J. Presper Eckert (1919-1995) e John William Mauchly (1907-1980) Eckert Mauchly Tecnologi americani. Furono i creatori dei primi calcolatori elettronici digitali: l'ENIAC - in collaborazione con Herman H. Goldstine - e in seguito l'UNIVAC e il BINAC L'entità del loro contributo alla realizzazione dell'EDVAC è stato invece oggetto di controversie, anche legali, che li hanno visti schierati contro von Neumann e lo stesso Goldstine. La loro società, con la quale avevano prodotto l'UNIVAC, fu in seguito assorbita dalla Sperry Rand Co Nel 1945, i piani del computer moderno erano chiaramente definiti e l'EDVAC venne messo in cantiere. L'ENIAC era appena stato completato senza che, per questo, la tecnologia dei tubi a vuoto usati per il calcolo fosse accettata da tutti, nonostante l'autorità conferita al progetto dalla partecipazione di un uomo illustre come von Neumann.

"Outline of plans for development of electronic computers" by J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Computer geeks who love history will have a chance to get their hands on rare documents and technical relics at an auction in New York this week. "The Origins of Cyberspace," Christie's first sale of this kind, will take place at the auction house Wednesday. Items on the block include an early version of a data storage disc dating from 1951 that weighs 5.5 pounds and could hold about the equivalent of one paragraph of text. There will also be a typescript of the first example of a high-level programming language, the Univac short code, dating from 1952. One item sure to get attention will be "Outline of plans for development of electronic computers" by J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly. Eckert and Mauchly developed the first commercially available computer and founded the world's first electric computer company. The plans for the first electronic computer produced in America and the electric computer company are estimated at $50,000 to $70,000.

Common Misspellings for J. Presper Eckert John Presper Eckert , a computer pioneer, was born April 9 in Philadelphia and died June 3 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania Together with John W. Mauchly he constructed the ENIAC , sometimes considered the first digital computer (but see John Vincent Atanasoff for conflicting claims), from . Mauchly concentrated on the overall design while Eckert constructed the electronic circuits. Both Eckert and Mauchly left the Moore School at the University of Pennsylvania in March , mainly because of two reasons: (1) 1946 the University of Pennsylvania adopted a new patent policy to protect the intellectual purity of the research it sponsored - had Eckert and Mauchly stayed beyond March, the new policy would have required them to assign all their patents to the university, and (2) the conflict over widely-adopted term von Neumann architecture that ignores the developers of the ENIAC, viz .   • Initiated in 1943, the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator ENIAC ) is installed and officially unveiled. Built by Mr. J. Presper Eckert and Mr. John Mauchley as well as 50 engineers at the University of Pennsylvania’s Moore School , the computer becomes the first large-scale electronic digital computer. The $500,000 army sponsored project can calculate millions of military ballistics tables at the speed of 357 multiplication problems per second. Assisted by Dr. John von Neumann, a Hungarian-born mathematician, the designers of the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator ENIAC ) begin work on a stored-program successor which will become known as the Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer EDVAC ). The concept of the stored-program technology which was an electronic serial vacuum tube machine with mercury delay lines and magnetic wire secondary memory is published in a lecture series at the University of Pennsylvania’s Moore School . The Moore School Lectures and the British Lead in Stored Program Computer Development (1946 -1953)
System Design Technology In 1946 between 8th July and 31st August the Moore School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania held a special course entitled Theory and Techniques for Design of Electronic Digital Computers. The course was organized in response to interest generated by; the schools public announcement of the ENIAC, and the publication of The First Draft of a Report on the EDVAC. 1945 by Jon von Neumann. Attendance was by invitation only and the "Students" were selected from the leading experts at the major institutions working on the development of computing devices in the US and UK. At the time of this event there were only three published designs for a stored program computer and it was expected that all those present were familiar with these documents.

Definition of a Computer
- before 1935, a computer was a person who performed arithmetic calculations. Between 1935 and 1945 the definition referred to a machine, rather than a person. The modern machine definition is based on von Neumann's concepts: a device that accepts input, processes data, stores data, and produces output. Walker and Company, New York, 1999, viii + 262 pages, notes, index Book Review By William Aspray High-speed calculating machines are of course complex systems, and many different models were designed and constructed before the electronic/digital/stored-program architecture design triad became standard. The historian is not so interested as the practitioner in determining "firsts"-and in fact sees the concept as relative. Which machine obtains the honor as "the first computer" depends on the answers to several questions: Which technical features are considered most important? Was the machine merely conceived, or was it actually built? Was a prototype or a full-scale machine placed in operation? How was the machine used? No matter which machine is believed to have been the first computer, the construction of the ENIAC is one of the signal events in computing history. The United States designed a multitude of new guns and ammunition for the Second World War, and gunners needed tables that would tell them how to aim, based on target distance, wind speed, humidity, temperature, and other factors. Teams of human "computers" were falling steadily behind in their race to calculate the entries for these tables. The University of Pennsylvania's Moore School of Electrical Engineering held a contract with the Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground to carry out some of these calculations because it was one of the few places to have a powerful computing device-a differential analyzer copied after one designed at MIT. But even this machine was not enough to keep up with the demand for calculations.

I must confess that I don't own a personal computer. I have no reason to. I suppose I could use a computer for my hobby, electronic musical instruments, and conduct research on how to generate an accurate replica of a piano note (today's electronic pianos lack warmth in their tones). But I would need a pretty fast computer to handle the sampling of a note's characteristics in a reasonable amount of time. I may just wait for the next generation of personal computers based on the 32-bit microprocessors now appearing from a number of manufacturers.
We've come a long way since the day when Dr. Howard Aiken, designer of the pioneering Mark series of computers at Harvard, could say that just a half-dozen electronic machines would be enough to fulfill the world's computational needs (a statement he later retracted). On the other hand, I remember my late colleague John Mauchly talking about the importance of personal computers long before they existed.
During the late 1950s I was involved in trying to build what could now be called a personal computer, probably the first such machine to fit on a desktop. We used hundreds of magnetic core amplifiers and diodes, a few transistors and tubes, and a motor-driven drum for memory storage. The same motor powered a flyprinter, which typed the computer's output onto a moving strip of paper. Unlike the first microcomputer systems, which came later, our machine included a keyboard for easy input. We figured we could sell our Desk Computer for $5,000. Some insurance firms expressed interest, but our executives just couldn't see business need for that small a computer.

Background
The ENIAC (Electrical Numerical Integrator and Computer), the largest and most powerful early computer, was designed to compute the paths of artillery shells, and to solve computational problems in fields such as nuclear physics, aerodynamics, and weather prediction. The U.S. Army Ordnance Department funded The Moore School for Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania to build the computer between 1943 and 1945. J. Presper Eckert and John W. Mauchly were the principle designers. The ENIAC computed a thousand times faster than any existing device.
In the "Computing Gallery, Computers Before 1946," of the National Museum of American History (NMAH) on February 2, 1988, David Allison , Curator at NMAH, interviewed J. Presper Eckert about significant aspects of the design, development, and operation of the ENIAC. Specifically, the session documented both technical and non-technical aspects of the design of the ENIAC, including Eckert's engineering background, early uses of calculators to perform ballistics calculations, materials testing, and the assembly of components. Eckert demonstrated the operation of the accumulators, plug-in units, wiring conduits, and function tables with the original artifacts displayed in the gallery.
Much of the session was recorded for inclusion in the "Information Age" exhibit which opened at NMAH in May, 1990. The video producer, Peter Vogt, frequently interrupted or stopped the interview to meet script and exhibit requirements. Therefore, this session has a number of rough cuts for a professional production.
