Valerie M. Chase Statistics on the Table: The History of Statistical Concepts and Methods. Stephen M. Stigler. 448 pp. Harvard University Press, 1998. $45. In 1910 Karl Pearson and an assistant tested the claim, ardently voiced by the temperance movement, that parental alcoholism harmed children. Based on data gathered for other purposes, they found no adverse effect. In the ensuing debate, Pearson issued this challenge to a critic: "Statistics—and unselected statistics—on the table, please." Pearson's determination to put qualitative claims to quantitative test will strike most modern readers as reasonable. But it was controversial at the time. In Statistics on the Table: The History of Statistical Concepts and Methods , statistician and historian of science Stephen M. Stigler collects and revises 22 of his scholarly and often witty essays from the past 25 years reflecting the combination of detective work and statistical thinking that characterize his research. As in his classic

    Early Life
His baptismal name was Giovanni (John), his father's name was Pietro de Bernardone; from his birth Giovanni di Bernardone was called Francesco (Francis) [Ital., =Frenchman], because his father was a frequent traveler in France and admired much that he saw there. The name Francis (and its equivalents in other languages) owes its great popularity to St. Francis, for before him it was a name rarely given. Pietro de Bernardone was a wealthy merchant, and his son's early life was ordinary. At the age of 20, however, Francis was taken prisoner in a battle between Assisi and Perugia and spent a year in prison in Perugia.
    Conversion
Two years after his return from Perugia, Francis set out for the wars in Apulia, but illness forced him home again. He then underwent a conversion that turned him from the worldly life he had been leading. He became markedly devout and ascetic, began dressing in rags, and went on a pilgrimage to Rome (1206). A series of events at that time revealed strikingly the characteristics that Francis was always to exemplify: humility, love of absolute poverty, singular devotion to others and to the Roman Church, and joyous religious fervor.

Other descriptions of Francis Ysidro Edgeworth Edgeworth Francis Ysidro Edgeworth February 8 February 13 ) was an Irish polymath who studied at Trinity College, Dublin before obtaining a scholarship to Balliol College, Oxford where he subsequently became a professor. A deep thinker, his contributions were far ahead of his time. Edgeworth was a highly influential figure in the development of neo-classical economics . He was the first to apply certain formal mathematical techniques to individual decision making in economics. He developed utility theory introducing the indifference curve and the famous Edgeworth box which is now familiar to undergraduates of microeconomics . The high degree of originality demonstrated in his most important book on economics

Offices and Honours Fellow, BA; Vice-Pre., Royal Economic Society; Pres., Royal Statistical Society; Pres., Econ. Section, British Association for the Advancement of Science, 1889, 1922; Ed., Economic Journal
Career His earliest writings are concerned with the application of mathematics to social science questions and in Mathematical Psychics he worked out practical aspects of utilitarian ethics in mathematical form. The insights on exchange equilibrium, welfare economics and the theory of barter are still valuable. His chief output was in article form on topics such as taxation, monopoly, index numbers and value of money. His exposition was obscure and his personality was retiring, with the result that his ideas are continually being rediscovered by those who arrive at them in their own way. Though his work was never drawn together into a comprehensive scheme, he is still valued for his various precedents in mathematical economics and statistics. His ideas on the `contract curve' and the `core' of an exchange economy have recently attracted considerable attention. His editorship of the Economic Journal was of major value to the British economic community.
