Euclid of Alexandria Born around 325 BC and died about 265 BC in Alexandria, Egypt. This is the most usually presented idea - that Euclid was an ordinary mathematician/scholar, who simply lived in Alexandria and wrote his Elements - a book which was as popular as Bible until the 19th century. The real identity of Euclid is however not certain at all. The situation is best summed up by a historian of mathematics, Itard, who gave three possible hypotheses with regard to Euclid's identity:
  • That Euclid was a historical character, known as Euclid of Alexandria, born about 325 BC and died about 265 BC in Alexandria, Egypt, who wrote the Elements and the other works attributed to him. That Euclid was the leader of a team of mathematicians working at Alexandria around 300 BC, who all contributed to writing The Elements, even continuing to write after Euclid's death. That Euclid was not a historical character and that The Elements were written by a team of mathematicians at Alexandria who took the name Euclid from the historical character of Euclid of Megara who had lived about 400 BC.
Euclid's achievement was so great that even in the Middle Ages, when mathematics was all but forgotten, and only handful of copies were preserved by the Arab mathematicians and later translated to Latin and even later to vernacular languages, myths were circulating among the masons and builders in England.

Ivars Peterson Earlier this year, the journal published a list of the top 10 algorithms of the century (see http://computer.org/cise/articles/Top_Algorithms.htm "Computational algorithms are probably as old as civilization," Francis Sullivan of the Institute for Defense Analyses' Center for Computing Sciences in Bowie, Md. noted in an editorial in the January/February issue of CISE . Ancient tablets bearing Sumerian cuneiform, for example, feature descriptions of procedures for reckoning in base 60. "Algorithms have advanced in startling and unexpected ways in the 20th century," Sullivan continued. "The algorithms we chose. . .have been essential for progress in communications, health care, manufacturing, economics, weather prediction, defense, and fundamental science. Conversely, progress in these areas has stimulated the search for ever-better algorithms." Many of the selections are now familiar, finely tuned, heavily used tools. The Metropolis algorithm for Monte Carlo methods, the simplex method in linear programming, the Fast Fourier Transform for analyzing and manipulating digital data, and the Quicksort algorithm fit into this category.

Ivars Peterson It seems an unlikely pairing. One was the most prominent mathematician of antiquity, best known for his treatise on geometry, the Elements . The other was the most prolific mathematician in history, the man whom his eighteenth-century contemporaries called "analysis incarnate." Together, Euclid of Alexandria ( c c BC ) and Leonard Euler (1707–1783), born in Switzerland and at various times resident in St. Petersburg and Berlin, collaborated on proving an interesting result in number theory—without the benefit of e-mail or time travel. Mathematician William Dunham describes this remarkable effort, which spanned nearly 20 centuries, in his book Euler: The Master of Us All The story begins with the fascination that numbers held for the followers of Pythagoras in ancient Greece. Among those of special interest were the perfect numbers, which have the property that their proper divisors add up to the number itself. For example, the proper divisors of 6 are 1, 2, and 3, and 1 + 2 + 3 = 6. Six is the smallest perfect number. The next highest is 28. Its divisors are 1, 2, 4, 7, and 14, so 1 + 2 + 4 + 7 + 14 = 28. Euclid also knew the next two perfect numbers: 496 and 8,128. Notice that each of the four numbers can be written as the following products: 2 x 3, 4 x 7, 16 x 31, and 64 x 127.

Seleucus I Nicator, ruler of the vast Eastern parts of Alexander's Empire (modern Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan) founds the city of Antioch as his capital. Like Antigonus before him, Seleucus would be drawn by the dream of re-establishing Alexander's Empire, taking Syria and Cilicia in 296 BCE, and finally defeating and killing Lysimachos at Korupedion in 281 BCE, thus extending the Seleucid Kingdom throughout most of Asia Minor as well. With domination almost within his grasp, he would be murdered by a subordinate, Ptolemy Keraunos.

These are my personal rankings, but most of the selections should have wide acceptance among mathematical historians. If the criteria were just depth and historical importance then the greats Georg Cantor (1845-1918), and (1811-1832) would be urging their names on to this list, but these are lacking somewhat in breadth , compared with the Top Ten, who each were outstanding in multiple fields. Most of the selections were easy, but choosing Riemann, Euclid and Leibniz to round out the list was difficult. Riemann was undoubtedly an outstanding genius, but several great mathematicians might be better choices based on their work's historical importance, for example (1596-1650) or Joseph-Louis Lagrange (1736-1813). Conversely Euclid's work has great historical significance, but much of it was probably borrowed from the more brilliant

Course Description
The course will be accessible to anyone with a prior exposure to some calculus. The readings will be in both original sources, e.g., Euclid, Aristotle, Newton, and secondary interpretive sources. The seminar will examine some of the primary sources in detail, so that the seminar participants can gain experience in first-hand close reading of complex technical material in a cooperative and mutually reinforcing environment. A final paper (~ 15 pages) will be required on some mathematical topic (broadly conceived), not necessarily related to one of the main themes in the seminar. For the midterm evaluation, there will be a short take home essay assignment (3-4 pages). Texts and Papers: There will be a course packet of the readings marked (*) available at York Copy. They believe that reality is in essence mathematical. Pythagoras noted that vibrating lyre strings with harmonious notes have lengths that are proportional by a whole number. The Pythagorean theorem proves by reasoning what the Babylonians figured out by measurement 1000 years earlier. Plato, after traveling to Italy and learning about the Pythagoreans, founds his Academy in Athens, and continues to develop the idea that reality must be expressible in mathematical terms. But Athens at that time has developed a notoriously misogynist culture. Unlike his role model Pythagoras, whose school developed many women mathematikoi , Plato does not allow women to participate.
