Retracing the Footsteps of Man
Beginnings of an ambitious project on the genetic wanderings of humans
By Francis Aymonier Epoch Times Staff Aug 07, 2005
SOME THINGS JUST DON’T CHANGE: Recently discovered 40,000-year-old human footprint in Mexico made in volcanic ash (T) compared with a modern footprint on a San Francisco concrete sidewalk (B). National Geographic and IBM have embarked on a project to retrace the footsteps of our ancestors as they traveled the planet. (Liverpool John Moores University - Bournemouth University/A. Muir Ellsmore /The Epoch Times) High-resolution image (1017 x 1128 px, 300 dpi) National Geographic and IBM recently embarked on a new project to retrace the paths humans followed as they populated the planet. Over 100,000 people from around the world will have their DNA tested to help discover exactly how humans have relocated throughout the ages. National Geographic and the computer group IBM announced at a press conference in May that they would cooperate on the project, titled Genographic. The companies’ representatives said they would go ahead with the research to discover the genetic ties between peoples, despite the risk of opposition from anti-racist and human rights groups.

    IN THE BEGINNING
To even call this section "Zero History" is, in itself, a bit of a contradiction because Zero and its "history" are in a constantly evolving process. For the sake of keeping the "facts" straight, the band was "born" in a studio to drummer Greg Anton and guitarist extraordinare Steve Kimock in 1984. The duo had worked together in a Bay Area band called The Ghosts and brought their talents to a studio built in a converted horse barn in West Marin, Calif. It was here that they began to experiment and hone a sound that would serve as the roots of what Zero is today. This is certainly not the most dramatic or romantic beginning to what has become a musical odyssey in the history (there's that word again) of the band.

Resources for Library History Devonshire Collection Derby Local Studies Library The Devonshire library, donated to the new Derby Free Library in 1881, was the first of two great local history collections that form the backbone of the present Derbyshire Collection of Derby Library. That first Derbyshire-themed collection, the volumes and manuscripts presented by the dukes of Devonshire, significantly enhanced the status of the institution, which had just been established in 1878. Support for libraries by Victorian aristocrats and businessmen was common, usually motivated by religious, political and social considerations. The role of regional urban institutions such as public libraries in the formation and reinforcement of urban provincial identity was important then and remains so today. Collections devoted to local subjects, notably regional, county, or urban histories, have always had a special value and influence in provincial libraries. The Devonshire Collection bookplate (12.5 cm by 8.3 cm) shows the arms of the Cavendish family, who were earls and then dukes of Devonshire. The arms show sable, three bucks’ heads cabossed argent with the crest of a serpent nowed proper. The motto “cavendo tutus” translates as “secure by caution.” The family originated in the Sussex village of Cavendish and became established at court by the sixteenth century.
