Square Packing
Ed Pegg Jr. , December 1, 2003 For Christmas, Mrs. Potipher Perkins received a very pretty patchwork quilt constructed of 169 square pieces of silk material. The puzzle is to find the smallest number of square portions of which the quilt could be composed and show how they might be joined together. Or, to put it the reverse way, divide the quilt into as few square portions as possible by merely cutting the stitches. (Henry E. Dudeney, Amusements in Mathematics , Problem 173, Mrs Perkins's Quilt) Define a quilt as square made from smaller integer squares. The order of a quilt is the number of smaller squares. The size is the edge length n of the full quilt. I urge everyone to try Dudeney's puzzle divide a 13×13 square into 11 smaller integer sided squares. Alternately, find an order 11 solution for quilt of size 13. No smaller order is possible, so this is an optimal quilt . Any optimal quilt is a Mrs. Perkins's Quilt. As an illustration, here are optimal quilts of size 14 to 58.
Figure 1. Mrs. Perkins's Quilts of size 14 to 58.

The Pythagorean Theorem or The Spider and The Fly? For almost every course one can find a small set of questions ... questions that can be stated with the minimum of technical language, that are sufficiently striking to capture interest; that do not have trivial answers, and that manage to embody in their answers the important ideas of the subject.
P R Halmos 1975 Henry Dudeney raised this question: A spider and a fly are in the same room. The fly is fast asleep and the spider is hungry. What is the shortest route the spider might take? Ah, I almost forgot! The spider can not swing itself like Tarzan, king of the jungle. It is limited to crawling on the walls, ceiling and floor. The room is 15 meters long, 6 m wide and 6 m high. The spider is 0.5 m from the ceiling and 3 m from each wall. The fly is 0.5 m from the floor and 3 m from each wall. I will give you a hint: The answer is not 21 m.

t's amusing to see how things that were interesting to puzzlers many decades ago look fresh and attractive today. Of course, they were presented in a somewhat different manner, but their core is still appealing to their solvers.
Everybody knows the Dots & Boxes game. It's a classic pencil-and-paper game that kids and adults have played for over 100 years. Rules are so simple that young children can understand them, but the game has so interesting and non-trivial strategy that to play well will challenge even an adult. At the same time it makes a wonderful puzzle producing almost endless number of challenges every time you play it. Below we'd like to propose you two classic challenges by Sam Loyd and Henry E. Dudeney, which were created more than 80 years ago. We give them saving authentic texts and illustrations to demonstrate the true "puzzling smell" of these little old puzzle gems.
To make these puzzles even more challenging we decided to propose them along with some modern challenges for the Galactic Takeover game as our Mini-Contest, which now is finished, though.

Henry Dudeney
Henry Ernest Dudeney 10 April 24 April ) was an English author and mathematician who specialised in logic puzzles and mathematical games . Dudeney was born in the town of Mayfield, East Sussex , England, and died in nearby Lewes . In 1884 he married Alice Whittier, a writer who published a number of short stories in Harper's Magazine under the name "Mrs. Henry Dudeney". Dudeney learned to play chess at an early age, and continued to play frequently throughout his life. This led to a particular interest in mathematics and the composition of puzzles . Although he spent his career in the Civil Service , Dudeney continued to devise various problems and puzzles. He exchanged puzzles with fellow recreational mathematician Sam Loyd for a while, but broke off the correspondence and accused Loyd of stealing Dudeney's puzzles and publishing them under his own name. Dudeney contributed for many years to the Strand Magazine . He also published several collections of puzzles, including

Classic Puzzles by Henry Ernest Dudeney
Henry Ernest Dudeney (1857-1930) was England's greatest composer of puzzles. He was a near-contemporary of Sam Loyd , America's greatest puzzle expert, and the two men frequently exchanged puzzles and ideas. Many of Loyd's and Dudeney's published puzzles show strong similarities, demonstrating how close their collaboration sometimes was.

Pentomino History
Pentomino puzzles have been around since at least the early 1900's, when they were mentioned in The Canterbury Puzzles by Henry Dudeney (Dover Publications, 1986; first published in London, 1907). This book is still in print and popular among puzzle enthusiasts today. Dudeney quotes from Hayward's Life of William the Conqueror , published in 1613, the following humorous and obscure bit of history:
"Toward the end of his reigne he appointed his two sonnes Robert and Henry, with joynt authoritie, governors of Normandie; the one to suppresse either the insolence or levitie of the other. These went together to visit the French king lying at Constance: where, entertaining the time with varietie of disports, Henry played with Louis, then Daulphine of France, at chesse, and did win of him very much. "Hereat Louis beganne to growe warme in words, and was therein little respected by Henry. The great impatience of the one and the small forbearance of the other did strike in the end such a heat between them that Louis threw the chessmen at Henry's face. "Henry again stroke Louis with the chessboard, drew blood with the blowe, and had presently slain him upon the place had he not been stayed by his brother Robert.

Dudeney (the name is pronounced to rhyme with "scrutiny") was born in Sussex, England in 1857. His father, John Dudeney, a shepherd, had taught himself mathematics, whilst tending his sheep on the downs above Lewes, 50 miles south of London. A self-taught mathematician also, Henry never went to college. His first book The Canterbury Puzzles was published in 1907. Others followed at intervals until his death in 1930. Geometric dissections on the web
A geometric dissection is a cutting of one or more figures into pieces that can be rearranged to form other figures. Dissections are often cast as puzzles, in which the object is to use as few pieces as possible. These geometrical puzzles fall under the category of mathematical recreations. Some dissections are relatively simple; others are deceptively simple, employing elegant approaches. A number of dissections can be found on the web:

First proposed by Dudeney (1907) and discussed in Gardner (1961, p. 34), Stewart (1987, p. 169), and Wells (1991, pp. 61-62). The solution can be hinged so that the four pieces collapse into either the triangle or the square . Two of the hinges bisect sides of the triangle, while the third hinge and the corner of the large piece on the base cut the base in the approximate ratio SEE ALSO: Dissection [Pages Linking Here] REFERENCES: Chuan, J. MATHWORLD - IN PRINT Order book from Amazon Calculus and Analysis Differential Geometry Geodesics ... Fernandez Spider and Fly Problem In a rectangular room (a cuboid ) with dimensions , a spider is located in the middle of one wall one foot away from the ceiling. A fly is in the middle of the opposite wall one foot away from the floor. If the fly remains stationary, what is the shortest total distance (i.e., the geodesic ) the spider must crawl along the walls, ceiling, and floor in order to capture the fly? The answer, , can be obtained by "flattening" the walls as illustrated above. Note that his distance is shorter than the the spider would have to travel if first crawling along the wall to the floor, then across the floor, then up one foot to get to the fly. The puzzle was originally posed in an English newspaper by Dudeney in 1903 (Gardner 1958). A twist to the problem can be obtained by a spider that suspends himself from strand of cobweb and thus takes a shortcut by not being forced to remain glued to a surface of the room. If the spider attaches a strand of cobweb to the wall at his starting position and lowers himself down to the floor (thus not crawling a single inch), he can then cross the length of the room by foot (
