    Erlang C

VC '97 (in Dutch) This book contains the courseware of the 51st annual course for mathematics teachers, this time dealing with statistics and probability
The first lecture by I.H. Stamhuis outlines the development of statistics from a purely verbal, qualitative discipline to modern statistics (descriptive statistics and mathematical statistics). Ms. Stamhuis lets her story start in the early nineteenth century with the person of Adriaan Kluit (the first Dutch professor in statistics) and continues until the early twentieth century with Galton and Pearson.
W. Kleijne describes the earliest beginnings of probability theory, i.e. the work of Christiaan Huygens ( De Ratiociniis in Ludo Aleae , 1657), translated in 1660 by him into Dutch as Van Rekeningh in Spelen van Geluck . It analyses the discussions on dice and hazard games. Also at the same time, the rise of the actuarial mathematics is described.
A.G.M. Steerneman in a way continues Stamhuis ' lecture. His aim is a more precise definition of the concept of estimation. According to his lecture, the essence of statistics is drawing conclusions from incomplete and inaccurate observations and approximating the level of confidence of the result.

Call Center Consolidation - Does It Still Make Sense? By Ike Mitchell
Principal, Computer Sciences Corporation One of the surest ways for a call center operator to achieve improvements in both service quality and cost performance is to take advantage of economies of scale. To gain these efficiencies, fewer, larger agent groups are often better than having many small agent groups; operating larger centers is often better than operating many small centers. In the past, there have been practical limits to how large an agent group or center could grow. Issues like training, database access and the size of the labor pool constrained the efficiencies that could be gained through scale. Physical limitations remain but, increasingly, new technologies and old business practices can enable enterprises to consolidate groups into larger "virtual" centers. Indeed, such "virtual" consolidation has been the trend in recent years. The tragedy of September 11 demonstrates the need for disaster recovery and redundancy, and for greater physical distribution of facilities. But the idea of consolidating centers and operations doesn't always run counter to this trend. In fact, some of the technologies and business processes discussed below enable call centers to become truly "virtual" rather than just physically distributed. Moreover, the renewed emphasis on disaster recovery is only one of many factors to be considered in an overall economic analysis. The slowing economy demands that customer contact be managed from a cost/performance point of view, and increased competition demands improved service performance. Consolidation, logically and physically, can achieve these seemingly incompatible goals.

Eponyms An eponym is a word derived from the name of a real, fictional, mythical or spurious character or person. Most eponyms originate from a person's surname: boycott , for instance, from the Irish landlord Captain Charles Cunningham Boycott; dahlia , from the Swedish botanist Anders Dahl; the sousaphone , from the American bandmaster John Philip Sousa; and volt , from the Italian physicist Count Alessandro Volta. Many eponymous words come from literary, biblical or mythological sources: malapropism , from Mrs Malaprop in Sheridan's The Rivals Dickensian , from the English writer Charles Dickens; as old as Methuselah , from the age of the Old Testament patriarch; and aphrodisiac , from the Greek goddess of love and beauty Aphrodite. There are thousands of eponyms in everyday use in English today and study of them yields a fascinating insight into the rich heritage of the world's most popular language and its development. Here are some more examples of names that have been immortalised in such a way. A B C D ... W X Y Z A Aaron's beard/rod Aaron, brother of Moses

Erlang is a fully fledged programming language promoting concurrency oriented programming style. OTP is a framework on top of Erlang, developed in Erlang, which provides rules and skeleton-code supporting best practice. OTP also comes with many ready to use components. Erlang is highly declarative in its nature and therefore provides short development-test-deployment cycles. Some of Erlang/OTP's major strength are:
  • In-language support for massive light-weight concurrency.

Recent studies show that calls average 45 seconds in queue prior to being answered by a call center service representative.* The Unity Call Center Group uses every means to assure that there will be the right number of people available to answer calls for every project. One such tool is the use of Erlang Tables for scientific scheduling. Agner Erlang developed his scientific mathematical tables for the use of the Copenhagen Telephone Company in 1917, and the theories still hold true today. Erlang is to Call Center Scheduling as Einstein is to the Theory of Relativity. In 1917 he developed his Erlang Tables - an accurate and concise set of calculations that show exactly the number of agents needed to answer phones within a given number of seconds. The use of modified Erlang tables enables Unity to price accurately and allows customers to have some control over cost by adjusting the parameters of the project. With three variables identified, Unity knows how many agents each customer will require.
