Classic Puzzles by Henry Ernest Dudeney
Henry Ernest Dudeney (1857-1930) was England's greatest composer of puzzles. He was a near-contemporary of Sam Loyd , America's greatest puzzle expert, and the two men frequently exchanged puzzles and ideas. Many of Loyd's and Dudeney's published puzzles show strong similarities, demonstrating how close their collaboration sometimes was.

Henry Ernest Dudeney came from a family which had a mathematical tradition and also a tradition of school teaching. Henry's father was a schoolmaster and his father, Henry's paternal grandfather, although he began life as a shepherd, taught himself mathematics and astronomy and left his life on the hills to become a schoolmaster in Lewes. Henry learnt to play chess at a young age and soon became interested in chess problems. From the age of nine he was composing problems and puzzles which he published in a local paper. Although he only had a basic education, never attending college, he had a particular interest in mathematics and studied mathematics and its history in his spare time. As he pointed out:- The history of mathematical puzzles entails nothing short of the actual story of the beginnings and development of exact thinking in man.

    The Labourer’s Puzzle
During one of his rambles, Professor Rackbrane chanced to come across a man digging a deep hole.
“Good morning”, he said. “How deep is that hole?”
“Guess”, replied the labourer. “My height is exactly 5 feet 10 inches”.
“How much deeper are you going?” asked the professor.
“I am going twice as deep”, was the answer, “and then my head will be twice as far below ground as it is now above ground.”
Rackbrane now asks if you could tell how deep that hole would be when it was finished.
    The Abbey
In 1890 Henry E.Dudeney was responsible for a new innovation, that of magic word squares complete with clues which were provided in the form of a verse entitled The Abbey. The object was to replace the seven numerals in the verse with seven words, which when listed in their given order form a magic word square, where the seven words read the same both across and down.
‘Twas spring. The abbey woods were decked with second.
The abbot with his fifth , no trouble reckoned; But shared his meats and seventh which every man Who loves to feast has first since time began.

    The Village Simpleton
A facetious individual, who was taking a long walk in the country, came upon a yokel sitting by a stile. As the gentleman was not quite sure of his road, he thought he would make enquiries of the local inhabitant, but at the first glance he jumped too hastily to the conclusion that he had dropped on the village idiot. He, therefore, decided to test the fellow’s intelligence first by putting to him the simplest question he could think of, which was: “What day of the week is this, my good man?” The following is the smart answer that he received:
“When the day after tomorrow is yesterday, today will be as far from Sunday as today was from Sunday when the day before yesterday was tomorrow.”
Can you say what day of the week it was? It is pretty evident that the countryman was not such a fool as he looked. The gentleman went on the road a puzzled but a wiser man.

Allerton, Bert (1958) Close Up Magician
    Andrews, W. S.
This is probably the definitive work on Magic Squares. It shows how to construct them, the detailed mathematics behind them, and all of the many variations that exist. It is also a highly "technical" book, and of more interest to the serious mathematician than the average magician.
Annemann, Theo. (1931) The Book Without A Name
This book contains some good presentation tips.

There are many "pages" on the Internet about Magic Squares.
Anon. The Complete Home Entertainer. London: Odhams Press Limited
This is quite an old book that I found on my local market. It contains a number of chapters on magic, and one on word games, one of which is an early Latin Word Square.

Samuel Loyd Always known as Sam, Samuel Loyd was the creator of famous mathematical puzzles and recreations. When he was 14 years old, he began to attend a chess club with his brothers Thomas and Isaac. While still at school, Loyd won prizes for his chess problems. He began submitting problems to Chess Monthly and he became the problem editor of the magazine in 1857. After leaving school Loyd began to study engineering, intending to become a steam and mechanical engineer, but he found he could make his living from his puzzles and chess problems. By 1870 Loyd had become more interested in composing mathematical puzzles than chess problems. Info from http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Mathematicians/Loyd.html
