(October 1991) Pierre Duhem: Philosophy and History in the Work of a Believing Physicist R.N.D. Martin More than any other major twentieth-century writer, Pierre Duhem has been the victim of ill-informed guesswork. For instance, many references to Duhem stress the importance of his Catholic faith, but nearly all of them draw the obvious-and entirely erroneous-conclusions about the role of Catholicism in Duhem's thinking.

Su orientación filosófica, relacionada con la de Poincaré, le llevó a una separación entre física y metafísica, aduciendo que la ciencia no debe ser explicativa sino tan sólo representativa. Pierre Maurice Marie Duhem (A scientist trained in physics) physicist and (Click link for more info and facts about philosopher of science) philosopher of science
Duhem adopted an (Someone who plays a musical instrument (as a profession)) instrumentalist view of science. He gave his name to the (Click link for more info and facts about Quine-Duhem thesis) Quine-Duhem thesis , which holds that for any given set of observations there are an innumerably large number of explanations. Thus empirical evidence cannot force the revision of a theory. He further observed that the failure of a theory to make accurate predictions implies a failure of the theory as a whole, not of a particular part. These views were later adopted by (United States philosopher and logician who championed an empirical view of knowledge that depended on language (1908-2001)) W. V. Quine

Pierre-Maurice Duhem
French physicist and philosopher and historian of science. After studying at the ‰cole Normale Sup©rieure he taught at Lille (1887–1893), Rennes (1893–1894), and Bordeaux (1894–1916). His extension and application of the thermodynamic potential to topics in chemistry ranks him among the founders of modern physical chemistry. His Trait© d'©nerg©tique g©n©rale (2 vol., 1911) aimed at a generalized, abstract thermodynamics that subsumed classical mechanics. His major philosophical work, La th©orie physique: Son objet, sa structure (1906), depreciates pictorial models in favor of an axiomatic approach, according to which a physical theory is not an explanation, but a system of mathematical propositions that represents experimental laws. As a historian, Duhem discovered important currents of medieval thought in physics, cosmology, and astronomy, which he saw as precursors of the 17th century scientific revolution.

Signatures of Macintosh Files
Summary: What are Macintosh signatures? Where are they stored? What do they mean?
What Are Signatures?
The Macintosh doesn't use three-byte extensions (or even longer than three bytes, nowadays) to identify the very nature or contents of files, but signatures
Signatures are strings of eight bytes, four for the creator (the program which created the file) and four for the file type (text, picture, and so on).
See also our Comments for Techies
The correspondance between signatures and icons is managed by the Finder, for all programs which happened to exist on a volume, in the Desktop file (an hidden system file which is never shown by the Macintosh but exists on every disk). With System 7 and upwards, the Desktop graduated to a double Desktop DB Desktop DF, for reasons which would led us too far away from our main issue. Signatures Tables
Here are some of the signatures and corresponding PC extensions we collected (if you want to add or correct something, please feel free to send us an e-mail at , we try to update the site frequently).

PHILOSOPHY
Meetings chaired by Victor Suchar unless otherwise stated
Victor Suchar Member 2 September 2003 A potted history If there is a problem in the philosophy of science, which can be said to be central, it is that of the nature and structure of scientific theories. A philosophy of science, is in effect, little more than an analysis of theories and their roles in the scientific enterprise (Why's that? How well are these theories constructed? Are they well founded? What are their pre-suppositions and are they coherent? Whom should we believe?). My claim in this talk is that Duhem's The Aim and Structure of Scientific Theory (originally published in 1906) was the most profound of these analysis, (related, of course to classical physics), and the precursor of all others. But in only 20 years, Duhem's great work became neglected, even forgotten (outside France) - it did not reflect the then recent and fundamental developments in physics. By late 1920s, it became normal for philosophers of science to construe scientific theories as axiomatic calculi which are given a partial observational interpretation by means of correspondence rules (between statement and experiment), as described in Rudolf Carnap's

Philosophy of Science and Philosophy of Technology
BY PAUL TOMASSI, UNIVERSITY of ABERDEEN In his introduction to the Oxford volume Theories of Explanation , Joseph Pitt (Page 6) claims that: "What is crucial is the insight that the kind of knowledge science produces...permits the development of explanations, and it is those explanations which are the real payoff." The Philosophies of Science "Theories are the crown of science, for in them our understanding of the world is expressed. The function of theories is to explain." No one in the philosophical community will be surprised by the identification of explanation as what is most valuable about scientific theories. Preoccupation with explanation is definitive of the philosophy of science. However, that explanation does represent the principal virtue and, indeed, the point, of scientific theorising is by no means a self-evident truth and it seems to me that this is not a case which can easily be made. My purpose in this paper is to refute the thesis that explanation is the real payoff of scientific theorising. Having done so, I propose an alternative account of the scientific payoff and conclude with an attempt to highlight a fundamental integrity between the philosophy of science and the philosophy of technology.
I
"The kinetic theory of gases is nothing but the exploitation of the molecule model of gas, and that model is itself conceived by reference to the mechanics of material particles."
