In relation with the history of (A science (or group of related sciences) dealing with the logic of quantity and shape and arrangement) mathematics , the Italian school of (Click link for more info and facts about algebraic geometry) algebraic geometry refers to the work over half a century or more (flourishing roughly 1885-1935) done internationally in (Click link for more info and facts about birational geometry) birational geometry , particularly on (Click link for more info and facts about algebraic surface) algebraic surface s. There were in the region of 30 to 40 leading mathematicians who made major contributions; about half of those being in fact Italian. There is no question that the leadership fell to the group in (Capital and largest city of Italy; on the Tiber; seat of the Roman Catholic Church; formerly the capital of the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire) Rome of (Click link for more info and facts about Guido Castelnuovo) Guido Castelnuovo (Click link for more info and facts about Federigo Enriques) Federigo Enriques and (Click link for more info and facts about Francesco Severi) Francesco Severi ; who were involved in some of the deepest discoveries, as well as setting the style. The fashion and foundational attitude changed in algebraic geometry from 1950 onwards, leading to an axiomatisation and some acrimony as to the status of some results. For a while it may have seemed that the tradition of the Italian school would possibly be lost, in the sense that the old papers had become hard to read for the new generation of geometers. The essentials were in fact transmitted, in particular through

Enriques surfaces
An Enriques surface X is a smooth compact complex surface with irregularity q X and nontrivial canonical sheaf K X satisfying K X O X . Such surfaces have been studied first by the italian mathematician Federigo Enriques (1871-1946) in 1914. Enriques surfaces cannot be embedded into projective threespace P C . However there exist birational morphisms onto singular surfaces in P C . Such a singular surface is called a singular model of an Enriques surface. There is a well known family of such singular models, which has been constructed by Enriques himself. It is the family of surfaces degree 6 going doubly through the edges of a tetrahedron. Here we present a subfamily with tetrahedral symmetry. It is the two parameter family of surfaces X r c given by
X r c f r x x x x c x x x x x x x x x x x x
parameterized by the complex numbers r and c . The polynomial f r defines a sphere with radius r
f r r x x x x r x x x x x x x x x x x x
and the faces of the tetrahedron are just the planes defined by the linear forms x x x x . We give an overview how the surface X r c degenerates for real values of r and c . As an example, the following pictures exhibit the real affine part of

Jeremy Gray Jeremy Gray has worked at the Open University since 1975, and as a senior Lecturer since 1987. He has worked on a number of courses, including M 203 ‘Introduction to Pure Mathematics’, where he was closely associated with the Geometry Block, and the Topology course (M 435). He also maintains the MSc course in Differential Geometry (M 827). With John Fauvel, he was one of the two principal authors of ‘Topics in the History of Mathematics’ (MA 290) and edited the Source Book The History of Mathematics; a Reader Macmillan, London (1987). Research Activities Professional activities Comments Forthcoming articles ... Book reviews Research Activities As a member of the Centre of History of Mathematical Sciences Jeremy is interested in many branches of the history of mathematics, but his main areas of research are the history of algebraic geometry, complex function theory, Non-Euclidean geometry, and mathematical modernism in the 19 th and early 20 th Centuries. He is also interested in logic and the philosophy of mathematics and the life and work of Henri Poincaré. His interest in mathematical modernism is an attempt to link the history of mathematics with the history of science and issues in mathematical logic and the philosophy of mathematics. He believes strongly that the study of the history of mathematics is an important way for everyone to understand the nature of the mathematics we have, and its place and role in the intellectual and practical life of society.

PHILOSOPHY OF MATHEMATICS EDUCATION NEWSLETTER 9
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF HISTORY AND OF NON-ABSOLUTIST PHILOSOPHIES IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION
Franceso Speranza
University of Parma, Parma, Italy
Three problems about the role of history in education
  • Most scholars agree about the significance of history in education:. But how can we justify it and what kind of history is suitable?
  • Contrast Lakatos's (Kantian) aphorism:
"Philosophy of science without history of science is empty, history of science without philosophy of science is blind" (Lakatos 1971, p.102)
with Ernest’s critique: Lakatos did not sufficiently establish the legitimacy of bringing the history of mathematics into the heart of his philosophy of mathematics (Ernest 1991, p. 39).
  • Current research in mathematics education in many countries involves a perspective that takes into account of history and philosophies of mathematics. But what are the reasons for such a phenomenon? What is the meaning of the interconnections between philosophy, history and education? In the next section, I give my views on the possible role of history in the philosophy of mathematics - or more generally of science. However, first of all, we must identify what kind of philosophy of mathematics could have an intersection with history and education.

Cultura formativa e insegnamento matematico.
