After some deliberation, consulting with family and friends, and exploring his options Eckert and Mauchly, with some financial backing from Pres' father, started the worlds first computer business, Electronic Control Co. Their first offices were located at 1215 Walnut St., Philadelphia, PA In the collection are Pres' original carbon copies of their business plan, including their original employment agreement signed by Eckert, Mauchly, and the Corporate Secretary. The vision they describe in their plan is uncannily accurate and foresees most of the areas to which computers have been put to use. Awards All text and images unless otherwise noted © 2000 Daniel F. Presper Eckert are the scientists credited with the invention of the Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer (ENIAC), the first general-purpose electronic digital computer, completed in 1946. Mauchly was born August 30, 1907 in Cincinnati, Ohio. His father was a physicist at the Carnegie Institute of Washington, D.C., and perhaps influenced by him, young Mauchly became adept in the sciences. This earned him the Engineering Scholarship of the State of Maryland, which enabled him to enroll at Johns Hopkins University in the fall of 1925 as an undergraduate in the Electrical Engineering program. In 1927 he enrolled directly in a Ph.D. program there and transferred to the graduate physics program of the university. He completed his Ph.D. in 1932 and became a professor of physics at Ursinus College near Philadelphia. J. Presper Eckert Jr. was born April 9, 1919 in Philadelphia. In 1937 he entered the Moore School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1941. Afterwards he was given a post as an instructor at the Moore School. Meanwhile, in 1941, Mauchly had become a student there in a new program designed to educate students on defense technology. Eckert was one of his teachers.

Presper Eckert and John Mauchly at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Started in 1943, it took 200,000 man-hours and nearly a half million dollars to complete two years later. Programmed by plugging in cords and setting thousands of switches, the decimal-based machine used 18,000 vacuum tubes, weighed 30 tons and took up 1,800 square feet. It cost a fortune in electricity to run; however, at 5,000 additions per second, it was faster than anything else. Initially targeted for trajectory calculations, by the time it was ready to go, World War II had ended. Soon after it was moved to the army's Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland where it was put to good work computing thermonuclear reactions in hydrogen bombs and numerous other problems until it was dismantled in 1955. Referring to ENIAC's public introduction in early 1946, The New York Times said "One of the war's top secrets, an amazing machine which applies electronic speeds for the first time to mathematical tasks hitherto too difficult and cumbersome for solution, was announced here tonight." Today, all 1,800 square feet of that machinery fits on the head of a pin.

John Mauchly envisioned the ENIAC. He was a professor of Physics at Ursinus College . In 1943 he attended a workshop at Penn. There, he saw the Differential Analyzer producing firing tables. Mauchly realized that he could build an electronic machine that could be much faster. J. Presper Eckert solved the engineering challenges. The chief challenge was tube reliability. Eckert was able to get good reliability by running the tubes at 1/4 power. Together, they proposed the ENIAC to the

David Allison (DKA): Let's go back to 1943 and the circumstances that surrounded the invention of this machine. How do you remember the environment? JPE: I don't know what you mean when you say how do I remember the environment. DKA: Was it a pressured environment? How was the problem originally presented to you? Peter Vogt: Why did they stop you? What was important about it that they put you on to? Set the stage for us. JPE: What happened is that during World War II, a number of large guns, field pieces, were sent over to Africa. Tables were sent with them, telling them where to set the dials on the gun to allow for the amount of wind blowing and the height of the elevation of the target, with the expectation that the shell would land where you wanted it to when you followed the prescription in the book. The shells did not land where you wanted them to. The people down there using these guns were having to make guesswork corrections on the tables to hit anything, not very satisfactory in the middle of a war. The trouble was traced to the fact that the ground was more resilient in Africa, due to the type of vegetational growth in the jungle.

    J. Presper Eckert, Jr. (1919-1995)
