Doesn't he deserve credit for formulating the principle of empiricism, too? April Though it can be disputed, most of modern sources credit Empedocles as the first to formulate the theory of four elements ( actually links here), which stayed the most popular (al)chemical theory for more than a thousand years. His fame as miracle worker and doctor was somewhat connected to the story of his successful action against the plague in Selinuntos, and an epidemic in Acragas (where he let a break be cut into the mountains, so that north winds could drive away unhealthy miasms from nearby marshes); he also established the Italian school of medicine, comparable to the schools of Kos and Knidos. As a note of minor interest, Empedocles theorized that the speed of light may be finite, though still too fast for us to notice the delay in its movement. He was exiled from Acragas after an aristocratic coup, and Diogenes Laertius relates two possible versions of his death: either he threw himself into Etna's crater (possibly to leave an impression of his ascent to heavens), or he died in Peloponnesos, as a refugee. Empedocles of Akragas (ca. 492-ca. 432 BC)

Greek philosopher who was a subscriber to the Pythagorean school of natural philosophers, but without the mysticism of his contemporaries. He felt that we must use the data from our senses, even though they could not be completely trusted. He believed the Moon shone by reflected light. He postulated that all substances were made up of air, earth, fire, and water combined in different proportions. He is the first to have suggested the humoral theory, later adopted by the Hippocratics . He also proposed a crude theory of evolution. Hippocrates of Cos Pythagoras

Rare Find of Pre-Socratic Writings
Alain Martin of Brussels University has claimed that a piece of papyrus, held at the University of Strasbourg since 1904, contains 70 lines of text by Empedocles (c.495-435 BC), the Sicilian philosopher who developed the idea that everything is made up of four elements earth, air, fire and water. If true, it will be a major find, as very few manuscripts by pre-Socratic philosophers survive. The papyrus is of Egyptian origin and has been dated to the 1st century BC. Although Empedocles is cited and quoted by other writers, including Aristotle, only two poems survive from his original writings, making the discovery especially important. Empedocles is credited with having founded modern medicine as well as prefiguring Darwin, in a poem which talks of survival of the fittest among competing amalgams of limbs and body parts. His greatest fame, however, is in the legend that he leapt into the volcanic crater of Mount Etna to prove his divinity. He did not survive to tell the tale. News release of 9/27/97. From

495-435 B.C. Look at the comments on this paper. Although Empedocles developed radically new ideas about the nature of the universe, most of his work is an extension of Parmenidean and Pythagorean philosophy. How does one account for the kaleidoscopic nature of the world if we maintain Parmenides' belief in a permanent, singular, and eternal universe? In the process of answering this question, Empedocles introduces new physical, chemical, and biological insights that influence later philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle.

Empedocles
In antiquity, Empedocles (ca. 495-435 BCE) was characterized as active on the democratic side in the politics of his native city of Acragas in Sicily, and as a physician, as well as a philosopher and poet. His philosophical and scientific theories are mentioned and discussed in several dialogues of Plato, and they figure prominently in Aristotle's writings on physics and biology and, as a result, also in the later Greek commentaries on Aristotle's works. Diogenes Laertius devotes one of his Lives of Eminent Philosophers to him (VIII, 51-77). His writings have come down to us mostly in the form of fragments preserved as quotations in the works of these and other ancient authors. Extensive fragments, some of them not previously known, were recently found preserved on a papyrus roll from Egypt in the Strasbourg University library (see Martin and Primavesi 1999). The numbering of the fragments in this article follows that of the Diels-Kranz edition; the translations are from Kirk, Raven, and Schofield 1983. Traditionally, Empedocles' writings were held to consist of two poems, in hexameter verse, entitled

Empedocles (c.490 BC - c.430 BC)
While we know nothing of his early life, we can probably assume that he was aware of the ideas of Pythagoras and Xenophanes, and possibly Parmenides. Like Pythagoras, Empedocles was believed to have travelled to Egypt and to have visited other contemporary Greek philosophers, such as Herodotus and Protagoras. With his father's money and his own ever-growing influence he began to adopt the trappings of power, wearing purple robes and employing scores of attendants. It would appear that Empedocles was a magician first and a philosopher only second. He left behind two poems, the source of most of our existing knowledge of him, one of which discussed his philosophy. A key fragment reads, 'Hear first the four roots of all things: Dazzling Zeus, life bearing Hera, Aidoneus, and Nestis who moistens the springs of mortals with her tears'. Zeus is commonly interpreted to be air, Hera to be earth, Aidoneus (Hades) as fire and Nestis (Persephone) as water. At the beginning of the world, Empedocles' four elements were all mixed in unity, and held together with 'love'. Most of Empedocles' miracles were of a medical nature, but some stories told of his magic; on one occasion he is reputed to have calmed a man seized by uncontrolled anger simply by reciting a verse of Homer. On another occasion the village of Selinus was afflicted with a plague, and he saved them by diverting two streams into their river to purify it. Following this miracle, he reportedly manifested himself to the villagers, who worshipped him, and he threw himself into the volcanic Mount Etna to prove his divinity.
