Chapter 7: The Victorian World and the Underworld of Economics
Summary Francis Ysidro Edgeworth (1845-1926) Frederic Bastiat (1801-50) Henry George (1839-97) John A. Hobson (1858-40) Alfred Marshall (1842-1924) ... Glossary Edgeworth, a shy, retiring professor and brilliant scholar, became interested in economics because it dealt with quantities. He applied mathematics to economics and derived his Mathematical Psychics (1881). Its thesis stated that every man, based on mathematical formulas, lives for pleasure, leisure time, and material goods. Of course, skilled and talented people are better "pleasure machines" than others; likewise, males are more endowed with sensibility than females. In developing his thesis, Edgeworth justified the divisions of sex and status numerically and denounced the future of trade-unions, which he considered imperfections.

Maria Edgeworth and Classical Political Economy William Kern, Western Michigan University Amongst economists the name Edgeworth is a familiar one owing to the significant contributions of the British neoclassical economist Francis Ysidro Edgeworth. But what is less well known is that F. Y. Edgeworth was not the first in the Edgeworth family to have a considerable interest in economics. His aunt, the Victorian author, Maria Edgeworth (1767-1849), could claim the title of the first political economist in the Edgeworth family. Maria was born in England, though she lived most of her life in Ireland. The family had owned property in Ireland for nearly two centuries when on Maria's fifteenth birthday her father, Richard Edgeworth, moved his family to the family mansion at Edgeworthstown. Edgeworthstown was her home until her death in 1847. The family estate was a large one involving a myriad of activities including the assignment of leases, the collection of rents, and the improvement of the land. In addition, as the most significant property owner in the hamlet, her faather also had a degree of political influence and obligations. As one of the eldest of the twenty-two children which Richard Edgeworth fathered, considerable responsibility fell to Maria both in conducting the affairs of the estate and in educating her siblings. She was, in the words of one of her biographers, "his right hand." As a result, she acquired a familiarity with economic and political matters rare for a woman of her age.

    Biography
    • Francis MARSH was baptised in Edgeworth Church in October 1626. He was educated at Emmanuel College Cambridge, going to Ireland during the Cromwellian period, to become subsequently the Archibishop of Dublin (1682-93). He opposed Tyrconnel, and withdrew to England in 1689, but returned to Ireland after the Battle of the Boyne, 1690 [q.v. Alumni Cantabriensis] . His name was first on the the Act of Attainder List of King James II, prior to the Battle. He married Bishop Jeremy TAYLOR's daughter, Mary, and died in Dublin on 16th Nov 1693. He is buried in Christ Church Cathedral, and his wife Mary was apparently buried with him a few years later. He had a brother Henry, who had at least two daughters. Their father was also named Henry, and his father was also Francis MARSH; the latter is said to have been buried in Edgeworth Church. Grandfather Francis had married Anne AYLESBURY/AILESBURY and they had several children in or around Edgeworth; he also had a number of men serving in the Militia. The Rolodex of Famous Economists What makes an economist famous? There are two basic criteria, and which are at times uncorrelated with each other: recognition by one's colleagues and recognition by the public at large. Among economists, being famous tends to translate in terms of the number of published works, along with the number of times such work is cited by other economists. Published work and citations are what drives, for example, the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics selection process. As Paul Samuelson once said, the only coin of worth among economists is the recognition by one's colleagues. Critics of economics have pointed to the insular nature of recognition criteria practiced by economists and have contended that all too often they write with an increasingly abstruse theoretical and mathematical jargon that ignores too many real world issues. As one economist once said when the empirical data did not fit well in a standard econometric model, "So much the worse for reality". Yet economists have exerted a powerful influence on the course of events over times and they have done so by translating what seems at times as overly abstract notions into concrete tools of understanding economic events, predicting future events, and guiding public policy. As a sampler, consider the following economists. Adam Smith (1723-1790) is famous for his

AN OUTLINE OF THE HISTORY OF GAME THEORY
    by Paul Walker
1 April 1995 This outline was written by Paul Walker in the early 1990s and originally circulated by e-mail, and I coded it for html as a self-teaching project in 1995. For some time Dr. Walker had an improved version served from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, but it seems no longer to be served. Several sites link to this version, and accordingly I will maintain it for now. RM
    Timeline:
    Ancient Times
    The Present

The Babylonian Talmud is the compilation of ancient law and tradition set down during the first five centuries A.D. which serves as the basis of Jewish religious, criminal and civil law. One problem discussed in the Talmud is the socalled marriage contract problem: a man has three wives whose marriage contracts specify that in the case of this death they receive 100, 200 and 300 respectively. The Talmud gives apparently contradictory recommendations. Where the man dies leaving an estate of only 100, the Talmud recommends equal division. However, if the estate is worth 300 it recommends proportional division (50,100,150), while for an estate of 200, its recommendation of (50,75,75) is a complete mystery. This particular Mishna has baffled Talmudic scholars for two millennia. In 1985, it was recognised that the Talmud anticipates the modern theory of cooperative games. Each solution corresponds to the nucleolus of an appropriately defined game.
In a letter dated 13 November James Waldegrave provided the first, known, minimax mixed strategy solution to a two-person game. Waldegrave wrote the letter, about a two-person version of the card game le Her, to Pierre-Remond de Montmort who in turn wrote to Nicolas Bernoulli, including in his letter a discussion of the Waldegrave solution. Waldegrave's solution is a minimax mixed strategy equilibrium, but he made no extension of his result to other games, and expressed concern that a mixed strategy "does not seem to be in the usual rules of play" of games of chance.
