Jesse Douglas
Jesse Douglas July 3 October 7 ) was an American mathematician. He was born in New York and attended Columbia College from . Douglas was one of two winners of the first Fields Medals , awarded in . He was honored for solving, in , the problem of Plateau , which asks whether a minimal surface exists for a given boundary. The problem, open since when Lagrange raised it, is considered part of the calculus of variations and is also know as the soap bubble problem . The American Mathematical Society awarded him the Bcher Prize in . Douglas later became a full professor at the City College of New York (CCNY), where he taught until his death. At the time CCNY only offered undergraduate degrees and Professor Douglas taught the advanced calculus course. Sophomores (and freshmen with advanced placement) were privileged to get their introduction to real analysis from a Fields medalist.

Jesse Douglas developed a love of geometry studying Plateau Problems . He studied differential geometry He gave a complete solution to the Plateau problem which was first posed by Lagrange in 1760. It was studied by Riemann Weierstrass and Schwarz . The problem is proving the existence of a surface of minimal area bounded by a contour. Before Douglas's solution only special cases had been solved. Then he went on to study generalisations of the problem. In 1943 Douglas was awarded the Prize by the American Mathematical Society for his memoirs on the Plateau Problem. In particular the award was for three papers all published in 1939: Green's function and the problem of Plateau published in the American Journal of Mathematics, The most general form of the problem of Plateau published in the American Journal of Mathematics and Solution of the inverse problem of the calculus of variations published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Fields Medal
Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

How do you make decisions in such an ambiguous world?”
