Euler, Leonhard Svájcban, Baselben született. Matematika mellett teológiát, orvostudományt és keleti nyelveket tanult. Bázelben a híres Bernoulli matematikus család támogatta. 1725-ben a Bernouli fivérekkel együtt Szentpétervárra ment, és itt dolgozott 1741-ig. Itt ugyan az élettani tanszéken kapott állást, de módot talált arra, hogy a fiziológia mellett fizikával és fõleg matematikával is foglalkozzon. Még csak 28 éves volt, amikor látászavarai 1735-ben megkezdõdtek. Egyik szemére ekkor meg is vakult. Euler csak ennyit mondott: "Most majd kevesebbet háborgatnak." 1741-ben elfogadta a berlini akadémia hívását, és az akadémia alelnökeként, valamint a matematikai osztály vezetõjeként Berlinben dolgozott 1766-ig. Ekkor Katalin cárnõ meghívására családjával együtt Szentpétervárra költözött. Ekkor 59 éves korában az ép szemén hályog képzõdött. Romló szemét becsukva gyakorolt és készült a teljes vakságra, ami pár hét múlva be is következett. 1776-ban ugyan mûtéttel eltávolították a hályogot, és egy pár napig úgy tûnt, visszanyeri a látását, de a seb elfertõzõdött, és Euler visszazuhant a fizikai sötétségbe. Ennek ellenére Euler egészen halála napjáig ontotta a ragyogó matematikai eredményeket. 16 évi vakság után 1783-ban az oroszországi Szentpétervárott halt meg szélütés következtében. Euler kétszer nõsült és 13 gyermeke született. Euler a fizikában is kiváló volt. Könyvet írt a hidraulikáról, hajótervezésrõl, tüzérségrõl. Sõt, könyvet írt a zenérõl is, amelyrõl ugyan a zenészek azt tartják, hogy túl matematikai, a matematikusok szerint pedig, hogy túl zenei. Ezt akár dicséretként is felfoghatjuk.

Leonhard Euler Descartes und Leibniz auseinander. 1766 kehrte er mit seiner Frau und seinen 13 Kindern nach Sankt Petersburg zurück. Obwohl er 1771 total erblindete, setzte er mithilfe seines Sohnes seine außergewöhnlich produktive Tätigkeit fort. Er diktierte einem Mitarbeiter, der mathematisch nicht vorgebildet war, seine "Vollständige Anleitung zur Algebra". Erst wenn dieser Mann alles verstanden hatte, war für Euler der Beweis erbracht, ein verständliches Lehrbuch geschrieben zu haben. Die Algebra definierte er übrigens als die Wissenschaft, aus bekannten Größen unbekannte zu berechnen (Gleichungslehre). Zum Schluss das berühmte Eulersche Brückenproblem: Gibt es einen Weg über die sieben Brücken des Flusses Pregel in Königsberg, wenn jede Brücke genau einmal benutzt werden darf? Die Antwort: Es gibt keinen solchen Weg. Der Grund: In alle Gebiete A, B, C und D führt eine ungerade Anzahl von Brücken.

Er besuchte das Gymnasium in Basel und nahm gleichzeitig Privatunterricht beim Mathematiker Johannes Burckhardt. Ab 1720 studierte er an der Universität Basel und hörte hier Vorlesungen von Johann Bernoulli. 1723 erlangte er durch den Vergleich der Newtonschen und Kartesischen Philosophie in lateinischer Sprache die Magisterwürde. Seinen Plan, auch Theologie zu studieren, gab er 1725 auf. Am 17. Mai 1727 berief ihn Daniel Bernoulli an die Akademie St. Petersburg . Hier traf er auf Christian Goldbach. 1730 erhielt Euler die Professur für Physik und schließlich 1733 als Nachfolger von Daniel Bernoulli die Professur für Mathematik. 1741 bis 1766 holte ihn Friedrich der Große an die Berliner Akademie. Euler korrespondierte und verglich seine Theorien mit Christian Goldbach aus Königsberg (auch Kaliningrad). Nach 25 Jahren in Berlin kehrte er zurück nach St. Petersburg

Leonhard Euler Biography Material prepared by Simon Patterson Leonhard Euler was one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. His numerous works (over 900 publications) in many areas had a decisive influence on the development of mathematics, an influence that is felt to this day. Euler was born in Switzerland, in the town of Basel, on the 15th of April 1707, in the family of a pastor. At that time, Basel was one of the main centres of mathematics in Europe. At the age of 7, Euler started school while his father hired a private mathematics tutor for him. At 13, Euler was already attending lectures at the local university, and in 1723 gained his masters degree, with a dissertation comparing the natural philosophy systems of Newton and Descartes. On his father's wishes, Euler furthered his education by enrolling in the theological faculty, but devoted all his spare time to studying mathematics. He wrote two articles on reverse trajectory which were highly valued by his teacher Bernoulli. In 1727 Euler applied for a position as physics professor at Basel university, but was turned down. At this time a new centre of science had appeared in Europe - the Petersburg Academy of Sciences. As Russia had few scientists of its own, many foreigners were invited to work at this centre - among them Euler. On the 24th of May 1727 Euler arrived in Petersburg. His great talents were soon recognised. Among the areas he worked in include his theory of the production of the human voice, the theory of sound and music, the mechanics of vision, and his work on telescopic and microscopic perception. On the basis of this last work, not published until 1779, the construction of telescopes and microscopes was made possible.
