Arlie Petters Is First Recipient of Blackwell-Tapia Prize
Robert E. Megginson "When you are a little boy in Belize, in a town of about 3000 people and barely any electricity, you just have Mother Nature with you at night, and as a child you have all these philosophical questions about how the stars got there, how they stay there. I just couldn't stay away from that." (From Arlie O. Petters's talk, "Gravitational Lensing: Universal Properties and Applications," given at the 2002 Blackwell-Tapia Conference at MSRI, November 2, 2002.) In the years since his childhood in Central America, Arlie Petters has most certainly not been able to stay away from learning more about the universe and how it works. During the past decade, he has added greatly to the understanding of gravitational lensing through his pioneering contributions to the mathematical underpinnings of the theory. For this work, as well as for his efforts to help others from underrepresented minority groups find their way through the educational pipeline leading to advanced degrees in the mathematical sciences, Petters has been named the first recipient of the David H. Blackwell-Richard A. Tapia Prize. Building on the success of the Blackwell-Tapia Conference held at Cornell University in May 2000, Cornell and the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley established the Blackwell-Tapia Prize. The prize is to be given to mathematical scientists who have contributed significantly to their fields of expertise, and who have served as role models for mathematical scientists and students from underrepresented minority groups or have addressed in other significant ways the problem of the underrepresentation of minorities in mathematics. The prize will be presented every even-numbered year at a conference in honor of the recipient and the prize's two namesakes, featuring talks in the awardee's area of mathematical expertise.

    In Memoriam
James J. Kaput , professor of mathematics at the University of Massachsetts at Dartmouth, died at age 63 after a jogging accident on July 31, 2005. Kaput was well known for his work on mathematics education. According to the obitiuary in the Boston Globe , Kaput "was convinced that things like arcade games and hand-held devices were the keys to breaking down mathematical concepts so anyone could understand them." He taught at UMass Dartmouth for 25 years, received many NSF grants, and helped found SimCalc Technologies. Kaput was a member of the MAA for 28 years. George and Esther Szekeres George B. Dantzig , "the father of linear programing," died on May 13. An extended obituary will appear in the August-September issue of FOCUS. Edward N. Mosley , age 66, passed away on June 12 after an extended battle with cancer. He taught at Lyon College for 35 years and was a member of MAA for 43 years. Mosley also served as Governor of the Oklahoma-Arkansas Section. He is survived by his wife, Mary Eleanor, a son, John Mosley, and his brother Dr. James Mosley. Louis Leithold , author of a well-known calculus textbook, died at home in April from natural causes. He was 80 years old. Leithold taught at Cal State L.A., Phoenix College in Arizona, the Open University of Great Britain, the University of Southern California and, most recently, Pepperdine University. In his 70s, he turned to teaching AP calculus in high schools. He is remembered and respected by AP calculus teachers as a leader and an inspiration. For more on Louis Leithold's life and work see the LA Times obituary at

    74. Paul Lévy
joseph doob writes of Lévy ``Paul Lévy is not a formalist. It is typical ofhis approach to mathematics that he defines the random variables of a
    http://www.cmap.polytechnique.fr/~rama/levy.html
collection of small computational problems. Now it is a fully-fledged branch of mathematics using techniques from all branches of modern analysis and making its own contribution of ideas, problems, results and useful machinery to be applied elsewhere. If there is one person who has influenced the
establishment and growth of probability theory more than any other, that person must be Paul Lévy."
This was the beginning of his lifelong interest in probability theory, which lead to the discovery of a wealth of results, many of which have become today standard material for undergraduate and
graduate courses in probability theory. He made major contributions to the study of Gaussian variables and processes, the law of large numbers, the central limit theorem, stable laws,
infinitely divisible laws and pioneered the study of processes with independent and stationary increments, now known as Lévy processes. The book he wrote on this topic, Théorie de l'addition des variables aléatoires, has served as an inspiration to many researchers in probability and physics, where stable processes with independent increments have become known as Lévy flights. He pioneered the study of the properties of Brownian paths, in which he introduced
the notion of local time. These studies culminated in his classic book
