Schooling: Religous Order, D.D.
Following his studies at the institut in Belley, he entered the Jesuit novitiate in Avignon in 1626, remaining until 1628. In the fall of 1628 he went to the Collège de la Trinité in Lyon, where he completed his course in Scholastic philosophy in 1630 under Claude Boniel. From 1632 to 1636 he studied theology in Lyons.
The Collège certainly sounds like a standard Jesuit college, which was not a university. He would have had the equivalent of a B.A. and, as a full Jesuit, a doctorate in theology.

Affiliation: Catholic
Entered Jesuit novitiate in Avignon in 1626. became a priest in 1635.
6. Scientific Disciplines
Primary: Mathematics, Physics, Astronomy
Subordinate: Optics
In his principal mathematical work, Opusculum geometricum, Fabri approached, through the functional reinterpretation of Cavalieri's concept of indivisibles by means of a dynamic concept of fluxus, ideas similar to those of Newton. The book originated in connection with the controversy over cycloids and Pascal's challenge.

The book is dedicated to Lamartinière and, to prevent unauthorized reprintings, the dedicatory epistle is initialed by the author as required in the Avis (p. xii). While German contemporaries such as Richter and Haller held a rather low opinion of the book, it served as a standard authority for nearly thirty years and later historians have viewed it as a more than adequate work for its period.

Jesuit's bark
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Chinchona officinalis Jesuit's Bark , also called the Peruvian Bark , is the historical name of the most celebrated specific remedy for all forms of malaria . It is so named because it was obtained from the bark of several species of the genus Cinchona , of the order Rubiaceae , that have been discovered at different times and are indigenous in the Western Andes of South America and were first described and introduced by Jesuit priests who did missionary work in Peru . Other terms referring to this preparation and its source were "Jesuit's Tree", "Jesuit's Powder" and "Pulvis Patrum" Formerly, the bark itself, prepared in different forms, was used as a drug , but later in the 19th and early 20th centuries, natural harvesting of immense quantities formed the base of the production of cinchona alkaloids . This industry was carried on principally in Germany , and the Dutch and English cinchona plantations in Java Ceylon and India were the chief sources whence the raw material was supplied. Its main active principle

Systema Saturnium...
Christiaan Huygens and his Systema Saturnium
Christiaan Huygens (pronounced How'-kenz) was born in The Hague, Netherlands, on April 14, 1629. He had the good fortune to be born into a prominent Dutch family with his grandfather, father, and brother serving as secretaries and diplomats to the ruling house of Orange. Huygens did not enter into government service as his interests turned toward science and mathematics. He could do this primarily because his father set him up with an allowance which enabled him to concentrate entirely on his studies. From 1650, when he left college, to 1666, Huygens lived at home and conducted his research with only three brief interludes in which he visited Paris and London. Huygens's time at home proved very fruitful for his scientific research. He published three mathematical books, produced a manuscript on hydrostatics, wrote a work on collision of elastic bodies, did research on centrifugal force, and invented the pendulum clock. Huygens was also interested in geometrical optics and, together with his brother, experimented with grinding lenses for microscopes and telescopes. Huygens turned his new telescopes to the heavens in 1655 and began making regular observations of the planets, stars, and comets. Huygens was particularly intrigued by Saturn, mainly because of its puzzling appearance. To an observer using a telescope from the early 17

That this paper is part of a larger project on the reception of modern science and philosophy in Brazil and Iberian American, sponsored by FAPEMIG in 2000, and by CAPES in 2001, as part of my pos-doctorate research at the Latin American Studies Center at the University of Maryland, College-Park, USA. About the birthday of anthropology in sixteenth century Iberia see Green, Otis. op. cit. vol.3 I am yet in the beginning of the research, during which I plan to discover others. Both of them use this word, so emphasized by modern philosophers and scientists all the time. The enormous challenge of such an enterprise is, in my view, what makes Jesuits intellectual production so rich and interesting. In the case of oral tradition, although they refer to Indians, it is clear that they were not considering their own sermons, which held respect for the rhetoric in a time this was being discharged the written, and supposedly unchangeable written knowledge. The Jesuits initially traced many Indians errors to Satan, who they felt often worked through native shamans. As time wore on, however, the Jesuits increasingly found indigenous belief to be the result of human ignorance and error. See THWAITES, Reuben Gold, Ed.
