LUTHER PFAHLER EISENHART
January 13, 1876-October 28,1965
BY SOLOMON LEFSCHETZ
portrait with signature
"My parents, who were residents of York, Pennsylvania, had six sons, I being number two, born January 13, 1876. The only other survivor of the group is Martin Herbert, Chairman of the Board of the Bausch-Lomb Optical Company of Rochester. "My father, after being a student at the York County Academy, taught in a country school until, acting upon the slogan by Horace Greeley—'Go West young man'—he went to Marshall, Michigan, and worked in a store. At the same time, he was apprentice to a local dentist. Being very expert with his hands, he soon acquired competence in the technique of dentistry. In due time he returned to York, set up a dentist office, and was married. He made sufficient income to meet the expenses of his growing family, but his intellect was too active to be satisfied by dentistry. Electricity appealed to him and he organized the Edison Electric Light Company in the early eighties. The telephone also made an appeal. He experimented with telephones and in the late nineties organized the York Telephone Company. Both of these companies are very active today. "Mothers with such a large group of growing children would have felt that to provide for their well-being was enough. Not so with my mother. Not only did she do that to our satisfaction but she took part in our education before we went to school and helped in our 'home work.' In my case the result was that at the age of six years and five months I entered school and passed through the lower grades in three years instead of the normal six.

University to Remove Grad College Arch
Matthew Hersh
Sustaining serious structural damage after being hit by a tractor-trailer, Eisenhart Arch will be removed, repaired, and placed in a more safe location, according to Princeton University officials. The arch, which was built in 1951, marks the western approach to the Graduate College from Springdale Road. It has long stood as the gateway to the University's Graduate College. However, in recent years, as trucks have taken to driving on the narrow throughways that surround the area, it has been nicked and bumped as drivers have attempted to make the tight turn on to College Road. "It's not the first time it's been hit," said Pamela Hersh, director of the Department of Community and State Affairs. "However, it is the first time it has sustained significant structural damage." She said the University would remove the arch to "preserve its longevity" and would look for possible locations that may prove safer for the Gothic gateway. University officials said that the arch's current location is still a possibility, but cannot rule out alternate spots.

Accession No. Extent 3 in. Language English. Repository Center for American History,The University of Texas at Austin
Scope and Contents
Transcripts of oral history interviews with 43 individuals concerning their memories of mathematics at Princeton University during the 1930s. The interviews focus on the institutional and social context of the Princeton graduate program and the Institute for Advanced Study as they developed, as well as the personalities of the people involved. Prominent individuals involved with Princeton in the 1930s included James Alexander, Albert Einstein, Luther Eisenhart, Solomon Lefschetz, Marston Morse, Oswald Veblen, John von Neumann, Hermann Weyl and Eugene Wigner. Most of these individuals had died at the time of these interviews, however several faculty members as well as graduate students, visitors and permanent researchers took part in the oral history project. Arranged alphabetically by interviewee.

2. The History of Apportionment in America
Extensive debate among experts about which of the many methods that might be used for apportionment simmered in the background as Congress was unable to decide on an apportionment during the first part of the 20th century. The Speaker of the House, Nicholas Longworth, suggested that the National Academy of Sciences make an objective study of the problem. A committee of mathematicians consisting of G.A. Bliss (1876-1951), E.W. Brown (1866-1938) L. P. Eisenhart (1876-1965) and Raymond Pearl (1879-1940) was formed to investigate the situation.
Their report indicated support for Huntington's method. Rather later an even more prestigious group of mathematicians provided a report to the President of the National Academy of Sciences on apportionment methods. The report was signed by Harold Marston Morse (1892-1977) John Von Neumann (1903-1957) , and Luther Eisenhart (who had been involved with the 1929 report also). The report again supported the Huntington-Hill method.
courts
. Many cases eventually reached the Supreme Court where, so far, the Huntington-Hill method has survived and continues to be used to apportion the House of Representatives, though apportionment cases arising from the 2000 census (not specifically involving Huntington-Hill) are still not resolved. For 2000, Huntington-Hill and Webster would give the same apportionment; Dean's method would give Montana one more seat and North Carolina one less (other states the same) than Huntington-Hill; and Hamilton's method would give California one fewer seat and Utah one more seat than Huntington-Hill. Adams' method and Jefferson's Method would give California a number of seats that violates the quota fairness rule.

Reviews In his classic work of geometry, Euclid focused on the properties of flat surfaces. In the age of exploration, mapmakers such as Mercator had to concern themselves with the properties of spherical surfaces. The study of curved surfaces, or non-Euclidean geometry, flowered in the late nineteenth century, as mathematicians such as Riemann increasingly questioned Euclid's parallel postulate, and by relaxing this constraint derived a wealth of new results. These seemingly abstract properties found immediate application in physics upon Einstein's introduction of the general theory of relativity. In this book, Eisenhart succinctly surveys the key concepts of Riemannian geometry, addressing mathematicians and theoretical physicists alike. Review: "Eisenhart's classic work on the application of tensor calculus to geometry was originally published in 1926 . . . It is still one of the best accounts of the subject."E. J. F.
