William Edge 's parents were both schoolteachers. He was educated at his local school, Stockport Grammar School, and from there he went to Cambridge where he studied mathematics at Trinity College. After graduating, he continued working for his doctorate at Trinity on projective geometry . Cambridge was at that time a centre for geometry research with Baker 's school flourishing there. Edge's fellow students included P du Val and J G Semple but other famous geometers joined the group while Edge was at Cambridge including the slightly younger men H S M Coxeter and J A Todd After holding a fellowship at Trinity he was offered a lectureship at the University of Edinburgh by E T Whittaker which he accepted and took up the post in 1932. Edge was to spend the rest of his career at Edinburgh and David Monk, writing in [2], suggests that the reason that Edge never moved to a chair in another university was because:- ... the Scottish hills and mountains, which he loved, kept him in Edinburgh.

The launch of Sputnik in
1957 forced the United States into the space race. Fighting in the Cold War the Americans needed to show the world that they too could launch a rocket into space - and they had to do it quickly. Less than three months later Explorer 1 was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The man behind it: William Pickering from Wellington, New Zealand.

FIRST FLYER
Richard Pearse: "Mad Pearse", "Bamboo Dick", self-taught inventor, prophetic designer, trail blazing aviator and eccentric visionary. On or about 31st March 1903 a reclusive New Zealand farmer Richard Pearse climbed into a self-built monoplane and flew for about 140 metres before crashing into a gorse hedge on his Waitohi property . Even at half the distance Pearse must have felt the liberating but anxious exhilaration of flying. There is uncertainty about whether it met the definitions of sustained flight, but it came eight months before the Wright Brothers entered the record books at Kitty Hawk North Carolina on 17th December 1903. Childhood Dreaming
Richard William Pearse was born on 3 December 1877 at Waitohi Flat, Temuka, South Island, New Zealand, the fourth of nine children to Digory Pearse and Sarah Brown, Digory an immigrant from Cornwall, England and Sarah from Ireland, who was working in a shop in Timaru when Digory met her. They farmed a property, Trewarlet, five miles inland from Temuka, where the Pearses, known locally as the "gentleman farmers", maintained an active social and cultural life. They fielded a strong tennis team, building their own courts on the estate, and even in an age where self rather than mass amusement was the norm, they were uncommonly musical, forming their own family orchestra in which Richard played the cello.

March 04, 2005 Bill Maher: Over the edge!
: Bill Maher has on Ward Churchill tonight and it is an unbelievable performance. Unbelievable terrible, insensitive, numbnutty, offensive, wrong-headed, anti-American, rude.... Maher sits Churchill down and says, "Some things we have in common, some things we don't... I know to a degree what you've been going through, some things taken out of context... You've been Dixie-Chicked...." He says they disagree but: "I think you deserve to be heard." Maher then leads the apparently inarticulate Churchill down his path. He asks Churchill to talk about "the blood that America has on its hands." Churchill can't get a paragraph out. Maher keeps leading: "Just tell the folks what you think..." Churchill mutters how the attack on the World Trade Center was not senseless because "anything that was that well-planned wasn't senseless." Anything this poorly expressed in senseless. Even Maher can't take it.... because Churchill isn't making the point Maher wants him to make: the blood-on-our-hands point. So Maher says, "Let me do it for you... There was the bringing over of the slaves... Then we're talking about the Indians in America, your people, you're part Indian..." Churchill nods. And they add up numbers. Maher continues: "So we have a lot of blood on our hands... So then you talk about the first Iraq war. How many died there?.... And then the sanctions... I know we don't want to hear this but the country of America has blood on its hands.... Not to mention in Germany and Japan when we were close to winning the war we obliterated Dresden...."

William Moyers
was born in Oklahoma on June 6, 1934, and was raised in Texas. He began his journalism career at age 16 as a cub reporter on the Marshall News Messenger.
During his 30 years in the media Moyers has received numerous awards for excellence, including the prestigious "Gold Baton" from the Alfred I. duPont Columbia University Award, and more than 30 Emmy Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Two of his public television series, "Creativity" and "A Walk Through the 20th Century" were named the outstanding informational series by the Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1991, Moyers was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Moyers retired from television in December, 2004 at age 70. Upon his retirement the AP News Service quoted Moyers as saying, "I'm going out telling the story that I think is the biggest story of our time: how the right-wing media has become a partisan propaganda arm of the Republican National Committee. We have an ideological press that's interested in the election of Republicans, and a mainstream press that's interested in the bottom line. Therefore, we don't have a vigilant, independent press whose interest is the American people."
In addition to broadcasting, Moyers was Deputy Director of the Peace Corps in the
