CALL through the eyes of teachers and learners of Asian languages: Panacea or business as usual?
Marilyn McMeniman and Robyn Evans
Griffith University
Introduction
Despite the unprecedented support over the last two decades for Australians to learn a second language, many teachers and others remain somewhat cynical about the relatively low proficiency levels reached by school and university graduates. These levels, argue the critics, are insufficient to have any real impact on Australia's economic performance or the students' own employment prospects and significant personal growth. The oft- cited example of the recent request to allow 2,000 Japanese tourist guides to work in Australia because of inadequately proficient and culturally-aware Australians is a case in point. Although Griffith University is the happy recipient of a new state-of-the-art high technology language teaching building, many of the teachers themselves (and their 1,400 students of Japanese, Italian, Mandarin, Korean, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Indonesian) were unskilled in CALL. This situation is not uncommon. Pilus (1995), for example, found that ESL teachers in a Malaysian University were in need of both technical training and assistance in ways of integrating CALL into their teaching before the exciting potential of the technology could be realised. In the Griffith study, the first challenge was to harness the capacity of the facilities (including two multimedia studios, video-conferencing, satellite reception with three dishes, self-access CALL studio for students, electronic mail to other countries, and technically superior classrooms) by providing professional development for the teachers.

Barry Match Facts

Notes: Barry have used a total of 40 players in European competitions since 1994. Richard Jones is the only player to play for the same club in three different European competitions. He is also the only remaining member of the 1994 squad which played in the European Cup Winners' Cup. Tony Bird, Terry Evans and Chris Pike have also played in three different European competitions, but all three made their Cup Winners' Cup bow with local rivals, Cardiff City. Barry have had three players sent off in European competitions - one in each competition! Top of Page BARRY MATCH FACTS
