Born in Misson (near Sisteron), France, in 1895 he started to study mathematics at the École Normale Supérieure, graduating in 1898. Looking for some means of financial support while he completed his doctorate on quasi-periodic functions, he took a post at the Bordeaux Observatory, teaching some mathematics at the university.
During World War I, he worked on ballistics and developed a novel method for precisely locating enemy artillery. When a gun is fired, it initiates a spherical shock wave but the projectile also generates a conical wave. By using the sound of distant guns to compare the two waves, Escaglon was able to make accurate predictions of gun locations.
After the armistice, Escaglon became director of the Strasbourg Observatory and professor of astronomy at the university the following year. In 1929, he was appointed director of the Paris Observatory and of the International Time Bureau, and elected to the Bureau des Longitudes in 1932. In 1933, he initiated the talking clock telephone service in France. He was elected to the Académie des Sciences in 1939.
Serving as director of the Paris Observatory throughout World War II and the German occupation of Paris, he retired in 1944. He died in Eyrenville, France.

Allais and Esclangon light deviations by Vincent MORIN INTRODUCTION Maurice Allais is mainly known after his pendulum experiments, but he also experimented with optical sightings, and a small part of his 1997 book (l'anisotropie de l'espace Ed Cl©ment Juglar Paris 1997) is devoted to those experiments. In fact, in 1927, the french astronomer Ernest Esclangon already experimented in a similar direction, measuring vertical differences in north-east and north-west optical sightings. In both cases, Esclangon and Allais said there was some deviations periodic in time. Esclangon said there was a sidereal periodicity in his vertical differences, Allais said his horizontal north to south and south to north sightings had 24h and nearly 25h periods. At the time they were made, those measurements were very tedious (Allais experiments required measuring every 20 minutes 24h a day during one month). Today, with some adequate tecnical skills and affordable hardware, it is easy to set up a fully automated experiment where the deviations of a light beam are recorded continuously for months. Two experiments have been conducted until now. The first one was a first low cost trial to see if something interesting happened. The second experiment is a more refined version of the first experiment. In both cases, the light beam undoubtedly undergoes periodic deviations, which is not a surprise as we expect at least the diurnal temperature effect. But it seems that the behaviour is much stranger than the temperature effect would normally appear, and it seems equally probable that some non thermal process operates.

Earliest Known Uses of Some of the Words of Mathematics (Q)
Last revision: June 11, 2005 Q. E. D. Euclid (about 300 B. C.) concluded his proofs with hoper edei deiksai, which Medieval geometers translated as quod erat demonstrandum ("that which was to be proven"). According to Veronika Oberparleiter, the earliest known use in print of the phrase quod erat demonstrandum in a Euclid translation appears in the translation by Bartholemew Zamberti published in Venice in 1505. In Dialogues Concerning Two New Sciences (1638) in Latin Galileo used quod erat intentum, quod erat demonstrandum, quod erat probandum, quod erat ostendendum, quod erat faciendum, quod erat determinandum, and quod erat propositum. In 1665 Benedictus de Spinoza (1632-1677) wrote a treatise on ethics, Ethica More Geometrico Demonstrata, in which he proved various moral propositions in a geometric manner. He wrote the abbreviation Q. E. D., as a seal upon his proof of each ethical proposition. Isaac Barrow used quod erat demonstrandum, quod erat faciendum (Q. E. F.), quod fieri nequit (Q. F. N.), and quod est absurdum (Q. E. A.). Isaac Newton used the abbreviation Q. E. D.

How many times have you leafed through dozens of issues of because you are certain that there was an article about some astronomer in it? This index should save you some time, but it is not intended to be an all-encompassing document. I first began working on it from my own issues (Sep. 1965 onward) in order to fill out the name index for a book. I was primarily interested in references to articles that listed birth and death dates. When I went back to complete the index back to Vol. 1, No. 1, I decided to include information of a more general nature. Of course it is not possible (or necessary) to include all the references to astronomers such as Galileo, Kepler, or even Henry Norris Russell, but how else are you going to find a reference to Dr. G. Waltemath or to the astronomical pirate, Basil Ringrose? As a great deal of biographical information is contained in the column "Astronomical Scrapbook," I give in the
