Summary: The American century, far from being over, is on the way. The information revolution, which capsized the Soviet Union and propelled Japan to eminence, has altered the equation of national power. America leads the world in the new technologies. Its emerging military systems can thwart any threat. On the "soft-power" side, it projects its ideals and other countries follow. To prevent an information race, America must share its lead; to preserve its reputation, it must keep its house in order.
Joseph S. Nye, Jr., former Chairman of the National Intelligence Council and Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Affairs in the Clinton administration, is Dean of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Admiral William A. Owens is former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Clinton administration.

Genetic artist with an edge William Haseltine sneers at genome project, emphasizes new drugs Sunday, June 25, 2000 By Byron Spice, Science Editor, Post-Gazette Wearing a ruffled shirt and a bow in his hair, Luis Egidio Melendez holds a paintbrush in his right hand and a sketch of a man in his left. Garbed in a business suit with his thinning black hair slicked back, William Haseltine holds a pen in his left hand and a chart of human proteins in his right. William Haseltine of Human Genome Sciences in a protein discovery laboratory at his company. (Matt Freed, Post-Gazette) These images a 1746 self-portrait by the Spanish painter and a photo of the biochemist are juxtaposed in the annual report of Haseltine's company, Human Genome Sciences. The symbolism isn't hard to grasp. Haseltine is redrawing the human body, one protein at a time. And Haseltine, a man not noted for his modesty, no doubt savors the biochemist-as-artist analogy. "There's a new medicine being born under everyone's eyes," said Haseltine, speaking in a calm, soft voice at his Rockville, Md., headquarters. The source of what he calls "regenerative medicine" is brewing in fermentation tanks on the floor below: natural proteins, including hormones and antibodies, that will help the body heal itself or compensate for deficits. Think of what insulin has done for diabetics and imagine that approach being applied to afflictions ranging from bedsores to osteoporosis, from high blood pressure to lymphoma.

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Called by her contemporaries, "The only honest, unselfish, indomitable hellcat in the history of conservation," and the "glorious Joan of Arc of conservation," Rosalie Barrow Edge was a giant in the history of American Conservation. These epitaphs did not come lightly for Rosalie Edge fought hard to win her battles. Her move into the arena of conservation and species’ protection no doubt had its seeds planted when her family, in 1915, bought a summer home on Long Island. She developed a keen interest in birds and her interest in birdwatching grew and remained an important force for the rest of her life. Throughout her lifetime she was able to build her "life list" to over 800 species. Rosalie Edge was not a religious person in the strict sense, but was quick to point out, "......that when we who have feeling for birds observe a mighty eagle or the perfection of a tiny warbler, we see, not the inspiration of God filtered through human agency, but the very handiwork of the Creator Himself."

Programme 1 - Who Should Get The Transplant?
Shown: 18 November, 9pm BBC2 This first film in a series of three focuses on the stories of patients requiring liver transplants, and the agonising decisions doctors face about who lives and dies. The doctors must decide if a man who has attempted suicide, a 14-year-old girl and a recovering alcoholic each have the right to a new liver. Simon Vickers was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham after taking over 100 paracetemol tablets. The overdose was an attempt to end his life following a number of years battling clinical depression. Lying unconscious in intensive care with just 24 hours to live, doctors must decide if he should be given a second chance. Also trying to get on the transplant list is teenager Nicola Hill, she has been recently diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis, a condition that causes her own body to attack her liver. Nicola, along with her parents, needs to make an urgent decision - should she opt for a liver transplant. It could help her overcome her immediate problems, but carries a one in five chance of her dying.

    William Brendan McPhillips
    A POET ON
    A MAGICAL JOURNEY HOME
I was born on the edge of the New World and grew up on the edge of the old. Poetry was born on the ocean between the two; on a ship called the Pennland , going the wrong way in a world collapsing in war. We left the Bronx behind and were heading for Glasgow, Scotland. On November 27th, 1939, somewhere at sea, a poet named Bob Thomson set the course that brings me, now, to you.
By the time I got to Ballaghaderreen, in County Roscommon, in the West of Ireland, I knew I had the poet's ear. There, on The Way Of The Little Oaks , that were no more; at the foot of Bockagh Hill and the edge of three Counties, I heard the language of ancestors, the words of Milton and Wordsworth, the grace of the Latin Mass, the Glaswegian of my mother, and traces of America in my brother's voices and always the echo of Bob Thomson's poem about me.
Poetry is a memorial art, a way of remembering the moments of consciousness, creating a world we would know and love the fuller for having found ourselves at home in it.
Between then and now, here and there, there were many diversions, many encounters and yet, for me at least, poetry was always alive, embracing the whole of my world with tantalizing thoughts of the power and joy of love, of being on a magical journey into the eternal here and now.

These qualities are important:

An article by Mark william Olson pull quote On the edge of society. On the edge of an explosive fury over all he has endured. Put down. Demeaned.
    http://www.theotherside.org/archive/jul-aug97/olson.html
An article by Mark William Olson
'm nearly asleep when the phone rings. In a drowsy daze, I head down the hall of our Chicago apartment toward the phone. "Hello?" I ask, as alertly as I can manage.
"Mark, you ain't a' gone to bed, has you?" It's Sandy June, her voice resounding with the rich, Southern mountains that gave her birth.
"Well, I was getting ready," I answer, slightly understating the reality.
There's a tremble in Sandy's voice. "We was wondering, could you come over to our place in a bit?"
    I ask what's happened.
It's Jimmy Junior, she says. He's come home half-crazed, half-drunk. He's got a gun, and he says he's gonna kill himselfalong with anybody who gets in his way. He's been storming around like a wild man. Finally, he's gone back to his bedroom. And he's been back there a long time.
She tells me that they could hear him ranting and raving for a while, but now it's quiet. She and Jimmy Senior figure Jimmy Junior might be asleep before long.
"We was thinking," she continues, "maybe you could come over and get the gun away from him. None of us dares go near him. But we was thinking that maybe he'd listen to you..."
I can't remember where or how I first met Jimmy Junior. But I remember some of the many ramshackle Chicago flats and houses I've visited him in. And I can picture the times I've sat with him at mental institutions.

    60. The Other Side -- Back From The Edge: An Article By Mark William Olson (page 2)
Violence and crime emerge when people are pushed to the edge. When community is broken. Author Mark william Olson lives in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
    http://www.theotherside.org/archive/jul-aug97/olson2.html
    Previous page
Unfortunately, it has usually been the way of humanity to take those who are on the edge and push them further.
Some children grow up without the full love of family and community, and their behavior shows it. So what do we do? We push them into separate classrooms and treat them in separate ways. And when, as a result of their growing separation from family and community, they behave even worse, we send them to detention centers and jails. We declare them fit only for "life in the tombs," far from the village, far from the community, far from the love that could bring them back.
Violence and crime are always least prevalent when there is a strong and thriving community. A community that is inclusive, that shares as one in the amplitudes and scarcities of life. A community that includes within its boundsand keeps within its boundsall those with whom God has blessed it, regardless of origin or status or outward identity.
Violence and crime emerge when people are pushed to the edge. When community is broken.
Yet, so often, the response of humanity to violence and crime has been not to restore community but to break it further. To lock people up. To chain people down. To shove those who are broken and afraid ever further toward the edge. To chop off their heads, inject them with poisons, or boil them in their own juices.
