Introduction
Queueing theory (sometimes spelled queuing theory ) is the mathematical study of waiting lines (or queues ). There are several related processes, arriving at the back of the queue, waiting in the queue (essentially a storage process), and being served by the server at the front of the queue. It is applicable in transport and telecommunication . Mathematics of Lines: A Public Radio Commentary by Bill Hammack

I'm sure that this week you've been trapped in a slow moving line, likely for last minute gift shopping, or to return something. As an engineer, I have some good news for you about making those lines move faster. It comes from a branch of engineering called "queuing theory." It began in 1909 at the Copenhagen Telephone Company when an engineer there, Agner Krarup Erlang, figured out how to direct telephone calls to unused phone lines. This is exactly the same as a check out line. You showing up to check out is like a phone call arriving, and an available cashier is like an open telephone line. Here's what Erlang learned that is relevant to your life. To keep the lines moving it would seem that the store should just measure the number of people arriving in a typical hour and then assign enough cashiers so that usually everyone will be served quickly. Erlang showed that this was a recipe for checkout line gridlock. He learned that people are as likely to arrive at one time as another, but precisely when they arrive is random. This means that people will arrive in bunches, not spaced out evenly. So, if stores have just the right number of cashiers for the average number of shoppers in an hour, the store will, at times, have too few cashiers, resulting in long waits. The solution is to combine the separate lines into one huge line, and let that line feed to more than one cashier. You see this used at airports and in banks. It works because there is a random chance you'll be behind someone who causes a delay: Someone, say, who needs a price check. If that delay happens when you're in a line for a single cashier you'll be delayed, but imagine if you were in that one line that fed, say, three cashiers. The only time you'd be delayed is when people in front of all three cashiers are delayed. This makes the single line about three times faster than having one line per cashier.

Erlang programming language Also see erlang , a unit of telephone traffic. Erlang is a programming language designed for developing robust systems of programs that can be distributed among different computers in a network. Named for the Danish mathematician Agner Krarup Erlang, the language was developed by the Ericsson Computer Sciences Lab to build software for its own telecommunication products. In use for a number of years at Ericsson and other companies, Erlang is taught in over 80 universities and colleges world-wide and is freely available as open source code. Erlang is similar to Java in that it uses a virtual machine and supports multithreading . However, whereas the Java development community focuses on Web applications, Erlang is aimed at the market for extremely robust servers and embedded systems. Erlang is described as a functional programming language, meaning that it emphasizes the evaluation of expressions rather than the execution of commands. The expressions use functions to derive basic values. (Two other well-known programming models are

Erlang was born at Lonborg (Lønborg), near Tarm, in Jutland. He was the son of a schoolmaster and with his maternal mathematical ancestor Thomas Fincke, he demonstrated his potential from an early age by being able to read books upside down. He passed the Preliminary Examination offered by the University of Copenhagen, with distinction, at age 14, after receiving dispensation to sit because he was younger than the usual minimum age.
For the next two years he taught alongside his father.
With a distant relative providing free board and lodgings, he prepared for and sat the University of Copenhagen entrance examination in 1896, which he passed with distinction. He won a scholarship to the University of Copenhagen and majored in mathematics, but also studied astronomy, physics and chemistry. He graduated in 1901 with an MA and subsequently taught at several schools over the next 7 years. He maintained his interest in mathematics and received an award for one paper that he submitted to the University of Copenhagen.
He was a member of the Danish Mathematicians' Association and through this met amateur mathematician Johan Jensen, the Chief Engineer of the Copenhagen Telephone Company, an offshoot of the International Bell Telephone Company. Erlang subsequently obtained employment with the company in 1908. He worked for the Copenhagen Telephone Company for almost 20 years, until his death in Copenhagen after an abdominal operation.

I NEED HELP. If you have made a long or an important contribution on the theory of queues, please send me some details so I can credit you. This page will be expanded as I get more information. If you have a good overview of the history of queueing theory, send me information, please. The history of queues goes back to primitive man. Below is an early queue which is described in the bible. Edward Hicks' "Noah's Ark" A.K. (Agner Krarup) Erlang published his first paper on queueing theory in 1909. Erlang was an Danish engineer who worked for the Copenhagen Telephone Exchange. A history of Erlang and an English translation of his work can be found in the scarce "The Life and Works of A.K. Erlang" by E. Brockmeyer, H.L. Halstorm and Arne Jensen. (1948) This "book" is actually "Transactions of the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences (ATS) 1948, No. 2. According to Jouni Karvo's PhD dissertation (2002), "Traffic intensity is dimensionless, but C.C.I.F. (Comit Consultatif International Telephonique, a predecessor of ITU-T and C.C.I.T.T.) decided in 1946 that Erlang is used as the traffic unit to honour A. K. Erlang's work." A good summary of the history of queueing theory up to 1961 can be found in Thomas Saaty's "Elements of Queueing Theory," 1961, pp. 20-25. This book has a bibliography of 910 items. Neuts' Matrix Geometric Solutions in Stochastic Models (1981) lists 315 bibliographic items, most subsequent to Saaty's list. Gross and Harris' Fundamentals of Queueing Theory (1998) lists 267 items, most subsequent to Neuts.

Q: What is a queue and what is queueing thory?
A: According to The American College Dictionary, a queue (as a noun) is (1) a braid of hair worn hanging down behind, (2) a file or line of persons, etc.
As a verb, "to queue" means to form a line while waiting for something.
The etymology is from the Latin coda, meaning tail.
QUEUEING THEORY is the mathematical study of waiting lines.
For a further discussion of queueing theory, go to "Definitions of Queueing Theory"
Q: What is the proper spelling "queueing" or "queuing?"
A: They are both correct spellings. The vast majority of queueing theory researchers use "queueing." On the other hand, most American dictionaries and spell checkers prefer the spelling "queuing." The list of well known researchers who use "queueing" includes P. Brill, J.W. Cohen, R. Cooper, D.R. Cox, D. Gross, F. Haight, C. Harris, B. Hnedenko, L. Kleinrock, M. Neuts, E. Parzen, N. Prabhu, S. Ross, T. Saaty, L. Takacs, R. Wolff.
In addition, INFORMS, NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada), CORS (Canadian Operations Research Society), and the journal Queueing Systems: Theory and Applications, all use "queueing" in their publications.

It admits different interpretations according to punctuation and stress. 'Set the agenda' could be me advocating that we should do so. 'SET, the agenda' could be me proposing to expound what I think is or should be the agenda for SET - for Science, Engineering and Technology. Or, indeed, is it simply a tautology? Well. This is by no means the first time I've used a title redolent in ambiguity, equivocation or imperspicuity. My PhD submission, some few years ago now, had the academically erudite sounding - even perhaps pretentious - title of: Topics in Random Signal Theory . With the self confidence that comes with the passage of time I can now perhaps admit that more accurately it might have been: Random Topics in Signal Theory!

A career in science is like any other. You want to succeed. Thirty years ago, when I started out into the world with a well-earned degree in physics, I knew what I wanted. Like Indiana Jones, I thought the only things worth having were "fortune and glory". Unfortunately there was a snag. The opportunities for either fortune or glory in electrical properties of solid state organic materials were slender even on good days. In fact, the only real chance to impress the girls at the sort of cocktail parties I wasn't going to be invited to anyway was to win the Nobel prize or to have something named after you.
