Climate, Ecology, and Human Health
By Paul R. Epstein Epidemics are like sign-posts from which the statesman of stature can read that a disturbance has occurred in the development of his nationthat not even careless politics can overlook. Dr. Rudolf Virchow, 1848 There are many determinants of health and well-being, and they can all interact with one another. Human biological and psychological factors come into play on a personal level, but ecological and global systems are also involved, as are economics and access to health care, which determine the social vulnerabilities to disease. Recently, our chief means of controlling infectionsantibiotics and insecticides have themselves become a source of new, resistant microbes and disease carriers, and the growing number of people with malnutrition or depressed immune systems have helped select and disseminate these emerging organisms. Environmental conditions, interacting with the biology of disease agents, can exert profound effects. Changes in how land is used affect the distribution of disease carriers, such as rodents or insects, while climate influences their range, and affects the timing and intensity of outbreaks. In this review we examine how our health is influenced by the interplay of social conditions, local environmental factors, and global changes. The discussion focuses primarily on the environment, forgiven its scale and pace of changethis sometimes forgotten determinant seems destined to play an ever-increasing role in determining disease patterns in the future.

Posted by Ogged on 12.13.03 Sometimes it really is simple: this administration is full of bad people The Bush administration has removed from the public domain millions of pages of information on health, safety, and environmental matters, lowering a shroud of secrecy over many critical operations of the federal government. The Bush administration is denying access to auto and tire safety information, for instance, that manufacturers are required to provide under a new "early-warning system" created following the Ford-Firestone tire scandal four years ago. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, meanwhile, is more frequently withholding information that would allow the public to scrutinize its product safety findings and product recall actions. New administrative initiatives have effectively placed off limits critical health and safety information potentially affecting millions of Americans. The information includes data on quality and vulnerability of drinking-water supplies, potential chemical hazards in communities, and safety of airline travel and others forms of transportation.

Neuroscientist/Neurologist Eric Courchesne, Ph.D., is a professor of neuroscience at UC San Diego and director of the Center for Autism Research at the San Diego Children's Hospital. He is a leading researcher in the study of the neural basis of autism. Autism is a developmental brain disorder that affects the ability to communicate, form relationships, and respond appropriately to the environment. Autism can vary greatly in its severity, from mild social impairments to extreme retardation, bizarre behavior, and total withdrawal from the world. Some autistics develop "savant" abilities such as prodigious talents for mental arithmetic. Courchesne studies the brain wiring and genetic basis of autism, hoping to discover the causes of this mysterious disorder that afflicts one in 500 people.

Abstract:
Reactivation of latent herpes viruses (notably EpsteinBarr virus, human herpesvirus-6) is commonly seen in chronic fatigue syndrome and it is believed to contribute to symptom perpetuation. EpsteinBarr virus (EBV), which was first isolated by Epstein, Barr and Achong (1964) from a cultured Burkitt's lymphoma lymphoblast cell line, is the etiological agent for infectious mononucleosis (IM), polyclonal and oligoclonal lymphomas associated with primary and acquired immunodeficiencies, and the complications of X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome (XLP) (Cantani and Mastrantoni, 1989; Englund, 1988; Ernberg et al., 1990; Jones and Straus, 1987; Okano et al., 1988; Purtilo, 1987; Purtilo et al., 1981; Rowe et al., 1986; Saemundsen et al., 1981) and nasopharyngeal cancer (Pearson et al., 1984). Furthermore, people who have had IM have higher rates of subsequent development of malignant lymphoproliferative disorders (Abo et al., 1982; Snydman et al., 1982) and Hodgkin's disease (Green et al., 1979; Mueller, 1987; Poppema et al., 1985; Weiss et al., 1989), while patients with XLP have a higher incidence of non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphoma (Harrington et al., 1987).

NELOFER SYED, Technician Epstein-Barr virus is a human herpesvirus that infects most people in the world early in life and then persists life-long. Primary EBV infection that is delayed until adolescence or adulthood frequently causes infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever). Most carriers of EBV show no symptoms or pathology but in some circumstances EBV is associated with human cancers, the virus normally being present in all of the tumor cells of an EBV associated case. These cancers include lymphomas in immunosuppressed people (either as a result of medication after transplant surgery or AIDS), Hodgkin's disease, Burkitt's lymphoma in central Africa, nasopharyngeal carcinoma in South-East Asia and some gastric carcinomas. EBV infects human B lymphocytes and certain epithelial cells; infection of lymphocytes is readily accomplished in the laboratory and EBV drives the cells into a state of permanent proliferation. We are studying the mechanisms by which EBV causes human cells to grow, the role of the virus in human cancers and the regulation of the switch between latent persistence and virus replication. The virus proteins EBNA-1, EBNA-2, EBNA-3A, EBNA-3C, EBNA-LP and LMP-1 are required for EBV to cause permanent growth of human B lymphocytes and expression of the virus proten BZLF1 is the key switch from latency to the replicative cycle. The functions and mechanisms of action of these viral proteins comprise much of the EBV research at the Branch.
