones are smaller in that
system.
Nevertheless, most of the medieval music, written in
pythagorean tuning, was vocal. Singers could adjust their
intonation to reach pure thirds. These intervals were also used scarcely since unison, octave, fourths and fifths were considered as the most consonant intervals (Texier 1999). These perfect fifths added to each other would extend the range beyond an octave. This is why a transposition to the lower octave was done to obtain the Pythagorean diatonic scale but there was a problem in the first place: after twelve fifths added to each other, One would not obtain a perfect

NAMHO NEWSLETTER 43 - Summer 2002
SPECIAL ABERYSTWYTH CONFERENCE EDITION
8 - 11 July 2002
INTRODUCTION TO ABERYSTWYTH AND THE NAMHO 2002 CONFERENCE WELCOME TO ABERYSTWYTH
Today, as well as continuing to provide a service centre for the agricultural and tourist industries, Aberystwyth has become a significant cultural centre for Wales. The National Library/Llyfrygell Genedlaethol Cymru, the University, the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments in Wales and the Arts Centre all play important roles at national and local levels. Surrounded as it is with impressive countryside, a large section of which is designated as a Landscape of Outstanding Historic Interest having mining at its centre, Aberystwyth provides an outstanding location for the NAMHO 2002 conference. The conference theme, the application of water power, will strike a chord with most, if not all, mining historians. It has an international appeal which is reflected in the lecture programme. Delegates will also have the opportunity to explore the theme in visits to mines in the hinterland to Aberystwyth as it is no coincidence that the high rainfall of the Ceredigion Uplands and its location, remote from the coalfields, promoted the extensive use of water power. The conference and its location are yours to enjoy. Please make full use of the facilities, visits the trade stands and poster displays in Penbryn Hall, and above all interact with the contributors and other delegates.

Retracing the Footsteps of Man
Beginnings of an ambitious project on the genetic wanderings of humans
By Francis Aymonier Epoch Times Staff Aug 07, 2005
SOME THINGS JUST DON’T CHANGE: Recently discovered 40,000-year-old human footprint in Mexico made in volcanic ash (T) compared with a modern footprint on a San Francisco concrete sidewalk (B). National Geographic and IBM have embarked on a project to retrace the footsteps of our ancestors as they traveled the planet. (Liverpool John Moores University - Bournemouth University/A. Muir Ellsmore /The Epoch Times) High-resolution image (1017 x 1128 px, 300 dpi) National Geographic and IBM recently embarked on a new project to retrace the paths humans followed as they populated the planet. Over 100,000 people from around the world will have their DNA tested to help discover exactly how humans have relocated throughout the ages. National Geographic and the computer group IBM announced at a press conference in May that they would cooperate on the project, titled Genographic. The companies’ representatives said they would go ahead with the research to discover the genetic ties between peoples, despite the risk of opposition from anti-racist and human rights groups.
