Francis Edgeworth 's parents were Rosa Florentina Eroles, who was Spanish, and Francis Beaufort Edgeworth, who came from an Irish family with strong literary connections. His grandfather was Richard Lovell Edgeworth, an author, inventor and educationalist who was married four times and had 22 children. Among these 22 children were Edgeworth's father and also Maria Edgeworth who was well known as a writer of children's stories and also for novels about life in Ireland. Richard Lovell Edgeworth had an estate at Edgeworthstown, northwest of Dublin, and it was on this estate that Edgeworth was born. Francis Ysidro Edgeworth was originally named Ysidro Francis Edgeworth but transposed his forenames. He was the youngest of his parents five sons and when he was only two years old his father died. Two years later Maria, who also lived on the estate, also died. He did not attend school, but was educated by private tutors in his own home until he reached the age to enter university. At this stage in his life Edgeworth had no particular interest in mathematics. He came to study statistics after only after his university education had finished; his interests at university were in ancient and modern languages. He entered Trinity College, Dublin at the age of 17 and studied French, German, Spanish and Italian. After graduating, he was awarded a scholarship to study at Oxford and he entered Exeter College in January 1867. At Oxford he spent some time at Magdalen and at Balliol, graduating in 1869.

Francis Ysidro Edgeworth February 8 February 13 ) was an Irish polymath who studied at Trinity College, Dublin before obtaining a scholarship to Balliol College, Oxford where he subsequently became a professor. A deep thinker, his contributions were far ahead of his time. Edgeworth was a highly influential figure in the development of neo-classical economics . He was the first to apply certain formal mathematical techniques to individual decision making in economics. He developed utility theory introducing the indifference curve and the famous Edgeworth box which is now familiar to undergraduates of microeconomics . The high degree of originality demonstrated in his most important book on economics, Mathematical Psychics , was matched only by the difficulty of reading it. He frequently referenced literary sources and interspersed the writing with passages in a number of languages, including as Latin, French and Ancient Greek. Alfred Marshall , the most influential economist of the time, commented in his review of Mathematical Psychics
This book shows clear signs of genius, and is a promise of great things to come... His readers may sometimes wish that he had kept his work by him a little longer till he had worked it out a little more fully, and obtained that simplicity which comes only through long labour. But taking it as what it claims to be, 'a tentative study', we can only admire its brilliancy, force, and originality.

In economics , an Edgeworth box , named after Francis Ysidro Edgeworth , is a way of representing various distributions of resource s. Imagine two people (Octavio and Abby) with a fixed amount of resources between the two of themsay, 10 liters of water and 20 hamburgers. If Octavio takes 5 hamburgers and 4 liters of water, then Abby is left with 15 hamburgers and 6 liters of water. The Edgeworth box is a rectangular diagram with Octavio's origin on one corner (represented by the O) and Abby's origin on the opposite corner(represented by the A). The width of the box is the total amount of one good, and the height is the total amount of the other good. Thus, all possible distributions of the goods between the two people can be represented as a point in the box.
The curve connecting points O and A is often called the contract curve . Edgeworth's original two axis depiction was developed into the now familiar box diagram by Pareto in and was popularised in a later exposition by Bowley. The modern version of the diagram is commonly referred to as the Edgeworth-Bowley box.
