Evans Crescent Precinct, Griffith (1939-40)
Background
The Evans Crescent Housing precinct in Griffith was designed by husband and wife architects Malcolm Moir and Heather Sutherland in 1939 and 1940. The houses are an example of the inter-war functionalist style with their asymmetrical cubic massing, roofs concealed by parapets, metal framed corner and ribbon windows and cantilevered balconies and hoods. The houses in the precinct are among the first truly modern designs in Canberra and represent a major architectural urban form designed by the same architects, in the same style over a two year period.
Significance
The Evans Crescent Housing precinct, Griffith, is listed on the ACT Chapter of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects Register of Significant Twentieth Century Architecture. The precinct is regarded by the RAIA as an excellent example of the inter-war functionalist style and the only example in Canberra of a coherent group of residences in this style. Malcolm Moir is recognised as one of Canberra's leading architects of the middle period of the twentieth century.

Demolished and under threat
Have Canberra's modernist houses been protected?
It is difficult to argue that Canberra's modernist architecture, particularly early examples, has been afforded high levels of protection. A number of Canberra's important mid-twentieth century houses and buildings have been extensively modified or demolished. Among those that have suffered most are the inter-war functionalist style houses and buildings from the 1930s. Examples of functionalist architecture in Canberra were never large in number to begin with: the ideas of mainstream modernism were relatively slow to reach Australia and Canberra experienced limited growth prior to 1960. Two of Canberra's most notable inter-war functionalist buildings are the Forrest Fire Station and precinct designed by Government architects Edwin Henderson and Cuthbert Whitley in 1938 and the Civic Theatre in Braddon, designed by Malcolm Moir in 1935. The Forrest Fire Station precinct remains and is included in the ACT Heritage Places Register . However, the Civic Theatre was demolished in the early 1970's.

M.G.Evans (Pop)
Morris Griffith Evans or 'Pop' as he was affectionately called by most of the Ysgol Ardudwy pupils was our headmaster in the years that I attended school from 1960-1967. When my father speaks of 'Pop' he sighs and reminisces at how 'good' a teacher/headmaster 'Pop' was and just how much everyone liked him. I felt the same way. I always looked forward to one of 'Pop's' lessons. We both agree that he was an amazing teacher and whenever I took classes with him he had my complete attention because he was so interesting and informative. He had an enthusiasm that was contagious. He taught me mathematics and History of Science and I enjoyed every minute. There were times when I regretted that he was the headmaster because it meant that he had less time for teaching. 'Pop' had two daughters who were at Ysgol Ardudwy when I was there - Mair and Gwen. Gwen and I were in the same classroom for most of the seven years I was at Ysgol Ardudwy and we played opposite each other in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. Gwen played 'Titania the Fairy Queen' and I played 'Bottom the weaver'. Gwen, I don't think I'll ever forget it! Gwen, who now lives in France with her husband Alan was kind enough to send me the following words about her father:

Gwynedd Friends Meeting Historical Notes Descendants of Ievan known as Evan Robert Lewis The Evans family of Gwynedd, Pennsylvania Generations: Introduction from H.M. Jenkins (1897) It is intended to present, here, systematically, all the ascertained facts concerning Thomas, Robert, Owen, and Cadwallader Evans, of Gwynedd, and their descendants. The details given are by no means complete: some of the branches of the family could not be traced beyond the early generations; and in some cases information asked for was not furnished; yet the mass of facts given is extensive, and may serve as the basis for fuller work by any one who is particularly interested in the family. The origin of the Evans family, in Wales, is indicated by notes given on a following page by the late Mrs. William Parker Foulke, the ancestress of her husband having been the daughter of Robert Evans. Her facts are drawn from a very elaborate family document prepared by the late Rowland E. Evans, son of Cadwalader of Philadelphia. It traces the descent of the four brothers of Gwynedd back to Mervyn Vrych, King of Man, who was killed in battle with the King of Mercia, A.D. 843. Mervyn married Essylt, daughter and sole heiress of Conan Tyndaethwy, King of Wales (who d. 818 or 820.) Both Mervyn and Essylt traced their descent from Lludd, King of Britain, brother of Caswallon, the chief who resisted the invasion of Caesar, before the Christian era. Passing over, however, a number of intermediate generations, from Mervyn Vrych, the following may be noted:

Introduction
Silas Evans listed 82 people in his list of Welsh astronomers in Chapter 24, Seryddiaeth yng Nghymru , of his book Seryddiaeth a Seryddwyr (published by William Lewis Ltd., Cardiff, 1923). There is, naturally, a strong emphasis on amateur astronomers of the time of the book, but the list covers the entire period from the 16th century. The list of Welsh astronomers is presented here. Information such as dates of birth/death and main places of residence are given alongside the names: sometimes this information is taken from Seryddiaeth a Seryddwyr , sometimes it is additional.
Alphabetical order
The list of names in alphabetical order is:
