Regio III - Insula II - Tempio dei Fabri Navales (III,II,1-2)
The Temple of the Ship-Carpenters was built on top of a fullery. The fullery was excavated in the 1990's, but it had been identified earlier, in 1938-9. It consisted of two courtyards, one behind and one below the temple, surrounded by rooms. The building phases could be dated to the second half of the first and to the second century AD (opus mixtum). It stopped functioning when the temple was built, during the reign of Marcus Aurelius or Commodus. In the floor of the courtyard behind the temple are four very large basins, communicating with one another, and supplied with water through a lead pipe. The fullery contained at least fifty bowls: large pressing-bowls and smaller bowls in which detergents such as the creta fullonica (fuller's earth) were stored. On either side of the pressing-bowls were small walls (hand-rests). There were no bowls along the back wall, where masonry bases were found, used for beating cloth. In the centre of the back wall is a niche, which contained a statue of a deity. The later building is entered through a corridor between two shops. In front of the temple is a courtyard surrounded by a portico with brick piers. The portico near the entrance is extra wide, and supported by two additional piers. Here were found a black-and-white mosaic with geometrical motifs and a ship (much damaged), and inscriptions referring to the guild of the

and his post-calculus geometry
Fabri, by the way, spoke of another of Galileo's problems, the motion of the earth around the sun. He stated his opinion that the Catholic Church would adopt a figurative meaning to the offending biblical passages if it was shown that the earth does indeed move around the sun, His observations, however, came at an awkward time. Apparently something different was expected of Fabri since he belonged to the Holy Office. The TRS quotes him and then comments on his courageous statements concerning the movement of the earth. It hath been more than once asked whether they had a demonstration for asserting the motion of the Earth? They durst never yet affirm they had; wherefore nothing hinders but that the Church may understand those scripture-places, that speak of this matter in a literal sense, and declare they should be so understood as long as the contrary is not evinced by any demonstration; which, if perhaps it should be found out by you (which I can hardly believe it will) in this case the Church will not at all scruple to declare, that these places are to be understood in a figurative and improper sense." Whence this Author concludes, that the said Jesuit [Fabri] assuring us that the inquisition hath not absolutely declared, that those Scripture places are to be understood literally, seeing that the Church may make a contrary declaration, no man ought to scruple to follow the Hypothesis of the Earth's motion, but only forbear to maintain it in public, till the prohibition be called in.

This book concerns 202 Jesuit scholars, scientists, artists, explorers and saints who impacted history during the first two and a half centuries of Jesuit history. One of the most famous scholar was Christopher Clavius , the mathematician (after whom is named The Clavius Mathematical Research Group ) who urged the formation of a group to provide mutual support and inspiration for (Jesuit and lay) members to keep abreast of the latest mathematical developments. "Let an academy be formed for the advancement of mathematics"

In 1646 Fabri went to Rome where he met Ricci . He joined the Penitentiary College being involved with the Inquisition. He was unable to avoid religious problems himself and he was accused of believing the philosophy of Descartes . After spending a year back in France in 1668/69 he returned to Rome and was put in prison. Through Ricci he had made the acquaintance of Grand Duke Leopold II and the Grand Duke saw that Fabri was released fairly soon from prison. Fabri worked on astronomy, physics and mathematics. He studied Saturn's rings in 1660, a topic on which he became involved in a dispute with Huygens which ran for five years. He also discovered the Andromeda nebula. Fabri developed a theory of tides which was based on the action of the moon. He also studied magnetism, optics and calculus. In calculus he was closer to Newton than to Cavalieri and his notation was cumbersome. His work on the calculus appeared in his major mathematical publication

FABRI, Honoré Lyon, Christophe Fourni, 1665 4to (227 x 178 mm), pp [iv] 218 [recte 228] [16], with engraved device on title and numerous woodcut illustrations and diagrams in text; some light marginal waterstaining and some slight browning throughout, upper corner of preliminary leaves frayed, a good copy in contemporary vellum, spine ornamented in gilt and with lettering-piece, spine worn. £6500
First edition of Fabri's work on the Copernican theory, followed by a theory of tidal action based on the influence of the moon, and his investigations on capillarity.
'The foci of Fabri's tremendous activity were almost all urgent questions of the science of his day: heliocentrism, Saturn's rings, the theory of the tides, magnetism, optics, and kinematics. In mathematics, infinitesimal methods and the continuum problem were most prominent' (DSB).
Fabri believed that heliocentricity had not been conclusively proven, but if such a proof were to be found the Church should accept the findings. It is remarkable that at this date, after the condemnation of Galileo, a senior father of the Church should publish the arguments in favour of the Copernican hypothesis with such intellectual and scientific honesty.
Fabri (1606-1688) 'mathematician and physicist, was born near Belley, France, educated at the Collège de la Trinité in Lyons, and ordained a Jesuit priest in 1635. He taught metaphysics, astronomy, mathematics, and natural philosophy at the Collège from 1640 until 1646, then was transferred to Rome as a member of the Penitentiary College (the Inquisition), remaining there for the rest of his life. Fabri engaged in research and controversy on a wide range of scientific issues, including heliocentrism, the explanation of tides, and the circulation of the blood (he discovered the latter, independently of Harvey, about 1636); his writings on light and colors contributed to the science of optics' (Albert et al, Source book of ophthalmology p 100).

First edition of Borelli's account of the eruption of Etna, one of the earliest scientific treatments of volcanology; there is also an appendix defending his De vi percussionis from the criticisms of Honoré Fabri. 'In 1669 there occurred a major eruption of Etna and Borelli took the occasion to observe it closely, making notes on the topography of the mountain, the locations of the flows, and the nature of the various materials ejected, and offering some reasoned speculations of the sources of the heat powering the display' (DSB).
Borelli (1608-1679) was primarily a mathematician, and one of the most distinguished pupils of Galileo.
