Escher was a Dutch graphic artist, most recognized for spatial illusions, impossible buildings, repeating geometric patterns (tessellations), and his incredible techniques in woodcutting and lithography. He was born June 1898 and died March 1972. His work continues to fascinate both young and old across a broad spectrum of interests. He was a man studied and greatly appreciated by respected mathematicians, scientists and crystallographers yet he had no formal training in math or science. He was a humble man who considered himself neither an artist or mathematician. Intricate repeating patterns, mathematically complex structures, spatial perspectives all require a "second look". Maurits Cornelis Escher - High and Low lithograph, 1947 50.5 x 20.5 cm What You can see on the main page is a cropped version of the lithograph by Dutch artist MC Escher . What I wanted to accomplish was to make it visible as a masterpiece of beautiful drawing and construction, and take away the focus from the (to most people) more Escher-like surrealism shown at the complete piece of art, displayed on this page. The lithograph is called "High and Low" in English, "Boven en Onder" in Dutch and "Oben und Unten" in German. As an additional thought I mirrored the pics on the main page, so one can have a clue what Escher was looking at when he etched the picture over 50 years ago. Please note that I am by no means an expert on Escher or just art in general - I'm just a fan, trying to get a different view. back to main index

Their strengths rely upon various assumptions in which humans perceive optical phenomena There are several classic optical illusions. One is an alternating figure variously called a magic cube or a Necker cube (Louis Necker, a Swiss crystallographer, first published his analysis of this design in 1832): the wireframe cube in the center below. Which of its sides is nearest to you? Is it the one made solidly green on the cube to the left or is it the green side on the cube to the right, or is there no nearest side at all?
