Maurits Cornelis Escher
Dutch graphic artist (1898-1972) - One of my favorites, capturing many aspects of the 'impossible' in his works. His art can be roughly divided in: the landscape and the mathematical epochs. The first accounted for beautiful pictures of south italian landscapes, on woodcut and other techniques. The second (and that lasted until his death) was a time of experimeting with new notions of space and topology. This brought him together to many great mathematicians of his time, and his work sometimes was the only palpable thing they have to show what their work was about. His most famous pictures are those of the metamorphosis and the impossible. The first ones put in a single frame a complete "morphing" without any jump from one transformation to the other. The others depict impossible things, that could never happen. Like a ever climbing stair, a closed waterfall (on wich the water runs up all the time) and others. Many of his works in the last phase show different topologies and is considered by many the inspiration for fractal geometry. Some links to his images:

Escher Website Maurits Cornelis Escher: la ilimitada repetición de lo mismo (in Spanish) "After Escher had said goodbye to the south [in 1936], his work took a direction that was eventually to lead to his becoming famous. From now on he was no longer concerned with expressing his observations - or only rarely - but rather with the construction of the images in his own mind. These images dealt with the regular division of the plane , limitless space, rings and spirals in space, mirror images, inversion, polyhedrons, relativities , the conflict between the flat and the spatial , and impossible constructions . Even in his Haarlem period, and occasionally during his years in Italy, he had made hesitant moves in this direction, but only now did they take shape systematically and start to absorb him. He had the feeling that until then he had merely been doing finger exercises.

"Good cannot exist without evil, and if one accepts the notion of God then, on the other hand, one must postulate a devil likewise. This is balance. This duality is my life... [I]t really is very simple: white and black, day and night - the graphic artist lives on these."M.C. Escher. Maurits Cornelius Escher was born in Leeuwarden, the youngest son of a hydraulic engineer. He showed talent from an early age and went to study at the Technical School of Art in Haarlem from 1919 to 1922. His early work consisted mainly of Italian inspired landscapes and towns, but he began to experiment with patterns of repeated images while still young. The bulk of his work up until 1937, however, was mainly focused on architecture though paying particular attention to matters of space and perspective. By the early Forties Escher's work was becoming progressively more complex. He utilised sophisticated mathematical principles with which to plan his mind-bending images. From 1944 onwards Escher's work became increasingly Surrealist, with his numerous optical illusions. Some his most famous works include 'Day and Night' (1938), 'House of Stairs' (1951) and 'Relativity' (1953). In his pictures, one is never sure where one should look first. Escher seems to be sending the viewer's eye on a wild goose chase as one looks for a start and end point to his images, only to be bombarded with an infinite set of possibilities. His fascination is with mirror images and geometrical questions. How far can he twist logic and still present a semblance of reality?

», on me répond : « Daniel ? »... alors qu'Escher est l'un des plus grands gourous culturels des informaticiens (il est tout de même présent dans l'Encyclopaedia Britannica). M.C.Escher homepage people directory M.C.Escher The Dutch graphic artist Maurits Cornelius Escher , b. June 17, 1898, d. Mar. 27, 1972, explored a strange world of optical illusion, visual puns, and distorted perspectives in his work. He dealt with the theme of metamorphosis and change in such prints as Verbum (1942) and Metamorphosis (1939-40), which portray a gradual transformation of one shape into another. Escher created a visual paradox in the lithograph Relativity (1953) by combining three separate perspectives into a unified, coherent whole. His work has become increasingly popular because of its unique combination of humor, logic, and meticulous precision with visual trickery. Bibliography:

M.C. Escher Brief Biography
This biography is condensed mostly from the biography written by Bruno Ernst for the book M.C. Escher - His Life and Complete Graphic Work This biography is about 90% complete.
Early Life
Maurits Cornelis (M.C.) Escher was born on June 17, 1898, in the Dutch province of Friesland . His parents, George Arnold Escher and Sarah Gleichman Escher, had three sons of which Maurits (called Mauk for short) was the youngest. His father, George, was a civil engineer. The Escher family was living in Leeuwarden in 1898, where George served as Chief Engineer for a government bureau. The family lived in a grand house named "Princessehof," which would later become a museum and host exhibitions of M.C. Escher's works. Young M.C. Escher moved with his family to Arnhem. He attended elementary and secondary school there, and also in the seaside town of Zandvoort, where he lived for a while to improve his health. In 1907, he started learning carpentry and piano. In secondary school, his marks were poor except in drawing. His art teacher took and interest in his drawing talent, and taught him to make linocuts. He failed his final exam and thus never officially graduated. In 1913, M.C. Escher met his lifelong friend Bas Kist in religious school (which he attended at his parent's direction, even though he wasn't very religious). Kist was also interested in printing techniques, and may have encouraged M.C. to make his first linoleum cut works. Amoung these early works is a portrait of his father which is the oldest surviving work by the artist. In 1917, the two friends visited the artist Gert Stegeman, who had a printing press in his studio. Some of M.C.'s work from this year were apparently printed at Stegeman's.

  • Born: 17 June 1898 Birthplace: Leeuwarden, Netherlands Died: 27 March 1972 Best Known As: Mind-bending artist of "Hand With Reflecting Sphere"
Name at birth: Maurits Cornelis Escher Escher's mind-bending prints and drawings playfully explore perspective, mirror images and physical space. Two of his best-known prints, "Relativity" (1953) and "Ascending and Descending" (1960), feature staircases which seem to defy gravity and run in impossible directions. His most popular work may be "Hand With Reflecting Sphere" (1935), an image of himself as seen in a globe held in his outstretched hand. Escher also is known for his tessellations mosaics of repetitive designs in which positive and negative images interconnect and sometimes blend into one another. Though Escher was not trained in math, his work has been embraced by mathematicians who see his drawings as artistic depictions of geometric principles. FOUR GOOD LINKS
