Quantum theory and the Nobel prize
Feature: August 2002 Personal prejudices and a lack of understanding by the Nobel-prize committee left the pioneers of quantum mechanics unrewarded until the discovery of antimatter in 1932.
Prize and prejudices
In 1933 the Nobel prizes seemed of little importance compared with the global economic depression and the rise to power of the Nazis, but many physicists still kept a watchful eye on Stockholm. Their bewilderment and chagrin over the most recent decisions by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences had fuelled anticipation. No prize had been awarded in physics since 1930, yet recent theoretical and experimental achievements had led to a revolutionary new quantum-mechanical depiction of the atom. Would the Academy finally acknowledge these accomplishments? When the Academy eventually announced its decision in November, the results pleased some, angered others and puzzled many. The prize reserved from 1932 went to Werner Heisenberg alone for "the creation of quantum mechanics, the application of which has

    Preliminary program
Enclosed is a preliminary program of the 15th ICTT. The program is now nearly final. Some minor last minute changes may still occur. Each session starts with a plenary talk of 45 minutes (together with discussion) duration, followed by invited talks of 20 minutes each (again, including discussions). This is a tighter time shcedule than at most earlier conferences. It is due to the large number of papers submitted; a fact which we are very much pleased for. The morning sessions will start at 9.00 a.m. (except on Monday when we start at 8.30) and the afternoon ones at 14.00. There will be about 2 hrs break for lunch. There will be some evening programs, some are more of a recommendation than an organized joint meeting. There will be an excursion on Wednesday afternoon which is basically a track hiking (walking) in the woods outside Göteborg, bird watching etc. Those who want to follow need shoes suitable for outdoors walking. Please look up these programs under "evening programs". Registration Sunday 1 June 17.00 - 22.00
