America Stands on the Edge of A Grave Constitutional Crisis Linked to Pat Robertson
How the GOP congressional faction is executing a plan to intimidate and control the U.S. Federal Courts
January 6, 2004 By Katherine Yurica In an extraordinary moment of history, Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist pointedly criticized Congress What is at stake is whether America will continue to have an independent judiciary or whether the federal judicial system will be subject to the will of congress through the use of intimidation. The battle lines have been drawn, but what is probably unknown by most of us is that congress is following a blueprint that originated in an unlikely place: it was a gift born on American television.
A background
The Judicial Conference of the United States, chaired by the Chief Justice and consisting of twenty-seven federal judges, is the policy making body of the court system. It voted unanimously to ask Congress to repeal the amendment. Senator Edward Kennedy, worried about the balance of power between the three independent branches of the U.S. government is introducing a bill to repeal the act. However, the controlling faction of congress has no intention of repealing the legislation.
The plans to revamp the U.S. Government began in 1985

Cotswolds

WITHOUT DOUBT Wotton's most infamous son was William Crew, the highwayman who, with eight other wrongdoers, was executed at Gloucester on Friday the 21st of April 1786 for robbing the house of Mrs. Fowles. Quite why William Crew embarked on a life of crime is a matter for conjecture. Certainly it was not a matter of heredity because his father was an honest, industrious workman. Unfortunately the father's influence was removed by an untimely death and young William, at the age of 14 years, was left in his mother's care.
She placed him in employment with a London cheesemonger but William did not like the city life and returned home to Wotton-under-Edge. He spent some three years in idleness and wickedness, pilfering what he could from his mother.
William's first theft to come to the attention of the authorities was the breaking open of a box owned by his sister and stealing three half crowns. With the money he purchased a horse but then, wanting some cash in a hurry, sold the unfortunate animal as meat for Mr. Kingscot's hounds. He also went around the area collecting debts owed to his mother but that good lady never saw the money . . . William spent it on his own extravagances.
Family ties were then at a breaking point and William was turned out of the house. Mrs. Crew married for the second time and moved to Badminton. Even then she was to suffer at the hands of her son. Expressing pleasure at the wedding he offered to go to Badminton and 'air out' the house for the newlyweds. Certainly he let the air in . . . but he also assisted some of the contents to go out. In fact he made off, with the best bed.

If the Election Were Held Today Winner Loser 269 Electoral Votes 168 solid, 59 likely, 42 iffy 269 Electoral Votes 149 solid, 75 likely, 45 iffy Analysis Nov. 2, 2:30 a.m. ET: Our Electoral Scorecard compares the vote shares of the president and his challenger. It does not take into account the general principle, based on previous election results, that the president's share of the actual vote does not exceed his vote share in the final pre-election polls. How would that factor affect the outcome? The first table below lists 11 contested states in order of Bush's vote share. Theoretically, the deeper you go into the table, the harder it is for Bush to capture the state, given his current vote share. To win the election, Bush would have to take at least one state in which his average vote share is only 47.7 percent. If he fails to take Florida, he would have to win Iowa or Pennsylvania, where his vote share now stands at 47.3 percent. Continue Article placeAd(2,'slate.homepage/slate')

Frye Art Museum

Seattle, WA, USA
A selection of direct and challenging portraits and landscapes by contemporary artist William Beckman are on view at the Frye in Painting on the Edge: The Art of William Beckman Aug. 2 - October 27.  Beckman paints himself, loved-ones, and the land he has lived upon.  His subjects, whether mother or lover, are delivered to the viewer with gripping details, without embellishment.  His work, whether of a spouse, or parent, partner or friend, is the product of a long-term relationship between artist and subject.  These relationships are what inspire the content on all of Beckmans work and in a room full of work by Beckman, it becomes clear that this content is deeply felt. Beckman creates his figurative art using a unique method.  He applies paint, then shaves off layer after layer from the surface with a razor, repainting and polishing the canvas to create lustrous, absorbing images.  His realism is stripped of sentiment, his un-idealized portraits scrupulously rendered and his expansive tracts of farmland theatrically scaled. Each painting is epic in significance and matter-of-fact at the same time. The exhibition is organized by the Frye Art Museum and includes works with these themes: boxes, couples, landscapes, drawings, portraits, and figures. Works from Beckmans earliest period consist of a series of boxes (from 1967 to 1970) depicting solitary female nudes within imaginary domestic interiors. Later, he created frontal images, primarily of his former wife Diana. In many cases these figures are riveting, the model virtually staring down the viewer.

On the Edge With JFK, Jr.
Since I knew John as a frat brother, please allow me some words in his defense.
By Dave Kopel of the Independence Institute The day after the plane crash, the Drudge Report Moreover, Kennedy's maturity and tolerance would have elevated him into the first rank of senators. Unlike the majority of current Democratic senators, Kennedy had no taste for the politics of personal destruction. In his magazine George But for some pundits, wistful "might-have-beens" quickly gave way to "should-have-beens." Kennedy allegedly should have already been in political office. By age 38, John F. Kennedy, Sr., had been elected three times to the U.S. House, then to the Senate, and was well on his way to the Presidency. Congress and the state legislatures are full of men in their twenties and early thirties. Had Kennedy Jr. run for the House of Representatives from some New York City district, he would have won as easily as his father had scooped up the Congressional seat from Boston. I think that his decision not to fall into politics reflected the same humility on a public level for which he was so respected on a personal level.

Land of My Birth

This is a wonderful book describing the plight of Filipino emigrants as they work abroad to escape corruption and hunger back home. While life is better for many Filipinos abroad, this lifestyle carries many heartbreaks. This book will move you to action. “Munoz...weaves unadorned facts into an unapologetic account of the present socio-economic situation of his country. His exposure as an international entrepreneur contributes to his deeper appreciation of the land of his birth; that’s why his recommendations on where the Philippines can improve are...doable. Land of My Birth is good company.” - Michelle P. So, Managing Editor, Sun Star Daily Philippines
From: $12.70 The Sound of Meaning: Comparative Linguistics of Ancient Egyptian, Maya and Nahuatl
When similar kinds of linguistic correspondences were perceived by William Jones in the latter part of the eighteenth century, between Sanskrit and other languages, such examples were sufficient to convince scholars that all of those languages probably came from a mother tongue, the Indo-European language. Today, scholars seem unwilling or hesitant to accept the idea that the same laws of comparative linguistics may apply to ancient Egyptian, Maya and Nahuatl. The reason for this is quite simple: there is no historical basis for considering the possibility that the peoples of these different languages had any physical contact between themselves. This book attempts to show linguistic correspondences between these languages, and posits the notion that these cultures come from an identical source language.

DAVID S. BRODER    THE WASHINGTON POST
Bipartisanship at the waters' edge
May 15, 2005 She was preaching to the choir. A year ago, philanthropist Bill Clapp, former Governor and Senator Dan Evans, former Environment Protection Agency head Bill Ruckelshaus, prominent attorney William Gates Sr., and former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman John Shalikashvili formed the Seattle Initiative for Global Development, with the ambitious agenda of eliminating extreme poverty worldwide. Encouraged by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Richard Lugar and others, they have organized similar groups in Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Portland, Ore., and San Francisco, with Los Angeles, New York City and Tampa due to be next. Their goal, Evans said, is to have a national network ready by next spring to advocate a large increase by the United States and other nations in development assistance for the billion people who live on less than $1 a day. Bill Center, the president of the Washington Council on International Trade, said that humanitarian considerations aside, no other investment is more likely to reduce the threat of terrorism and improve the future marketplace for American goods than eliminating extreme poverty.
