Biography At the university of Pennsylvenia Eckert and the late John. W. Mauchly created ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer). A 30 ton leviathan that contained less computational power than a single one of today's tiny silicon chips. Designed to figure trajectories for world war II atillery, ENIAC was 1000 times as fast as contemporary calculators , and became an invaluable tool for scientist working to build the first atom bomb. After selling their business in 1950 to Sperry Rand Corp, now Unisys, the partners continued to advance in their field. Eckert was awarded a National Science Medal in 1968.

After the war, he and Mauchly decided to form their own company and build computers for business. They were better engineers than businessmen and their company was soon bought out by Remington-Rand. Their first successful machine was the UNIVAC I. Pres stayed with the company until his retirement and held over 80 patents on various electronic inventions.

  • J. Presper Eckert Born: April 9, 1919 Died: June 3, 1995 Field: Computer hardware; computer engineering Focus: Developed, with John Mauchly, the ENIAC, BINAC, and UNIVAC computers, innovative early contributions to the computing industry. Country: United States Era: 1950 to 1969
Presper Eckert along with John Mauchly built the Electronic Integrator and Computer (ENIAC) at the University of Pennsylvania. The ENIAC was the first general purpose electronic digital computer. It was designed to compile tables for the trajectories of bombs and shells. Eckert and Mauchly also started the Electric Control Company in 1946. Its first order was to build the Binary Automatic Computer (BINAC) from Northrop Aircraft Company. The advantage of this machine was its ability to store data on magnetic tape rather than punched cards. The company then became the Eckert-Marchly Computer Corporation. It also built the Universal Automatic Computer (UNIVAC), which was the first commercially producted computer in the United States. The company ran into financial difficulty during 1950 and was acquired by the Remington Rand Corporation. In 1952, the UNIVAC predicted the election of Dwight D. Eisenhower as President of the United States before the polls closed. Through an additional merger, the company then became Unisys. Throughout this time, Presper Eckert was an executive of the company until his retirement in 1989. Today, Unisys is traded on the NYSE and employs approximately 37,000 people with its company headquarters located outside Philadelphia. In 2003, the company reported a net income of approximately $258 million.

    J. Presper Eckert was only a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania in 1943 when he began his momentous work on ENIAC (Electronic Integrator and Computer). His ingenuity helped to solve a major problem of ENIAC: how to make vacuum tubes which often burned out without warning more reliable on the whole. Eckert's success went beyond his work on ENIAC. He formed his own company with co-inventor, John Maunchly, which later merged with Remington Rand. His business experience rivaled that of top success stories and his optimum success is evident in the various awards, including the US National Medal of Science in 1969.

These three American computer pioneers symbolize the dawn of the Computer Age. Their machines were the first automatic calculators that captured the imagination of the general public. Howard H. Aiken John W. Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert developed the ENIAC, the world's first electronic large-scale general-purpose digital automatic calculator, at the University of Pennsylvania. It was fully operational in 1946.
The two inventors were convinced that computers could bring benefits beyond the area of scientific and military applications. They set up their own business to develop the UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer). Due to financial difficulties, Mauchly and Eckert had to sell their company to Remington Rand in 1950 but remained in charge of the development of UNIVAC. On presidential election night in 1952, UNIVAC, on the basis of only 3,398,745 votes in, predicted a landslide victory for Eisenhower - in complete contrast to opinion polls that had predicted a close race. But UNIVAC was right! After this election night on television, UNIVAC rapidly became the generic name of a computer in the USA.
