Gino Fano 's father was Ugo Fano and his mother was Angelica Fano. Ugo Fano came from a wealthy family and he had no need for employment. Ugo Fano was a follower of Giuseppe Garibaldi and strongly in favour of Italian unification. In fact on 17 March 1861, ten years before Gino's birth, the Kingdom of Italy was formally created but it was only just before Gino was born that Italian troops captured Rome. Gino grew up in the newly created country which suffered many problems but also had a new confidence in education. Fano studied at the University of Turin which he entered in 1888. His studies there were directed by Corrado Segre and he was also influenced by Castelnuovo . In fact Castelnuovo had been appointed as D'Ovidio 's assistant in Turin the year before Fano began his studies and Corrado Segre had been appointed to the chair of higher geometry in Turin the year that Fano entered the University of Turin. This was an exciting place for research in geometry and it is not surprising that Fano was led to specialise in this area.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Ugo Fano Ugo Fano , a leader in theoretical physics in the century was born in Torino Italy , in and passed away on February 13 in Chicago Illinois , at the age of 88. His father was Gino Fano , a prominent European mathematician and his brother, Robert Fano is an eminent professor emeritus of electrical engineer at MIT . Ugo's wife, Lilla Fano, also a physicist , co-authored a well known book with Ugo on atoms and molecules, (U. Fano and L. Fano, Basic Physics of Atoms and Molecules (John Wiley, New York, 1959)). His cousin, , made great contributions to the quantum theory of angular momentum (well-known as Racah algebra) wrote a concise monograph with Ugo on the subject (U. fano and G. Racah, Irreducible Tensorial Sets (Academic Press, New York, 1959). Ugo Fano had a major impact in sustained work over six decades on atomic physics and molecular physics , and earlier on radiological physics. There's hardly an area of current research in these subjects where he has not made a fundamental contribution. Such profound phenomena as the
